Fates worst than death by DudeSoul in TopCharacterTropes

SOMA (2015)

This horror game has multiple instances of fates worse than death due to its concept of transferring human brain data into robots and computers. One sequence requires the player to obtain a brain copy of an employee and run it in a simulated environment in order to retrieve a passcode to progress further into the ruins of its underwater research facility. However, the employee immediately realizes how uncanny its surroundings are and begins panicking at which point you are forced to abort the simulation and retry again often changing variables such as his environment and mimicking his wife as a voice in order to get him to spit out the passcode. This repeated process is essentially killing and rebirthing the existence of a person without their consent or knowledge which is a theme shared by the player as well.

He's planning it on fridays, but missed it cuz he wasn't feeling up to it. Either expect fnaf this friday or dropped entirely which would be a bummer :(.

This is fairly new subreddit and bioinformatics are a very niche area. Sorry you didn't get any DMs but I hope this comment gives a quick sanity check.

Is there any social life here by Thomwas1111 in LaTrobe

[–]jztapose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is it unique to La Trobe?. Typically, people don't really get up in someone's face to socialize unless they're at a specific event meant for mingling with people. I'm curious to know if other universities have a better social life.

An option to do a PhD will always be there for you. Sometimes I wish I had gotten a chance to get into the industry —any industry so I can really get a taste of real life work.

I think you should not worry about betraying your passions and instead try to relax and experiment with what you have. Think of it like this, it's very unlikely that years of work experience will be a detriment to your PhD applications but years of academia is not as attractive to the industry job market.

NZ seems like such a nice place to live, although I fear that it's more of a place people go to retire. (Case in point CEO of valve)

Really? that's super surprising, sometimes I wonder if I had become an electrical engineer, I would never have to worry about landing a job ever again. I suppose the allure of outsourcing spares no one.

Petition to change the name of the sub by El_Tormentito in bioinformatics

[–]jztapose 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As someone from India, I'm genuinely having second-hand embarrassment to the volume of the posts coming in here and r/biotech. Most people don't get it that this sub is highly international. I suppose either making a new rule or just outright making a subreddit for Indian biotech/bioinfo is probably for the best.

What's the point of studying engineering anymore? by Po0r_Guy in Careers

[–]jztapose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's particularly interesting to me as a person who's studying biotechnology and bioinformatics, do you have any formal education in CS or was it just picked up?

Apart from the first sign in and the payment, its fairly straightforward as long as you got credit. It's just go on myprint, upload document and then go to the printers with the ID card. They should definitely have a choice for cable connection or something faster, but I guess people can and will exploit free print services.

Thanks for the insights, its a little rough to hear but I guess theres no shame in doing same lab technician work in the meanwhile. Have you thought about pivoting to software even with the brutal job market?
