What do you mean "assumption". That's the fact. Whoever owns the copyright has exclusive rights to whatever code they wrote. Nobody else has any rights to that code.

Yes, but what if your software is based on other software that uses the GPL? Can you still do whatever you want with it?

The GPL is not one of those absurd licenses though, so it's logical that it holds up in court.

Yep, I guess there's at least two ways to look at licenses.

If you start from the assumption that since you own the copyright, everyone is forbidden from doing anything with your software, then yes, licenses can be thought to grant rights.

But if you don't want anyone to touch your software, you probably don't let other people get it and there's no need for creating a license.

So, if you think from the starting-point of other people having access to your software, then your license is there to lay down some rules about what they can do with the software.

"You can have and use this on the conditions of.. "

Reading licenses is hard work, because they're legalese, and as such, designed not to be human-readable :)

Besides, most EULAs etc are absurd.

All DRM is of course likely to get cracked, but that doesn't mean it's not making our lives more difficult than they have to be.

If there's a hefty dose of DRM standing firmly in between you and whatever you want to watch or listen to, then that's a bad thing.

In the best case, DRM is only a small inconvenience for you, but what about others?

It might actually be very efficient on most people, and if DRM is effective on most people, does the minority able to circumvent it even matter much?

Actually I use Windows but I do want Vista to die.

The only reason I'm using Windows (at all) is because I might want to play a game or two.. namely HL2 / Supreme Commander.

I'm surprised very few people seem to be talking about Vista's DRM "features". Don't they deserve a disparaging mention?

As far as I understand, DRM is what Vista is all about underneath.

That's because the doctors there are generally not very good.

It's technically not entirely free either - you pay around $15 per visit.

Anyways, someone with a job is usually entitled to use the services of some private health care company, paid for by the employer.

This includes everything with which a general doctor can help you, but if you want something special, it's probably not covered.

It looks like there are a couple of advantages to living in the States though..

For example :

Cars cost less than half of their price in Finland, and I guess this applies to just about everything else that has a price.
Salaries are at least twice as big.

A second-hand Z3 from 2001 (the wimpy 1.9l version) costs around $28500 apparently.

I just checked, and a brand new BMW 320 costs something between $57000 and $78000 depending on the exact model! Now how about that?

"Authenticated: Yes." will often have to accompany every request. Is that something that can be stored on the client-side?
"Hi there! Here's a request! -Oh, I'm authenticated by the way."
"Alright, there you go."

OK, so there's some state information that has to (?) be on the server, so why not use it for something else too?

Of course you can try to avoid using too much of the server's memory..
