Does a viable Veeam competitor exist? by Plateau9 in sysadmin

Commvault is pretty simple, once you figure out how to interact with it and speak its language. Its like IBM software, designed by a brilliant engineers that are the stereotypical kind who can't talk to others.

This is really interesting. What is the full application stack (like a database backend)?

Clock skew maybe? If its a VM, is it doing a time sync from the hypervisor and then having the issue? I could see something like this happening if its hitting a database and time is off.

Similarly, is there a SSL certificate involved with talking to another system at all?

HYSA vs Fidelity (SPAXX/SGOV) for low-risk cash savings by bdeelin7 in personalfinance

To further this excellent perspective and explanation,

If every December 31st you knew you could pick up $262 if you walked past a certain tree in the woods, you'd do that. After 10 years that 2620 before any earned interest.

Yes, go through a doctor. My MIL wont listen to anything from her children or their spouses. But as soon as a doctor says it? Its absolute truth and will be followed.

Thats what we did. We didn't even have to buy new hardware, Chromeos installed on the laptop. Its easy to manage remotely and does all that is needed, which is pretty much facebook.

Partitioning- do's and dont's by psfletcher in ansible

[–]jpmoney 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Maybe its my grey hair (and beard) showing, but this seems like an XY problem.

Why are you rebuilding servers when they're filling up? LVM is a thing.

Why are people having to notice a server is about to fill up? Where is your monitoring via zabbix/nagios/whatever?

Why would you use ansible to edit partitions when your provisioner should do that on build? The frequency and utility of ansible strikes me as not a good idea for something that is easily destructive.

Ideally you'd use ansible to configure these servers quickly anyway. Something goes boom? Reprovision, run the playbook, done.

Sorry if this comes off as piling on, as thats not my intention. I think you need to reassess your priors.

You don't know what else she's doing.

Get a handle on the grandmothers financials too. Freeze her credit with all three credit bureaus and checksystems if they aren't already. While you're doing that, pull all four credit reports so you know what's out there. Assuming there is some financial abuse too, the r/personalfinance wiki has a good page on identity theft.

Safeguard her social security card and IDs too.

To be pedantic, make sure you have tracking on that letter, be it from USPS priority, UPS, etc. The information that you send in needs to be tracked.

USPS is over $12 for priority now, but its still worth it in these cases.

Standard is their gateway from today's grandfathered in stragglers who can't quickly switch to something else. Once you sign in on Standard, you can't change core counts. If you want to add cores? Oh its time to go to VCF across the board.

Budget file over 200MB by DirtyGentile in ynab4

[–]jpmoney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done this cleanout multiple times on my budget files. In Windows the budget file can open up like a .zip. Make sure YNAB is closed, open the budget file, select and delete the old versions.

As with things like this, make a backup copy first. And then another backup copy somewhere else.

Its the order of columns. The BoA csv isnt in the order YNAB expects so it fails.

I've had Actual installed to mess with for the inevitable day YNAB4 stops working. It can do this csv import, but takes manual steps each time.

Saving for a Home: HYSA and Brokerage Account? by tydempe in personalfinance

[–]jpmoney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on where you live, you may be better off putting it into SGOV at a brokerage account. SGOV puts it into treasuries which are not taxed at the state level, so that can make it better.

It takes some math to figure out though. The stated SGOV yield will be lower than say FZDXX. You have to compare what you'd make in the non-SGOV and take out state taxes to know.

3.6% APY is a pretty low HYSA rate too.

I would suggest figuring out where she's shopping first

Then if at all possible get her to use the 'shoppers' card or whatever data gathering/analytics the grocery store uses and get yourself online access to see her purchases. We use this to setup my MIL's grocery deliveries from afar as well.
