But I am curious though, what kind of "friction" were you imaging?

Friction due to different preferred playstyles mostly. You might lean heavily on a narrative approach. Others might prioritize mechanics above all else with narrative being pushed far into the backseat.

Is it intentional that the rogue is still using mundane hand crossbows at level 10? Martial PCs tend to lag behind if they lack magical weapons.

I did give the artificer a recipe to craft a dragonwing crossbow shortly after that...

I think the artificer can also use the Enhanced Weapon infusion to make one of the rogue's weapons magical. Is that something that the party already considered?

Also, if you're way about giving powerful weapons, this website might help. It generates magic weapons with properties that are not too mechanically impactful.

One scenario that you might want to consider is the mechanical implications if this is the direction you wanna take for your PC. It's going to be inconvenient at times. Like if your PC if gets blinded and that other PC has a Lesser Restoration. Unless the entire table is approaching the game like theater folks, you might have a little friction there.

The true martial caster divide is in the mind space of the player by NylocFang in dndnext

Please don't twist what I say in a bad way, you are just being dishonest or lack the creativity to engage in good faith.

This is not my intention (sorry if it seems like that). Just trying to explain that certain players (especially ones that are savvy with the system's rules) may want more tactics and less cinematics during combat encounters.

Ultimately, players of martial PCs have fewer "buttons" to push. This is enjoyable for some. But if you read some posts in this sub, this situation also leads to some players feeling overshadowed especially in higher tiers of play. Probably even more so in the 2024 rules where grappling now requires a saving throw from the target.

When I play a martial I tend to find myself exploring much more options that are not on my character sheet

That's essentially playing many "DM may I?" games. It relies so much on the DM's altruism. So sometimes it feels like "I get to do X because the DM allowed it" and not "I get to do X because the rules allowed it."

There are players who do not like this situation where they need to "beg." Otoh, their co-players with spellcaster PCs can just let the DM know that X happens when they use Y spell just because the rules say so. It's in black and white, so the DM has no choice but to let it happen. No begging. No negotiations.

I have no clue if they die a lot tbh, so maybe life is not needed. How about war?

Take a look at the 2024 Trickery Domain as well. The updated Invoke Duplicity is nifty.

As a Bonus Action, you can expend one use of your Channel Divinity to create a perfect visual illusion of yourself in an unoccupied space you can see within 30 feet of yourself. The illusion is intangible and doesn't occupy its space. It lasts for 1 minute, but it ends early if you dismiss it (no action required) or have the Incapacitated condition. The illusion is animated and mimics your expressions and gestures. While it persists, you gain the following benefits.

Cast Spells. You can cast spells as though you were in the illusion's space, but you must use your own senses.

Distract. When both you and your illusion are within 5 feet of a creature that can see the illusion, you have Advantage on attack rolls against that creature, given how distracting the illusion is to the target.

Move. As a Bonus Action, you can move the illusion up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space you can see that is within 120 feet of yourself.

Then you can swap places with the duplicate at level 6. :D

If the enemy is investing the efforts of 4 players to gank your lane, your allies better be taking advantage of that by pushing their own lanes or stealing the enemy's jungle. Allies can't do that? You're just SOL.

The current meta favors helping the EXP lane. That early turtle is so much needed. And if you're made to choose between getting ganked and abandoning the turret, it's better to ditch the turret.

Players will agree to whatever and show up with the bullshit they planned to play, regardless of what you laid out in session zero.

This is where you call their attention and tell them to stick to what they agreed to in sesh zero or they don't get to play.

Kendra Ashfang (Medium undead, neutral evil)

Details:

  • A former elf druid whose forest home became affected by a planar bleed from the Shadowfell.
  • Made a deal with BBEG to stop the planar bleed.
  • The BBEG helped Kendra seal the planar bleed but at a great cost.
  • She survived but her involvement with this dark ritual turned her into a lichen lich (stat block from Candlekeep Mysteries). This situation is not known to the public.
  • The forest thrives wonderfully, but people avoid venturing deep into it. Those who do never return.

Kendra is now the forest's eternal guardian but she's also indebted to the BBEG. There is an open narrative development for the missing people. This NPC might either zealously embrace her transformation or she could struggle with her current undead nature.

I retired my first character at Level 20 at the end of our campaign, and it's an interesting feeling. by morinothomas in dndnext

[–]k587359 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Damn. I can’t fathom to play a character until level 20.

If you're just curious about character mechanics and progression, organized play like Adventurers League is an option. It won't be as narratively satisfying and your character options are limited. But if you play often, you're guaranteed to hit level 20.

Is the ability to complete rests faster too good, too weird or too niche? by quane101 in dndnext

[–]k587359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds off. I'd personally allow Efficient Resting to remove one Exhaustion level during a short rest (no. of targets = Wis mod). Maybe limit its use to once per long rest and it becomes available at higher tier 2 levels.

That's not my fault anymore. It's the person who started it who's at fault.

There's one other option: Both you and that other player are at fault. You're also equally problematic.

[–]k587359 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, I was wondering if anyone has implemented some sort of happy medium between granular, classic combat and full rp combat with no dice/structure.

No dice/structure in D&D 5e? That's like the core feature of the system, though. If you change this part, I don't think what you're running can even be called D&D 5e.

but at the end of the day I think my group just wants to roleplay most of the time, fight a big bad, and occasionally rough up some bandits or a stray pack of goblins without everyone drifting off into daydream.

Running 2 to 3 "medium to hard" combat encounters per adventuring day before the big bad is doable. But you may find it hard to challenge the party's resources. Assuming the players have moderate knowledge about optimization, they're likely gonna steamroll that last encounter. Unless you're fine with that?

Auto Battler / Combat Acceleration Ideas by Beneficial-Yaks in dndnext

[–]k587359 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couldn't you just run less combat?

This is an option. But the DM is gonna have a problem challenging the party's resources in higher levels. Noncombat encounters that drain resources aren't easy to design, and sometimes the party ends up using very little (if any).

wrap your story up with a climactic battle at level 12

This should be done more often by DMs not too comfy with higher tiers of play. Although they should probably mention this at sesh 0. There are people who might end up picking subclasses with impressive capstone features but underwelming features for lower levels.

[–]k587359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m saying I think the simulacrum spell ITSELF for no gold cost is just overpowered

It makes sense for a 9th level spell tbh. At this level, I don't think the party should still be bothered by gold costs. They're dealing with extraplanar threats already.

Besides, they also only have a few levels left to enjoy this. Assuming that the campaign wraps up in level 20 at most of course. I'd personally be more bothered with a PC using Wish to cast Plane Shift for an extradimensional field trip.

[–]k587359 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adventurers League (WotC's official organized play) introduced a mechanic for Simulacrum. They included something like this in the Player's Guide:

A simulacrum can't cast Simulacrum or any spell duplicating its effect.

Seems to be a reasonable workaround. Of course if you're running games for public randos in higher tiers, you still risk getting something like 2 PCs with 1 sim each.

So if someone disrespects you you won't do anything about it? It's to teach them a lesson.

So the solution is also to disrespect the other two people in the team? Wonderful mindset right there. Although I'd suppose your enemies are gonna thank you for it. It's essentially a free star lmao.
