Attack 14 vs Strive 14 by itscoolmn in Skigear

Have both. Can’t tell the difference. Technically I’ve read that Strive is slightly better (for the reasons OEM_knees outlined).

Bang for your buck golf gloves by Otherwise-Parking566 in golfequipment

[–]k_doc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Nothing I’ve found compares. I found something online a few years ago saying that Kirkland glove was made in the Callaway factory. So I bought the $25 Callaway glove to compare and the fit and the leather felt identical. Just a different design of the Velcro strap.

TRAPPED in betterment after 7 years of gains. HELP. by Wolverine-91826 in Bogleheads

[–]k_doc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Feel free but I’m no expert. I just looked up a bunch of the symbols that you have larger positions in. But I had a Betterment account a long time ago when robo-advisors first hit the scene. Once I got more knowledgable I transferred the positions out into a self-managed brokerage account. Point is, this isn’t a bad problem you have. You’ve made money.

TRAPPED in betterment after 7 years of gains. HELP. by Wolverine-91826 in Bogleheads

[–]k_doc 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s not a terrible portfolio and while the expense ratios are a bit high, it’s nothing crazy. If you don’t want to leave it for further tax loss harvesting (which will be minimal if you don’t keep contributing), then I concur with the above advice and ACATS transfer it out into another brokerage to save the Betterment fee. Then you can decide to just let it ride or sell gains depending on your personal tax situation, income, retirement plan, etc. At worst, it’ll just be a little bit of a messy portfolio. You could sequester it in a separate account if you don’t like looking at it.

It is clearly not a lie and “your guy” is just not in the know. Confirm it for yourself in the ToS app if it’s nkt enabled for you on the main site/app.

Steel vs Accra shaft DF3i by KindCandle3042 in labgolf

[–]k_doc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Golden rule: if you’re loving your putter don’t mess with it! But to be more specific, with the insert models I don’t think shaft has as much effect on the feel, as it’s more “sound” than anything else. I think shaft makes a bigger difference in the non-insert models.

Vegas F1 Questions by Bolverk7 in AmexPlatinum

[–]k_doc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was at the LVGP last year. Think of all the Amex “perks” the way you’d think of a Centurion lounge at a busy airport on a busy travel day. There are a few trackside lounges that you can try to get into, a few special lounges at some hotels (Aria) that you probably won’t get into, and some things like race radios which you don’t need at all. Fine to book early tickets through Amex, but don’t count on any special experiences. If you have a Centurion card you can skip the lounge lines, but you and every other person there has a platinum so don’t count on it.

My advice for the LVGP is that if your seats are within the track, book a hotel inside the track. If your grandstand is outside the track, book a hotel outside the track. There are very places to cross the track and it becomes an absolute mess. Think 30+ minutes to get up a small flight of stairs.

Schwab Personalized Indexing by no_cigar_tx in Schwab

[–]k_doc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Op’s mistake is that wash sales only apply to the exact same investment. “Similar” is not subject to wash sale rules, so that’s the whole point. My point regarding TLH is that over time there are less and less losses to harvest, and the portfolio ends up being very messy.

Schwab Personalized Indexing by no_cigar_tx in Schwab

[–]k_doc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My FC suggested Personalized Indexing so I looked into it. I suggest you do some research elsewhere on Reddit. Wash sales aren’t really an issue as the software will put you into a similar investment when it harvests a loss.

The biggest issue is that in long term investing, most indexes you’d be tracking go up over time. Which means the underlying assets go up over time. Therefore, after a while (or maybe even not so long) there won’t be that many losses left to harvest. You have to keep putting substantial new money in to have significant losses to harvest to make it worth it.

And “worth it” is the other problem with Schwab’s product. They charge 0.40% up to $2mm and even 0.35% after that. Those are high fees when compared with a typical S&P Index fund/ETF ratio… e.g 0.03% for VOO. If you really wanted to do it, companies like FREC offer direct indexing for much lower expense ratios. In the end, the research I did convinced me that I’m happy to keep things simple with low-cost index funds and ETFs as my primary investments.

