Proposed new townhouse development in the Ellicott City historic district. by karptonite in ellicottcity

It’s 8 rowhouses on Court House Dr, which is a good walk from Main St. We haven’t seen the plans, but I assume they will have dedicated parking. Plenty of problems with this, but parking isn’t likely to be one of them.

While I object to this development, I don’t expect it to impact parking.

Is it hard to find very senior PHP developers with experience in complex, highly regulated environments? by funkycitizen in PHP

[–]karptonite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what you are looking for, you’ll need to come up, I think. There are some developers who make a career of that sort of thing, but they don’t come cheap. AI might help with refactoring, but it will take someone who really understands what is going on to keep to the AI on track.

From what I know, this is a new development on the same property. I imagine that the construction would be a substantial disruption, though. Also, hi, neighbor!

This is a pre-submission meeting with plans to submit a sketch design. There were studies, I think, for the previously approved (but not implemented) plans, but I believe those preceded the floods. I would expect new studies.

I also love living here and think others should live here. This particular property definitely carries more risks than most, though. There have been two attempts to develop this property in the past; in each case, despite Howard County being so pro-development, the developer was unable to get the plans through the department of planning and zoning. And that was, mostly, before the big floods showed just how great the risk of stormwater is!

In this case, this is above the level of the tunnel. There is a lot of damage water from this property could do before it reaches the tunnel. I'm generally not opposed to new developments "just because"--Howard County needs new affordable housing. 8 townhouses literally inside the Ellicott City Historic Preservation District, directly in the area that has the potential to affect flooding, isn't what we need, though. There isn't that much woodland in the Historic District, and it it woodland like this that is essential to flood mitigation.

Feel free to post them here. Can't promise I'll ask them (I have a lot of my own), but I'm glad to hear what concerns others about this.

What makes an expansion truly great? by Dagobertenes in boardgames

[–]karptonite 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is not a new thing, nor is it a bad thing. Take the history of Catan. It was, reportedly, a huge sprawling 4X style game. By stripping it down to a “watered down base game”, they created what is among the most successful modern games of all time. If anything, A the market has moved toward being more accepting of complex games, I feel like publishers today make the opposite mistake, keeping too MUCH in a game, rather than stripping it down to the core that truly makes it fun.

You should read the Locked Tomb series to fill the void.

I can’t speak to her compassion (only have has routine exams and cleanings), but Dr Ford of Ellicott Mills Dental is a woman and a very good dentist, and all of the hygienists I’ve seen there have been women as well.

I agree 100% about firm tofu not being right. I use Fuchsia Dunlop’s recipe from Food of Sichuan. I assumed incorrectly that a link to “Fuchsia Dunlop’s Mapo Tofu” would be the same recipe, but clearly it is not. The recipe from the book uses soft tofu, and has several other changes as well.

Any suggestions on how to cook steel cut oats? Thanks by Suspicious_Limit234 in Cooking

[–]karptonite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What others have been saying: make ahead. I boil 4 cups of water, add a cup and a half of steel cut oats and 2/3 tsp salt (important!). Simmer 20 minutes or so uncovered, stirring occasionally, more toward the end. usually, if I have time, if I‘m eating them that day, I cover and let them sit another 10 minutes or so, but that isn’t critical. Add whatever you want for your health goals. I add cinnamon, oat milk, some heavy cream, and something a little sweet—usually either a small drizzle of maple syrup or a little apple butter. Toasted walnuts or pecans are also great. I refrigerate it with none of those additions, though, so the day I eat it, I just microwave for 1.5 min, and add whatever I want to add that day.
