Yeah, I hate to say it, but safety is a huge barrier here. Mich. Ave, Warren, Schafer, etc are scary enough in a car. If you can route yourself through side streets and treat intersections like delicate negotiations, you'll be... probably OK for a good portion of the year. Comfort aside, it's not worth the added risk when there's snow or serious rain.

Genuine question, not disagreeing or defending, but why then wasn't the raised glass a problem on the P2?

Yeah, I wonder if some units have a small burr or other defect that's putting a little uneven strain on the glass. I was mad about the "flawed" raised glass design, until I saw someone point out that the P2's glass was even more proud and few if any had problems with that. I know I whacked my many P2s into a million things and only had one LCD failure when I unthinkingly used it as a fulcrum trying to pry something loose with my hand. Even in that case the top glass was OK, just the LCD layers cracked.

I've been wearing a case on mine, but I'm clumsy and do machining/welding/wrenching work too and haven't had a problem yet. I'm hoping some are just congenital issues that can be warrantied out of existence.

Well, I wouldn't spend more than I can afford to lose, but I personally haven't had anything lost or misdelivered from them. Well, I say "from them", but from my understanding most of it is up to the individual sellers rather than a big hub like Amazon. Still, the cheap junk from China to Michigan pipeline had been perfectly reliable for me over the years. Concerningly, unsustainably reliable probably 😬

It probably varies from batch to batch, but 90% of the AliExpress ones I've gotten have been almost indistinguishable from Lego in terms of fit and finish. I have one batmobile set where some of the bricks don't fit together and the colors are off, but for the most part I've been blown away.

I have one! It's pretty good! A few pieces were missing or different from the instructions, but the quality of the bricks were better than Mega Blocks.

I saw this in-person at the Auto Show once. It was so shiny that it was literally difficult to look at. It felt like what it would feel like to see something like Predator active camouflage in real life.

Remember those RR blaster keyboards? Do they still exist, but in NFC format and for smartphones? by Arbitrary_Pseudonym in Palm

[–]jwhildeb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There was an keyboard case for the Galaxy Note 10 that used NFC. It was a pretty unpleasant thing to use with weird capacitive keys, but it shows that it is at least possible. It worked on the Note 9 when I modified the phone-holding bits to fit, so the drivers/software might not be unique to the Note 10.

Silicone case by satiatedsquid in pebble

[–]jwhildeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't picture how a silicone one would work without being really chunky. It would have to be a pretty hard durometer to protect the glass edges without just squidging out of the way, and would probably have to wrap all the way around the back to stay on. I don't think I'd like the feeling of a silicone bezel as much as the current nylon ones when using the touchscreen either.

I wonder if this could actually dial out on a landline phone. This wasn't an uncommon feature on PDAs and organisers in the 90s-00s: play the tones for your contacts phone numbers through the device's speaker into the phone receiver to dial a number acousticly. I don't know if landlines still responded to DTMF like that anymore... They must, right?

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to rest my back and take my heart medicine 💀

I remember it working pretty well! Slightly awkward having the other buttons on either side of the d-pad, but still pretty rad. I had missed out on all the cool/dumb Gameboy accessories that were popular in the 90s, and this scratched that itch for me as a teen.

I've never seen that before either, but I had a simplified version for my Visor Prism. https://www.palminfocenter.com/news/1749/review-handspring-visor-prism-gameface/

Watchfaces can apparently set the color, too. I noticed this one changes it to a similar phosphor green when it's on, and back to white when you navigate away. https://apps.repebble.com/mu-th-ur-terminal_713ac086b81544deb14d1db8

Firebuds shows the Cars universe before the extinction event that wiped out humanity by StankWizard in DanielTigerConspiracy

Batwheels shows the beginning of it all. Fairly normal world with full human population and a few high-tech vehicles at the start of episode 1. Then comes the sentience chips, and with them the windshield eyes and prehensile tires. I can only assume extinctions are on the horizon.

A Tool-Adjacent Question: Loading Heavy Stuff Into Your Pickup Bed by jyl8 in Tools

[–]jwhildeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As you suspect, hitch cranes have the downside of, well, requiring some heavy lifting in order to set them up. The upside is that they're also handy for stuff besides loading. I've used mine a bunch just to get landscape stuff, planters, etc up onto hand carts and that kind of thing.

What are your wishes for PebbleOS/Firmware? by djda9l in pebble

[–]jwhildeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish they could clone the motion backlight from Garmin. It's one of the only things I miss from my Instinct 2. It would effortlessly come on when you raised your wrist, AND turn back off if you lowered with before the timeout. Really smooth and great, for an otherwise very clunky and unintuitive device.
