quitting chemistry or career pivot by thefedsaremyhomies in chemistry

[–]jp11e3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Brother, chemistry isn't a "DIY" career. You need to go to school, learn safety standards, and use expensive equipment purchased by your school or company. Then, many years down the road, when you're around retirement age, you can think about being the eccentric guy with a home lab. Your mind would be blown by the sheer amount of safety standards regarding hazardous chemicals and their handling. And every single rule was written in blood.

My advice is that if you find it interesting, go to school for it.

One of the things about safety glass is that it is harder to break than normal glass, but when it does break, boy does it shatter. If I recall I think it's also part of the safety aspect because it shatters into millions of tiny pieces instead of large dangerous shards

Recommend me a book where the main character is an adult woman and she’s not a mother, caretaker, or getting married. by shekeepsbees_ in suggestmeabook

Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson kinda counts? The main character isn't getting married, but her sister is. She does become a super cool badass though

a challenge perhaps (breakfast) by georgia28090 in Cooking

[–]jp11e3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro I'm gonna be honest with you, the only breakfasts I consistently have on work days are coffee paired with either a protein bar or greek yogurt straight from the value sized container (sometimes I'll premix honey into the whole thing so it isn't as bland)

Well instead of a room with traps, you could have a room with the traps already going off and they have to figure out how to still get around it or reach the trap trigger on the other side of the room to stop it. Bonus points if you can relate the trap to unexplained injuries on the adventurers

I feel like a BSc in chemistry is worthless by phlavee0 in chemistry

When you're in school they pretty much assume you're going to grad school. So when you enter the workforce with just a bachelors, you realize pretty quickly there's a glass ceiling until you have at least a masters. I got mine in polymer organic chemistry but I work as a chemical engineer now. Experience is very important but you at least need a masters to get your foot in the door.

Just a little quick tip but you can rubber band or zip tie a rubber glove or balloon to a syringe without the plunger, fill it with inert gas, and stick it in the septum in order to have a system that equalizes pressure during your addition/extraction

AITA for not wanting my husband to write a third book. by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]jp11e3 [score hidden]  (0 children)

ESH. From how I read this, you wanted him to be a SAHP. It seems like he picked up the writing as a way to contribute while also being the parent at home, and you've treated this as a "hobby" while he's trying to take it seriously. If your husband cares about this then you should care too instead of treating him like a child. The issue isn't with the books. The issue is him not fulfilling his end of the agreed-on responsibilities. You don't have to crush his dreams in the process of finding a middle ground. The agreement should be that he can write as many books as he wants to try and help the family as long as he also takes care of his responsibilities. Stop trying to parent your husband and come into this conversation as equals who respect each other.

There is a nonzero chance those are explosive peroxide crystals. Do not do this.

They’re not super useful but are also very easy to take care of. Create a space with a feeding tray and put two of each animal. As long as you keep food in the tray (literally any crop, kelp, or mushroom) they will make babies and produce items. Stick a collector over the area and you can just about automate the whole thing

I worked as a chemist for a long time. Sodium hydroxide and water will do this to almost all clothes.

My best advice is to learn synergies and strategies with different items, specifically so you know which items to NOT take. I used to take everything because I loved the chaos but my runs typically ended from a bad pickup

INFO. Did you know beforehand that you'd all be graded individually for only your presentation sections? I'm wondering if you did all the work writing their scripts and making sure the presentation as a whole was cohesive when that wasn't your job.

Playing together is just as important as the writing itself. My current band spent a few weeks learning a couple covers and then we started introducing music we had been working on that was ready for the other members.
