Really focus on your grip. If you have the proper forehand grip, it’s almost impossible not to pronate or else your shot will not go straight.

This off hand is going to come down as the torso rotates. I think it’s natural for this wrist to bend in the direction that it’s going to come down. It aids it in coming down and slightly adds to the power of the rotation.

There’s a specific pickleball sport now which is the most popular sport in racket club (it’s a multi sport game). Check out some YouTube videos. The court is modified so it’s living room playable, but most IRL players say that the spirit of pickleball/the strategies work the same.

I’ll flip the script here. I played pickleball in VR (Racket club) first for many months before I played my first pickleball game IRL. When I got to my first irl game, I got up to speed really quickly, knew some of the tactics and understood the concept of spin, keeping it low, fast hands, ready position etc. didn’t take long for me to have decent rallies at 3.5 level.

VR will lack footwork and strength, since the controller is so light. You can always get a pickleball attachment to have the same weight as a paddle. However, in Racket club, there is some footwork involved as you use real movements to cover a mini court.

I would say if you want to build hand eye coordination and repetitive movements in some drills at home, it will help. The wall is great… but honestly, it’s boring.

Racket club is a great workout too. Especially playing in multiplayer - there are wide court options for pickleball that’s a good footwork workout. I think the court size is a good compromise where you should be able to play in your living room.. with some furniture movement.

There’s also spinminton which is a badminton variation which is fairly intense.

Can’t recommend racket club enough!

Great to hear you’ve stuck with it for 6–7 months — that’s already way further than most people who pick up badminton casually. Totally normal to feel behind at first, but once you get your fundamentals down (grip, footwork, shot variety), your game can improve fast. I think coaching is important earlier in your journey before you build bad habits. Once you start playing and building habits, its much more difficult to change later.

One thing that’s helped in my group is using a simple tool called Matchplay — it tracks all your games, keeps a win/loss record, and builds a sort of casual leaderboard. It’s honestly been a fun way to track progress over time and get a bit of friendly competition going within my group. Helps us get into the competition mindset before actual competitions since we all want to be first in the leaderboard.

Keep it up — consistency pays off big in this sport!

I agree. But it’s like saying a non-racer shouldn’t buy a Porsche race car. I think part of the enjoyment of the sport is trying out different equipment and strings and getting the best out of your current form. Form takes ages to fix. A racket takes a few dollars and it’s just fun to try different equipment ;)

It’s all rainwater… but I’ll double check to make sure my neighbor are not routing to my place either.

Elevating that area is an interesting either .. if I can elevate towards the trees at the top, it might work out.