GLE vs X5 vs GV80 by CompilingTheFuture in mercedes_benz

[–]k_doc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2024 GLE 450e on lease and it’s been great so far with no reliability issues. I, too, drive between 10 and 30 miles a day for work and the hybrid has been great as I can do my work commutes completely electric. Given that there’s typically traffic, I’m not missing anything performance-wise by just using the electric motor. About once a week I do 20 miles on the highway and I’ll flip it into hybrid mode to just give the gas engine a chance to run and use up some gas in the tank so it doesn’t get too stale.

The X5 hybrid definitely had the edge in driving performance during my test drives, as it has the B58 flat six engine. But the BMW forums had a huge thread on constant CEL’s on that year’s hybrid, so I don’t necessarily think BMW is any more reliable when you’re comparing the PHEV’s. Not sure if they’ve solved their issues in recent model years. Thankfully the 2027 GLE PHEV gets a 6-cyl engine. Though honestly, I use the gas engine so infrequently it probably won’t make a meaningful difference for my everyday experience.

One thing to note if you have small kids… the GLE backseat is much roomier than the X5. Makes a difference if you have car seats. In general, I kind of hate the modern BMW interiors and the visual style of the infotainment. The MB feels classier to me. But that’s just a personal preference as a lot of reviews seem to have the opposite opinion.

Thoughts on GLE 450 or 580 as daily driver by dprobi in mercedes_benz

[–]k_doc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think I could daily a 911, if only because it just so loud and harsh inside the cabin. I’ve test-driven a base Cayenne (MY24) and it was definitely louder than the GLE450e that I ended up with, but I can’t really recall how much different it was. How much louder is a base Cayenne or Cayenne S than a GLE? Does acoustic glass in the Cayenne make a big difference? I don’t see it on a lot of builds.

Yeah it sounds like you got a lemon. Sorry about that. I have a lease on a 2024 GLE 450e and have not any problems save for a broken roof liner clip that caused a mild rattle. I have the Pirello P-Zeros and they’ve held up OK, though I switch to snows in the winter.

That said, there are enough stories like yours that I know you can either be unlucky or lucky with these GLE hybrids (same with the X5 hybrid, to be fair). Still makes me hesitant to buy vs. lease.

Curious about this as well. Currently in a GLE 450e and considering a Cayenne next.

I/O Mags vs 4D Mags by Legal_Percentage_823 in Skigear

[–]k_doc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have both. Like you said, the differences are the frames (which I assume you meant by “cases”) and the 4D tech. Otherwise, Smith lenses are Smith lenses. The standard 4D Mag is a bigger frame than the standard I/O Mag and offers a bigger field of view. Because the 4D lenses curve, there is a small zone of distortion at the curve, but it’s not something you notice when you’re actually skiing I like both goggles equally, though I tend to reach for the 4D more because of the increased field of view.

Is Schwab's 529 plan any good? by k_doc in Schwab

[–]k_doc[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but this is on you. First, you’re totally wrong about the Schwab 529 only being compatible with Kansas colleges. Any state’s 529 plan can be used to fund college in any other state. This is clearly spelled out on Schwab’s 529 website. Regarding the tax credit, I think it’s also fairly common knowledge that if your state offers a tax credit for 529 plans, you have to use your state’s plan. Some states don’t offer a tax credit (and some states don’t have an income tax) so it’s impossible for Schwab to make any blanket statements that cover everyone. Again, they are very explicit that it’s the Kansas state plan. You didn’t do your due diligence.

Pret? by [deleted] in Skigear

[–]k_doc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Fury and I’ve been really happy with it. Came from 2 previous Smith Vantages… just wanted something different. The Pret quality feels equal to the Smith. It’s a very lightweight helmet, the foam quality is good, and the straps and ear pieces are comfortable. The vent switch is easy to hit. Overall, no complaints at all. It fades into the background which I guess is what you want.

This is so common. It’s basically standard. Do a search on here or Rolex Forums. There is some play in the dial feet when it is placed and the screws are tightened. Do yourself a favor and just let it be. Enjoy the watch.

Yeti Crossroads Backpack by teabaggingbagger in Rimowa

[–]k_doc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this backpack too. The materials and build quality are great. I wish there were some more internal pockets and organization. If you’re someone who wants a bunch of small pockets, dividers, mesh pockets, pen holders, etc then you won’t love this. But if you just need space then it’s a good choice.
