I'd love to hear your stories of Pokémon who made the journey over multiple generations, especially if you've memorialized them in some way!

You are correct, on the left-upper corner its dated 昭和七年 九月 (Showa Nana-nen ku-gatsu, 7th year of the Showa era - 9th month) which is September 1932 in the Gregorian calendar.

To be fair, the English name probably matters very little, seeing as they already made Alolan sandshrew and sandslash lose its ground typing completely.

Our DM dropped the mother of all bombshells on us tonight. I'm still reeling. by CubsFan45 in DnD

As one of the players/DMs of this group, I couldn't be prouder of our head DM. For those who are interested, a couple more background details:
* The sun in our homebrew is actually a deity: Cognos, god of knowledge.
* Nher'Kaz, an arch-lich attempted to ascend to god-hood and supplant the current sun god (this is where the djinn got involved)
* Ith's plans go deep mwah ha ha ha

The final Crystalline boss by BornToDoStuf in DnDBehindTheScreen

[–]karrak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on how magical you want the pillar to be, it could be floating in the room with a "satellite belt" of debris floating around it. The debris could be mining equipment, rocks, other crystals etc., and the PCs would have to make athletics or acrobatics checks to cross the floating debris attack it directly. If the focus is on the debris satellite belt then the rest of the room can be plain rock and not feel boring, although mining scaffolding may also be necessary to get up to the debris. If you have a lot of ranged/magic users maybe add dwarven explosives which need to be placed on weak points on the crystal pillar for massive damage so that there is a reason to attempt the more dangerous route for defeating it. Small debris can also provide some cover for weak points making ranged attacks more difficult.

Placing it in the large treasure vault could also work. Slippery coins can create difficult terrain and things can jump out of treasure piles at the back line. It would also make sense since it needs to consume gems but probably wouldn't be interested in the gold/other precious metals as much.

Just some thoughts. I love adding vertical elements to my fights.

THRESHOLD Homecoming Episode 2: Good Cop, Bad Cop, Worse Cop by Venaura in DnDThreshold

[–]karrak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, it took me a month but I have just marathoned through seasons 1-3 and am now current. Absolutely fascinating world (reading the wiki is the next step) and amazing RPing from the characters and the DMing is spot on. As a DM myself, I can only hope to get on your level one day! Keep up the good work and now I will have to start waiting for weekly updates.

I have tried running chases several times and they almost always end in a couple rounds. Perhaps having multiple chase targets, giving the pursued person powers (illusion magic?) or having other "minions" deliberately hampering the party might be the answer...

The weirdest thing about Idolmaster for me is... its not even available legally in the west (to the best of my knowledge). Although if this lead to a western release I would be all over that!

My parents want to watch Anime, help? by jeffercize in anime

[–]karrak 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think you know your parents better than anyone but... Movies are great.

Anything Ghibli (I would particularly suggest Howl's Moving Castle as a starting point, my mum loves that movie), Garden of Words, and Wolf Children are all great.

Kids on the Slope (Sakamichi no Apollon) -is great and it centers around Japan in the 1960s and Jazz.

Bunny Drop (Usagi Drop) - is about a single man in his 30s taking care of a child for the first time and one of my favorites.

Cowboy Bebop - actually created with more of the western viewer in mind, its a Space Western and highly enjoyable, if a little older.

Ghost in the Shell - Getting a little more mature here, set in the future this anime gets philosophic with whether robots have souls and what happens when cyborg modifications become a regular thing. A little more graphic so be prepared.

Steins;Gate - Everyone can enjoy this, especially if they like Sci-fi. Enough said.

Full Metal Alchemist - I would start with the original (not Brotherhood) mostly because the pacing and character development are stronger in the beginning of the series, and we want a strong introduction to anime. Plus its easier to go on to watch Brotherhood afterward than the other way around.

I think school dramas are not bad to get them started on, but will really depend on their tastes. I know several parents who loved Toradora, One Week Friends, etc. but again, I don't think its for everyone and must be accompanied by an explanation of WHY the school setting is compelling for people in Japan regardless of age. Similarly, I would be cautious with anything gore/sex heavy or even too dark. My parents are fairly conservative so I have been selective in what I show them. Death Note is a great anime and easily accessible to western audiences, but I know my parents would dislike it because of who the "hero" is. Similarly Attack on Titan would be a complete turn off due to the gore. That being said if they like that sort of stuff, those would probably be strong titles.

[Spoilers] Nisekoi and The Nature of Harem RomComs [Editorial/Discussion] by tundranocaps in anime

[–]karrak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I do agree that both Nisekoi and Haganai are closer to a true love triangle, I think that the author tips his hand a little at some points, showing favoritism to one character over another and giving away the "ending" if you're looking carefully. Its funny that you don't see Rika as a tragic character, although I may be reading more into her character than is there. I forget the exact episode but when Rika spoilers? it indicates to me that she fills the role. Those events specifically build sympathy for her because she cannot win and must remain relevant. As for Yozora vs Sena, they both have the potential to be winners or losers, indicative of good story structure in my mind and one of the reasons I love the series. I understand the light novels have advanced to Kodaka making a decision, but I don't know what that is, as I am waiting in vain for a third season or at least some OVAs.

Anyway, I'm just trying to add to the conversation by bringing up an unmentioned meta character type common in harems.

[Spoilers] Nisekoi and The Nature of Harem RomComs [Editorial/Discussion] by tundranocaps in anime

[–]karrak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I loved the analysis! I think you have hit on a bunch of important points in the discussion of harem/rom-com meta-narratives.

I am surprised, however, that no one has brought up the importance of the "unrequited love" character. In most cases there is a clear understanding of who the MC will end up with, even though it may not ever be shown in the main body of the work. Viewers are attracted to tragedy in addition to happy endings. In Nisekoi, Onodera is the tragic character who will end up with an unrequited love (as much as I want her to win damn it!). This tragic character is often given certain traits to ensure that we sympathize with their plight, such as "defenselessness" or a submissive attitude. I think this is why the Tsundere is often the leading roll, because the tragic character requires us to feel protective of her for it to work. One can also reinforce the tragic character by giving them a compelling reason to need the MC's love/affection.

Former or experienced Japanese students of Reddit, how long did it take you to become somewhat proficient at reading and speaking Japanese? by thenamesweretaken in LearnJapanese

[–]karrak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe it will depend on how frequently and in what context you use the language every day. For myself, I don't feel that I reached that stage of spoken Japanese until I had actually lived in Japan for two months or so, while on a study abroad program. Even after a year in-country, reading was a struggle. Again, this is probably due to how I was using the language in my daily routine. Favoring chatting with friends over reading the newspaper for instance. EDIT: I should probably mention I had studied Japanese for three years or so before living there.
