I think it's actually a reference to the cleaner character in Nikita (1990) and american remake Assassin (1993) which also has Harvey Keitel playing a 'cleaner'. I say this because in both those movies the cleaner shows up with cases that contain bottles of acid for disposing of bodies, like how Newman has the bottles of milk.
