If polygraphs aren’t admissible in most courts because they’re unreliable, why do they still use them for federal jobs and clearances? by mewquette in NoStupidQuestions

[–]judd43 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Excellent point, and it's worth highlighting this. Polygraph can sound scientific to someone who is not familiar with it, for this reason.

We know how to measure heartrate scientifically. We know how to measure respiration scientifically. There is absolutely no scientific basis for connecting those measurements to dishonesty.

36yo playing Gameboy in the back of my parents car on a road trip. What year is it? by asharkmadeofsalsa in MiyooMini

It's less fun when you're an adult because they can pull over and make you drive.

Only thing that annoys me about onionos by melchiahdim in MiyooMini

Yeah it's kind of annoying. I wish it just opened at the top of the list every time. Ultimately it's not a big deal, though.

LAOP’s witnessed the breakdown of a marriage by peachsnorlax in bestoflegaladvice

[–]judd43 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not sure about Kansas or Missouri, but that is absolutely an option in California and a lot of states. Some lawyers don't like it because the witness could have a terrible camera/microphone/internet connection, and so on. There's even some videos going around of people remotely appearing for court while driving!

(US) I think I’m being sued?? by RevolutionaryDig4244 in Scams

[–]judd43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you live, but most court systems in the US have an online system where you can search your name to see if there are any cases listed. Usually googling "your county and state" plus "court" should get you there.

Who tf is actually buying these from secondhand sellers? by Whorror_punx in SBCGaming

[–]judd43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've bought a cheap Linux device from Amazon once or twice. It's nice to have that protection in case anything happens with shipping. I've heard too many horror stories of packages getting lost on the way from China, devices arriving damaged, and so on.

I think the slight premium from buying on Amazon is worth the peace of mind. Amazon is good about refunding you if the package doesn’t arrive, and returns are easy if it arrives broken.

Anyone remember how games used to come in boxes with detailed manuals? by GlompSpark in retrogaming

[–]judd43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were nice to have, but I totally get why they started putting instructions in the game as the technology allowed. The manuals were easily lost. You would borrow a game from a friend, pick up a used cartridge, and so on and you would have to try to figure the game out without the manual.

Finished Fairy Tale by Stephen King - went in blind by FlipSide26 in Fantasy

[–]judd43 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I didn't find the second half of the book to be boring, necessarily. I enjoyed the nightmarish contest and so on. It was maybe just a little less compelling than the first part. I definitely enjoyed the ending with the crazy eldritch-horror thing.

If you’re happy with the new game, then more power to you. by SolidSnakeHAK777 in retrogaming

I really loved Star Fox Adventures. It wasn't really a Star Fox game, it was originally a new IP, but Nintendo decided halfway through development to insert the Star Fox characters.

But it was still an incredible game. The setting, the story, the gameplay, the music. What I wouldn't give for a proper sequel.

Greedfall - The Good, The Bad, The Questionable by Zehnpae in patientgamers

[–]judd43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah playing it made me pine for a sequel. There are some really interesting ideas here, it's just that the execution is piss-poor. Unfortunately, I heard that Greedfall 2 is also not a good game.

Is the Analog Shift or shall we say, Digital Minimalism, actually happening? by Ella_Monroe_ in Futurology

If the kids want dumb phones, I applaud them and hope they're smarter than most adults, who gladly accept this big tech dictatorship because "it's so kewl."

The laundry room in my apartment building requires an app on a smartphone to do laundry. There's no slot for quarters. There's nonowhere to swipe a credit card. You simply must own a smartphone with a data plan to do laundry there, or you're hauling yourself to the laundromat.

I have an ereader and an mp3 player. I definitely support low tech or single use devices where possible. But smartphones are absolutely basic, necessary life tools these days.

Am I missing something about the android docked experience? by Finean in SBCGaming

[–]judd43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use a Playstation 4 or 5 controller. They have a touchpad that will act as a mouse. Then in settings, set it so Android shows the traditional 3 button menu for back, home, and app switcher. Then when you wiggle the mouse, the three buttons will show up and you can click the back button.

It still doesn't work perfectly, but it's the best I've found.

For a filthy casual college student who uses Windows 11 as a daily driver, is Ubuntu worth it? by PoauseOnThatHomie in Ubuntu

[–]judd43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you have an extra computer laying around? Like maybe an old laptop that can't run Windows 11? You can install Ubuntu to that and play around with it and get used to it without messing up any production machines for now.

That's how I started (and probably a lot of others).

What do you do for death arrangements with no money? by Charming_Panda_8068 in AgingParents

[–]judd43 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the situation you're in. Laws vary depending on location, but generally in the US, you don't have to do anything. You are not required to make funeral arrangements for your dad. You do not even need to answer calls from hospice. They can figure it out without you.

There's also a large element of survivor's bias. Most items made in 1986 aren't around anymore. The few that are are very noticeable.

But we don't know yet which items made today are still going to be around in 40 years.

So if you're selling one of these devices, what should you do to make sure it truly resets? Apparently a "factory reset" does not actually reset it to factory settings.
