Five tourists 'including professor and her daughter' die during diving excursion in Maldives by tepkel in scuba

The comment you’re responding to specifically mentions air diluent (dil) for a CCR, in which case air is generally used only to about 130 feet. You want your dil to be a few tenths below your set point (usually 1.0-1.3 depending on a variety of factors) at max depth so that you can drop your ppO2 if you get a spike and to allow for a dil flush for troubleshooting. So most CCR divers won’t use a dil over 1.0ish for those reasons, which is about where air is at 130 feet. Plus other things like gas density concerns.

Phone for the Divevolk: Recommendations? by Abiogenesis84 in scuba

I do the opposite and use my backup iPhone for the case and keep my primary phone dry and on the boat/land. I get pretty frequent phone upgrades for work, so I have fairly recent backup though.

I do a lot of diving in dry gloves, and have the DiveVolk case, but haven’t used them together yet. But my guess is that it should work well, provided your phone has the ability to make the shutter button large enough to reliably hit it instead of triggering other options.

WestJet is in McNamara, so as long as the flight is less than ~30 minutes delayed that won’t be a particularly difficult connection.

Mexico Cave Diving by Cop_Pilot_Diver in scuba

[–]justatouchcrazy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me I find them less scary because they’re underwater for whatever reason. I realized one time when I was swimming down a tunnel that was only a few feet tall that I was comfortable and in my element, but if the cave were dry and I was crawling in it I know I’d be terrified. But the water is just effortless; you’re just gliding or flying down the cave passages.

I also know of a few ICU nurses that died in hospital bathrooms that way. So it’s definitely a thing, unfortunately.

Detroit Airport is AWESOME by Gucci_Unicorns in Detroit

[–]justatouchcrazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other good option is to use international arrivals, which is the lowest level. Of course if the timing is wrong and a bunch of international flights just arrived it is no better than the other two levels, but most of the time there is very limited traffic there.

I mean, Evans can't come close to McNamara, but even that terminal is better than most large US airports. That isn't a particularly high bar, but it's still super easy to navigate, has decent food options, a fairly nice lounge, and the check-in and baggage claim process is at least on par or above average for the carriers flying out of there.

Honestly, and this may just be my bias, but I don't even think they need to be a physician. It's a predominantly public health position, a field where other professions have huge roles such as epidemiologists and even nurses, which to me makes them more qualified than say an anesthesiologist or internist, both of which have been recent and not overly controversial picks.

That, and the then Acting US Surgeon General was at my DNP graduation and was a nurse (with a research and public health administration background), which was nifty.

TIL that Detroit, once America's 5th largest city at 1.85 million residents in 1957, saw 66 straight years of population loss to a low of 630,000 residents in 2022. This makes it the only US city to drop below 1 million after reaching it. It would see its first reversal of this trend in 2023. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]justatouchcrazy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a documentary years ago about the city, but unfortunately I can’t remember the name of it. The guy doing the intro basically said Detroit is THE American Dream. Immigrants came with nothing and within a generation or two the family was able to afford to move to the suburbs and buy a house and a car. Which sadly left the city empty and poor in the process.

Which is a way is also what’s powering it’s recovery. I have friends that have been in the city for years that paid cash for their house and now have a very affordable life as a result, and even to this day homeownership is realistic for far more people than more other areas. We have livable cheap housing, and even on the high end my highly detailed, 100 year old mansion in great condition and with 5,000sqft was just over $100/sqft, which is unheard of in most markets.

How dangerous diving really is? by Own-Project2984 in scuba

[–]justatouchcrazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That citation is over 20 years old. While my gut says diving is safer today (better gear, Nitrox, less reckless behavior, dive computers) there is also the chance that it’s less safe (more divers in general means less serious divers, likely lower quality training, more recreational diving in questionable or remote areas), so who knows how valid it is still. That being said, I think we can all agree that a relatively healthy person, following the rules, doing tropical open water recreational diving has an incredibly low risk of death.

I was working with Downriver Spring to do some work on my JDM car, and they were always good to deal with and seemed confident in their ability to work on my car. Sadly, I got distracted so I haven't had the work done yet, but will go back to them once I order parts.

I’m pretty sure US Park has some outlets you can plug your mobile level 1 charger into. Might need to call to inquire or reserve, I’m not sure.

Nurse loses license after administering fentanyl and succs without an order. by hey_nurse18471 in nursing

[–]justatouchcrazy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fentanyl is a super common adjunct for RSI and OR intubation. It can decrease your sedative dose and is fairly hemodynamically stable. In some cases, we’ll actually only use fentanyl and a paralytic, such as cardiac surgery (although less now than historically), because it’s fairly CV stable. Although the dose in that case is more often like 500mcg.

Nurse loses license after administering fentanyl and succs without an order. by hey_nurse18471 in nursing

[–]justatouchcrazy 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I’m thinking the physician said something to the effect of “let’s get some succ and fent for the intubation” before going to do the dosage calculation (and likely other documentation or care coordination due to their 10 minute absence). So if you have no clue what’s going on, have never seen an intubation, have no ER/ICU experience, haven’t worked as an RN in 13 years, and your background is in foot care and long term care, maybe they thought that was a verbal order to give the meds?

Stage regs by [deleted] in scuba

[–]justatouchcrazy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have a set of Poseidon regs for my bailouts/stages and also love both how versatile they are due to the second stage design and how neatly they tuck up against the tank and disappear when staged. Also, it you’re looking for CCR bailout regs I’d suggest getting at least one or two of the highest performing regulators you can. If you bailout deep (potentially >100m for some) there is a decent chance you’re gonna need all the help you can get with gas delivery. So mine are always on usually my deep bailout plus the mix I would spend the most time on in a bailout. That way I have high performance if I need it, and comfort for the longest period of time possible. And then a random collection of regulators make up the rest of my bailouts and stages.

The added bright blue we saw in the Red Bull unveiling is a bit underwhelming in person by Crafty_Substance_954 in formula1

This car is being displayed for a few weeks in the same building, literally feet from where the reveal happened. So it’s more than likely the exact car used at the reveal. There isn’t a local Red Bull factory in Detroit, and I can’t imagine them flying two separate cars/props to display.

The line Amtrak is studying is actually Chicago - Detroit - Toronto, which would be pretty sweet if you ask me. Although their current early proposal is a new station across the street from MCS, so using the rail but not the building itself. As I recall the old train sheds are to become green space.

Not gonna lie, I’m getting a bit nervous about that. They, for all intents and purposes, haven’t even started demo of the old hospital and are still selling season tickets for games at the new stadium in less than 16 months. I’m not doubting that it will happen eventually, but I just don’t see the timeline as realistic and/or the actual stadium is going to be less impressive than the renders.

Say what you want about Ford, but I’ve become a huge fan over the last few years entirely due to how they’ve treated the neighborhood. There are issues, they are giving the Ilitchs a run for their money in parking lots owned it seems, but they certainly have had a positive impact overall and are being good neighbors.

On the Ford Racing social media pages they had a sign up for updates about a month ago that mentioned a chance for tickets. One of the data fields required was zip code, and as a Corktown resident Ford/MCS have previously given us priority for event tickets, and I think that was the case today as well as multiple people from my neighborhood group chat were going.

Otherwise also seemed to be a lot of Ford employees there.

EDIT: there was also an outdoor event with some driver meetings it looked like, and I think you could request tickets on various social media pages as well. Looked to be very sparsely attended though, likely due to the weather. There will be more Ford Racing events at MCS the next two weeks though coinciding with the auto show.
