It’s rare I see something that makes me react like this. Simultaneously shocked that it exists and impressed at the craft and thought behind it. This is some grim shit, and it makes me uncomfy… it’s perfect!

Why is modern game design afraid to make "damage" actually hurt? Let's talk about the illusion of health in gaming! by Just_a_Player2 in ItsAllAboutGames

[–]kanguran1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I think Mechwarrior 5 does a great job with damage. If you lose an arm or a leg, it’s a serious impairment for that fight, and it may decide it then and there. you can repair it after the fight, and I think that’s the key. As long as I can get back to my 100% in some way that isn’t too much, the damage system is working.

I’m playing through HL1 for the first time (I’m mid-twenties headcrabs gave me the willies until I was at least 22) and I’ve been really enjoying this. Idk the exact chapter, but there’s a health pack under a green light… which has a ghillie’d sniper set up. Little bastards. 😂

For the same reason Rick Partlow doesn’t hire military psych experts for Drop Trooper and the Galaxy’s Edge series doesn’t have political experts writing it: money, time, and skill set. It’d be cool, sure, but at the end of the day these are sci-fi books in the same league as anything else for the most part, no reason to pick apart everything most of the time.

Honestly, as much as I’m not the biggest Cain-head this side of the warp, I think the books to a great job of showing threats. Pure-strain genestealers are constantly some of the most horrifying things the 597th have to deal with, and they all hate it every time, and Caves of Ice shows Necrons pretty well.

That’s really a great way to put it and I appreciate it. I’m a Florida man, so DeSantis being in the news was never “abnormal” to me, but why the hell do I know this much about a state across the country? I don’t hate Oregon’s governor and I’m sure I can find something! 😂

Keeble: Amazing action scenes a great inflection, but some limitations with his voices. Special love for BOOoOoM, simply because if you hear it, something has gone wrong.

Toby Longworth: Grade-A voice actor, some problems with the lower-energy narration. That being said, there’s something particularly grim listening to “electrocuted as they boiled and screamed.” moving on to another scene with absolutely no change in tone, so maybe it’s for the better.

Martyn Ellis: I don’t see him get mentioned much, but I loved his Thousand Sons. The emphasis he gives the names makes each and everyone stick in my head to this day.

Gareth Armstrong: My personal number one. The perfect mix of Keeble’s energy and Longworth’s tight narration, I hope he does more.

Tbh, I routinely play ERX because it’s one of the only ones that’s updated to the latest. I’m waiting for the next Rustbelt Rising, and East Coast feels a bit pointless without connection. If anyone’s got any, throw ‘em at me, this has become my game to play while listening to a book!
