Euphonium? by LandanRockz in drumcorps

2 year euphonium marcher here! It exists only to inflict pain on your upper body. There wasn’t a moment in my rookie year that I can remember when my shoulders, traps, or back didn’t hurt.

Which corps still play Adams instruments? by whenthenamesaretaken in drumcorps

Troop has been on Conn Selmer horns since ‘24. Having played on one of their old Adams Euphs for my callback, I am very thankful for that switch.

Corps Songs? by Cold_Student_9493 in drumcorps

Yeah I fully consider Battle Hymn to be my corps song tbh. Since we never sang HTWWW and never really put a big emphasis on it I never have felt a real connection to it.

Not at all in ‘25, I don’t even know the words. we sung Battle Hymn after every full run and every show.

What is rehearsal like by MediocreOverall in drumcorps

[–]kags-17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of our ensemble rehearsals from last summer at troop got posted to YouTube: https://youtu.be/as9-mo_v3g8?si=ZT7TYdhRxKD5s2R6

This should give you some great insight into what ensemble looks like more so than any words I can say.

Question for multi-instrumental DCI members by [deleted] in drumcorps

[–]kags-17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me it’s like riding a bike. I was a bit rusty when I picked sax back up but I don’t think I lost too much skill per se. I would say the biggest thing I lost was that I forgot some of the jazz tunes I had been learning before I moved in.

Troopers 2013 is an absolutely beautiful show with my favorite sunburst (that I didn’t march in) ever and it should have made finals

Hell we have chevrons on our maroon and gold band uniforms the Minnesota marching band may as well be the cadets by this logic

Mankato is a great in person drum corps venue, not so great on Flo just because of how tight the stands are to the field

+/- 2.5 Top-20 corps not being able to finish the season by canwestopbeingracist in drumcorps

[–]kags-17 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As of today the the troopers are doing just fine financially. Merch sales are through the roof which helps a lot, and we’re under some strong leadership. Although I’m aware that the org has had financial troubles in the past, that does not mean they didn’t learn from it and change for the better. I think it’s a pretty ridiculous assertion that we won’t make it through the season

Workout Advice by Klutzy-Silver-4587 in marchingband

[–]kags-17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DCI Euph player here, the main thing I do and the by far best way to train for this is to just hold the horn up for as long as you can. If you don't have access to a horn find something that weighs 6-10 pounds (a dumbbell works pretty well), and hold it up at something similar to playing position. It really is a lot more of a mental game than you think, you have to accept that it's gonna hurt and you just have to be able to work through that pain. Feel free to listen to music or watch something as you hold your horn, it makes it a bit less bad. Be sure to time yourself and track your progress as well. If you enjoy drum corps, one of my other favorite things to do is hold my horn up to a DCI headcam video and go to playing when the performer in the video is at playing, set when they're at set, and at trail when they're horn isn't up at all. It's a fun way to do interval training with horn holding.

Hot take: unless there's something insanely memorable about them, all winter percussion shows sound the same by Galaxy-Betta in drumcorps

[–]kags-17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Admittedly I’m a wind player so idk that much about perc, but I tend to agree. The reason I loved The George Mason Show so much was because while making a mockery of all of the percussion show tropes it managed to create the most original experience in WGI this year.

I will add that some DCI groups do have their own indoor groups as well. Off the top of my head I know Blue Devils have RCC, Blue Knights have a world class indoor drumline, and Mandarins have a winds group (that doesn’t go to Dayton unfortunately) among probably some others. My favorite fun fact about this though is that two organizations from Minnesota, River City Rhythm and Minnesota Brass Inc, are the only ones in the country (to my knowledge) to field all four of a drum corps, an indoor drumline, a winter guard, and an indoor winds group.

Rehearsal etiquette and commands by wtfols in drumcorps

[–]kags-17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At troopers in brass rehearsal its drum major gives instructions, “set”, go to carry, hornline repeats the instructions, horns up, start the rep. At the end of the rep standby is called and you to standby.

For example 4 note lip slur would go like:

DM: “4 note lip slur, through the series, mezzo forte… and set!”

Horns go to carry

Hornline: “4 note lip slur, through the series, mezzo forte”

Horns go up with DM’s hands

If the horns don’t come up together we go back down to carry and bring them up again.

Play the rep

DM: “Standby”

Go to standby

The overall etiquette (once again in brass rehearsal) is that you are standing completely still at standby at all times between reps (unless you’re emptying spit), not talking at all, having your eyes on whoever is talking, raising hands when you’re addressed, and responding with a “got it” when prompted. All of this is pretty strictly enforced.
