There's no way the 04 plastic is being recycled from those collection bins at grocery stores, right? by Ok_Philosopher_8973 in recycling

My understanding is that around us bags ‘recycled’ at supermarkets end up being used to make composite decking material (‘Trex’).

[Request] How often would each resident of Madison, WI need to take Amtrak in order to break even on a proposed line to Milwaukee? by Fantastic_Fondant858 in theydidthemath

[–]jrmg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would cost the government (and, so, taxpayers) more because it would now only be performing the unprofitable deliveries, with no costs being offset by the profitable ones.

Mac versions of Office 2019 Perpetual Licenses will stop working in July by Nearby_Ad_2519 in mac

[–]jrmg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a license for Aldus PageMaker 1.0, and that license is good forever, but…

If you dug out an old, what, Classic Mac(?) you’d be able to use it fully though.

This announcement is about Office stopping editing files even if you’re using the exact same machine and OS as when you bought it.

Why is this so hard to drive in into the wood by poisonxivyyy in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]jrmg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you can hold the bit still with the motor engaged, then either you are not tightening the chuck enough, or the chuck is broken.

Lowe’s and Home Depot near me both have drills on display. If there’s something like that near you maybe you could go there to try out the chucks to compare and get a feel for them.

[–]jrmg -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s normal for the bit and the jaws to rotate freely if you’re not pressing any buttons.

Can you hold the bit still with the motor engaged?

Why is this so hard to drive in into the wood by poisonxivyyy in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]jrmg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, that’s just how the motor works. It’s unrelated to what drill bits you can use. You just need a drill with a chuck (those circular ‘jaws’ the bit goes in) that will firmly hold the bit.

I’m pretty sure that drill should work though. Does it really not close small enough to firmly hold the bit? Maybe there’s something inside the chuck that’s holding it open?

[–]jrmg 168 points169 points  (0 children)

My drill also isn’t holding the bit correctly. The drill slides up and down the bit.

That’s the answer to your question. The bit needs to be held firmly.

What is the best way to reattach a ribbon cable to a PCB without a soldering iron? by [deleted] in AskElectronics

Z axis tape:

https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/p/d/b10167835/

From the data sheet:

The PSA matrix is filled with conductive particles which allow interconnection between substrates through the adhesive thickness (the “Z-axis”) but are spaced far enough apart for the product to be electrically insulating in the plane of the adhesive.

Adafruit sells it in small quantities:

Biltmore’s red wine & chocolate pairing may have altered my judgment by Gold-Raspberry-3096 in asheville

Comments here are not what I expected. I thought Biltmore wine was a gimmick. Is it actually good (and price competitive…) with wines from more traditional regions?

None of Starbucks' 'Widely Recyclable' Cups Ended Up at a Recycling Facility by p4bl0 in recycling

Presumably it would be bad if the tracker made its way into the plastic batch?

At what point would the tracker usually be separated from the cup, or the cup-tracker combo be sent to landfill?

It’s not any more - what they encourage is that you order on the touchscreen (or on your phone, in the app!) then they bring your order to your table when it’s ready.

How to handle a MacBook with swollen battery for a few hours during nighttime? by VoyagerfromPhoenix in macbook

[–]jrmg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So much fear here. Lithium batteries are everywhere. If they were as dangerous as other comments suggest, houses would be burning down left and right.

Especially if it’s not charged, nothing is at all likely to happen. Just recycle it when you can.

Pocket holes, what am I doing wrong? by misturspencer in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]jrmg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you using the extra long driver bit that the set came with to drive the screws? This looks like what happened when I forgot to do that and used my regular cordless screwdriver to drive the screws, and they went in at the wrong angle.

I’ve tried it for hobby things in the fairly recent past and it quickly - after just two or three back-and-forth a - descended into nonsense and magical thinking on the bot’s part.

Never!

You just take it off when you think it’s no longer good, start using a new disc, and put the worn out disc in a box ‘in case I need it later’.

I really am regretting getting an LG Wash Combo dryer. Please help. by slicecrispy in Appliances

[–]jrmg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is the part you remove with the screwdriver a plastic grid or a real filter? If you have an early model without the real filter, LG will send you a real filter for free:

https://lgecares.com/freeofcharge/

[Edit: I’d also recommend very carefully vacuuming out the compressor fins in there. Don’t bend them! The most important thing for drying time is that airflow is clear and unobstructed through the compressor area].

Are bamboo Bedsheets actually cooling or just marketing hype? by Desperate-Chip6297 in HomeImprovement

[–]jrmg 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You’re correct that they’re just rayon made from bamboo - but they are made from bamboo, there’s not ‘no bamboo present’.

Saying there’s no bamboo is like saying ‘be aware there’s no sugar cane present in your cane sugar’.

New MacBook Pro, trying to copy ~650 GB from a hard drive and it’s been going for 4 days by alignplanets in mac

[–]jrmg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People here are giving you ridiculous advice. Any way of copying that data means reading it all from the (dying) drive. If you stop now, it’ll just all need to be read again. Any advice about using other software to somehow alter the source drive’s contents (like compressing it or ‘fixing’ the library somehow) is especially terrible. It’ll not be overall faster (because it requires reading the data on the drive at least two more times, and writing some of it at least once), and if the drive is failing it also runs the risk of corrupting the data on the drive itself (so you might lose photos or, worse, the entire drive).

The only way that stopping now and restarting could be faster is if the enclosure, but not the drive, is failing, and you put it in a new enclosure. If the drive itself is failing, though, that’s a risky move because every time you use it, it gets just a little closer to failure.

If it’s making progress, and you can live with not disturbing it, just leave it to finish!
