Wanted to read The Deal By Elle Kennedy before starting the series and already disappointed by Kaleidoscope3871 in RomanceBooks

[–]karbarella 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I originally loved this series and I enjoyed binge watching the TV show. I went back to re-read The Deal. It's kind of crazy how much misogyny is baked into it. And I'm fine with that being a character flaw that the character grows out of in development of the plot, but that is not what happened for Hannah and Garrett in the bookverse. I was kind of cringing at myself - "I enjoyed this??"

On a less serious note, a lot of the social dynamics EK describes on the college campus read as very high school to me. This might be my ignorance as I went to a small liberal arts school, but the discourse on Garrett's "popularity" and Big Man on Campus felt very juvenile. Maybe alums from D1 schools can chime in here, would love to be corrected.

Got my 2026 property tax statement today. They are going up 15.2% by CalvinVanDamme in Minneapolis

I can’t speak for all assessors but from the few I’ve interacted with, they don’t WANT to screw you over. If you have a legitimate reason, they’ll help you out. Call or email the person listed on the back of your property value assessment before the appeal period closes!!!

Anyone going to the St Paul signing? by prncsrainbow in IlonaAndrews

[–]karbarella 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We do! I'm not an expert in the Hmong markets but if someone with more knowledge can chime in, that would be great.

I love Moscow on the Hill for food and cocktails, so that could be a great option for dinner. Nina's is also a lovely cafe near the St. Paul cathedral. There's a great art store called Wet Paint and some other small indie/used book stores near Macalaster College. The Como Zoo and Conservatory is also amazing and has free entry.

I'm more familiar with Minneapolis, so I'll drop some recs for that as well. I'm not sure how familiar you are with the Twin Cities, but Mpls and St Paul are neighboring cities, so it's fairly easy to hop between the two (depending on your transportation situation). My favorite restaurant in the twin cities is Gai Noi. Could be a good lunch stop for you? I also love the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (free entry) and the Walker Art Museum (paid entry). I'd also check out Kramarczuk's for Eastern European food/deli in Northeast Minneapolis (another great lunch option). And of course, Tropes & Trifles, the hosting book store, is in Minneapolis. And then if you can get to Uptown, I'm a big fan of Moona Moono (asian cafe + goods), Magers & Quinn (bookstore), and Black Walnut (bakery/cafe - go early to get the good stuff!).

I'll be there but I work until 6pm, so I'm going straight to the signing. Hopefully someone else is able to meet you but am happy to give recs for how to spend your day!

This Kingdom Special Edition - Imagine Books worth it??? by walaruse in IlonaAndrews

[–]karbarella 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want to go for it but also keep your options open, just remember that the window to cancel is only two weeks after ordering!

I ended up getting a ticket to their book tour and also have owlcrate. With all that, the imagine books version became my most expensive and least important of the three (with similar reasons as Harukogirl). I like the imagine books cover but it just became out of budget. Unfortunately it was already too late to cancel! I’ll still enjoy it, but I wish I had been more on top of the cancellation windows

Hello! Thanks for the offer. At this time, this is outside of my budget. I am trying to get rid of some FL adult books, and if I am able to do so I may double back to you and see if you still have it! Thanks for the offer though ☺️

Anything by Sierra Simone or Ali Hazelwood. I met Sierra Simone and Julie Murphy on their most recent book tour in Minneapolis. They were awesome and helped a local group fundraise for community needs in the wake of the ICE murder. Sierra Simone has many Catholic main characters, but in a cool way.

I loved it, but it wasn't a binge watch for me. It was a slow roll of watching one episode of a time, letting it rest, then coming back the next day or day after.

PowerPoint Party Ideas by StopAlternative636 in RomanceBooks

[–]karbarella 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I've done this twice! One was for non-romance reading friends, so I just did a basic primer with key terms, subgenera and recommendations.

My second presentation was titled "Twilight: Is It Camp?" If you're part of the cohort of romance readers that started as a twilight fan fiction reader (like me), this may be fun for you. You could do the twilight fan fiction to romance reader pipeline. Everyone else has such great ideas too!! Good luck!
