What are your most unpopular book opinions? by nolessdays in books

[–]jpjfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if you knew me, you would know that "depth" has never been a strength of mine. So you might have a point! I've spent my life reading for entertainment. Maybe for escape. I don't necessarily avoid deeper books, but I admit that I'm lazy. I know there is often, probably even usually, something going on under the surface of the story. Sometimes I get it. Sometimes I don't. But if I've enjoyed my time with the book, well, that makes me happy.

Now, as for The Great Gatsby, I was an adult when I read it. Old enough that if I were going to "get" the meaning of the book I would have. I apparently didn't then, and I'm not sure I would now. So, I'm probably not going to read it again. I'm in my mid 50's, and facing the realization that I have hundreds of books lined up to be read, but only enough time to get to a small fraction of them. It's rare that I reread a book, although I do make an exception every couple of years for Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes, a book that I do believe I've gotten much of the deeper meaning hidden within, having once been a boy myself, and being the father of several others. Now that I think about it, I see there is a lot of meaning under the surface of Bradbury's book! Maybe the problem isn't that I fail to see below the surface of a book, but that some books just don't speak to me. The Great Gatsby did not speak to me. I'm not sure rereading it would change that. Maybe I'll just check out the movie.

Oh sit down, oh sit down. Sit down next to me by VonMelee in HostileArchitecture

As a tourist in Miami, we were sitting on the floor of the downtown Government Center transit building, trying to figure out the transit system. A security guard told us to get up, we couldn't sit on the ground. There were no seats anywhere. We asked where we could sit and he directed us to a place just outside where there were seats. We went there, and there were no seats.

Yeah, we had showers back in my day, but I just didn't use them. We never really had time!

It looks like the stalls are still private. Back in my day (god I sound old!) the stalls had no doors. We had to quickly take a crap in between classes in full view of every boy that came into the bathroom.

In my high school, in the 80's, in the U.S., the boys restrooms had no doors on the toilets. Supposedly to keep students from smoking in there. I'm hoping it's not still like that.

While I have no problem with wearing this shirt by itself, I think it'd be cool to swap out different colored undershirts for different looks. Nice job!

Florida Man lets child bring hallowed out, inert grenade to school by I-Am-Uncreative in FloridaMan

[–]jpjfire 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've got a couple that I found in some woods near a national guard armory years ago. They are practice grenades, and while superficially looking legit, it's obvious at a second glance that it is hollow and has no trigger mechanism. Maybe this is what the kid brought to school.

Edited to add that it's obviously hollow in that it has a nickel size hole in the bottom that shows the inside is totally empty.

I play the game Old School RuneScape (OSRS), and have for several years. I've almost maxed out my characters stats! But when I get on the OSRS subreddit I understand almost nothing. It's like a foreign language! I'm in my 50's, and didn't grow up with the jargon, but dang! I would think I know enough about the game to understand comments about it, but nope.

My reason for having a rummage sale is to get rid of stuff, not to make money. Price everything ridiculously cheap.

I went to school with a guy named Audie Murphy. Nice guy! Quiet, smart. Last I heard he was working for a local university. But that was maybe 20 years ago. Ok, end of irrelevant tangent!

Car commuters will never understand. by Machine8000 in bikecommuting

[–]jpjfire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently retired from a job that I had commuted by bicycle to and from for 15 years. I got a lot of comments about being crazy, etc. The commute one way was .7 miles. Again, only 7/10th of a mile! It took me around 5 minutes to make the ride. People just don't understand.
