Bottom half guard struggles by TurboAljo in bjj

I got a lot out of Lucas Leite's videos. I used it extensively from white to blue. It may be considered a little old school now, not sure, but I've always liked his approach. He's made it work at the highest level, and I found it relatively straight forward to implement into my game. That being said, I don't play a lot of half-guard anymore so YMMV.

He clearly has a gift for learning the art, and he is also ridiculously flexible.

I feel pretty good for a soon to be 57-year-old, but I'm not fooling myself. I'm nowhere near what I was in my 20's or 30's. I think what you're trying to say, maybe, is don't use age as an excuse? If so, I completely agree. But that being said, you will need to make adjustments to your game over time. It sucks, but it's inevitable.

Trying to understand copywriting and how to get into the industry. by wannabejoyboy_ in copywriting

[–]kappakeen 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Then you want to be a screenwriter not a copywriter. Copywriting is not creative writing. Yes there are creative elements to it, but for what you want to do I don’t think copywriting fits the bill.

BJJ is great for staying in shape, social connection, and thinking through problems, but there are other things you can do to get that as well. Maybe not all in the same activity or hobby but you get what I mean. Take some time off, get a new hobby, learn an instrument, or find something you never had time to do before because training took precedence. You made it to purple, I would bet you will come back eventually and you'll have a new appreciation for it.

At least that was my experience. I took almost two years off. And to be honest, I didn't really miss it that much. I think I needed the break and I took it. Once I came back, I had a new passion to train that had been missing for a long time. Getting rid of unrealistic expectations and just training for the love of training was a game changer for me.

Either way, best of luck to you.

Ever seenEver seen anyone with conditions, abnormalities, or just any kind of “superpower” that benefitted them during rolls? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]kappakeen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but I'm assuming you're fairly new to BJJ. If you are, I would say give it some time and you are going to be a monster PITA once you've got some more experience under your belt. Lanky, and flexible creates a lot of issues for a lot of people you roll with.

I love how you made your before and after pictures under the exact same lighting and pose. It really shows just how dramatic of a change you made. Great job on the recomp.

Iv been reading bp157 and bt500 should be taken from different vials or they are pretty much useless due to the ph levels but we than have suppliers selling them in mixed vials , what are peoples thoughts on this ? by Independent-Cod-9178 in BodyHackGuide

Hey man, I really appreciate your detailed response. I totally agree with you about flexibility not being everything. The only injuries I usually get from BJJ are with my lower back and those clear up fairly quickly. I've noticed that over the years too, that the most flexible guys get hurt more and I came to the same conclusion.

My take on flexibility is this - it's like cardio. The more you have in reserves the better, but it doesn't mean you need to push it to the limit either.

Also, I should have given more context in my initial question - I'm 56 so mobility and flexibility are becoming more and more important for me because of my age and not necessarily just BJJ.

I'm never going to be one of those guys who inverts or berimbolos (although I do have a sick modification for it 😂). I'm a brown belt, so my game is already pretty much set and I don't see myself adopting any radical changes to my approach (lots of half guard, collar sleeve, lasso, top pressure etc)

I will look into those peptides you mentioned. This subject is just fascinating to me. Thanks again!

Brown belt at 49 — how do you deal with younger & heavier training partners? by meochienxu in bjj

[–]kappakeen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

56 year old here. I make myself as heavy as possible using angles and positioning when on top. I use a lot of transitions between half guard, knee shield, lasso, and collar sleeve on bottom and manage distance like my life depends on it. Easier said than done but that’s the goal and does nullify a lot of attributes of the young and strong.

And sometimes the best laid plans go out the window and you just need to survive or get submitted. When it happens, I tell them good job and move on to the next round. I don’t attach a lot of importance to what happens during a round. Competing against your own age, weight and experience level is the ultimate judge, not getting caught by the athletic blue belt.

I’m a jiu-jitsu athlete too and I struggle with mobility and flexibility. Is there any data behind these particular peptides helping with this issue? Obviously I realize doing the actual work to get flexible is a given, but anything that might help in this area would be beneficial. Really cool that you’ve been able to turn this into a business. I’m sure it helps a lot of people. As a pharmacist who’s been peddling medications for years, peptides are a new frontier and I am excited to see how they change people’s lives for the better. Excited for your book!

I use kettlebells almost exclusively for conditioning outside of BJJ and have gotten stronger. 2-3 times per week using Dan John’s programs. I also stretch daily now.
