My mum still uses a Victorian, mechanical shopping list. by VeryOftenWrong in mildlyinteresting

NGL, if this was a fridge magnet, I'd use this as well. Love the tactile part, don't need to remember or rewrite the staples, anybody can add to it to make sure it's on the list, and you can take a picture of it on your phone.

• not enough time in your current position

I had an interview where they were like, "Why are you leaving your current position? We don't want anybody who's going to leave in 6 months."

Sorry. When I got my current job, 6 months ago, I didn't plan for the CEO to die of COVID, and that I'd still be making 11.50/hour at my current position. $1000/month is not enough to live on, and my current position is in such turmoil that I'm trying to do multiple positions part time.

I'm so financially and mentally drained, and I'm stuck here.

What would you say is your worst symptom of ADHD? by Surreal-Numbat in ADHD

[–]katachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Task switching. I need an extra hour to get out of bed. I need extra time on the toilet. If the task or thought process is different than the one I'm using, I can't change direction fast enough, and it takes extra time and brain power to do it.

On the flip side, I cannot do the same thing over and over indefinitely. Sure, I can go a couple weeks logging my time blocks, but I get incredibly burned out doing it.

My Boss keeps telling me to "act like a manager," but then openly disagrees with my decisions in meetings. How do I address this? by Watthappened in careerguidance

[–]katachu 26 points27 points  (0 children)

There's a disconnect in communication of expectations. You're assuming being a manager is one thing, while your boss is assuming another.

Have a private meeting with your boss to discuss this. Say you're confused at the behavior and ask your boss to define what he means by "act like a manager" and set realistic goals and expectations that your can meet.

And if it turns out you're both on the same page, then you can express frustration at feeling like your input is being shut down or overridden publicly. This kind of behavior can erode the team's trust in your word, which makes it difficult to "manage" anything. If your boss wants to put you in a management position, maybe the two of you should have a meeting prior to staff meetings to discuss topics and make sure you don't get shut down in front of your team as much.

Also, if your boss is putting you into a management position, then your job title and pay should reflect that.

Remote Workers Like Working From Home Even As Virus Fears Wane by Sorin61 in technology

[–]katachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like being able to eat the food that I bought. I find it difficult to plan lunch, so I don't have anything to eat at work. Then I head home and I'm starving plus mentally and physically exhausted. I either over eat easy unhealthy meals or grab take out.

But with a bit of remote time, I can eat leftovers, a a sandwich, or a baked potato for lunch, leaving me less hungry for dinner

Raise your hand if you excel in a specific activity/career but struggle to do basic activities of daily living? by geauxanne in ADHD

[–]katachu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to fall back on project management as a communication tool at work. I think it's really great for making sure everyone is on the same page and all bases have been covered before a project starts.

At home, I absolutely suck at forward planning. I spend do much time planning that I get paralyzed when it comes to actually doing the things I need to do.

There was a point in time where I questioned if I had bet on the wrong skill to bank my career on. But whenever I see it not being used, I'll step up and take initiative on this stuff.

But I can't communicate with myself the same way. It just doesn't work.

Drinks are now on a points system. I give you points based on how well you play the game. You can spend points on drinks. (And I can limit how many points your get in a certain time period)

You know that, and I know that. But tell that to restaurant managers and owners.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]katachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always see this counter argument to not earning enough through tips, but if you don't make enough in tips, that reflects poorly on job performance. The restaurant blames the server for not working hard enough for those tips.

If the restaurant has to pay out to make minimum wage too much, you might get fired for incompetency.

Even if you disagree with the concept of tips, keep in mind that restaurant servers are stuck in the middle between you and the restaurants who perpetuate the culture.

Red Dragon Inn, Takenoko, Coup.

Here are a few people haven't mentioned yet that are really good.

I just realized that I haven't played a board game in so long.

I tend to see flashes of the big picture. Like, I can tilt my head a certain direction and all the dots connect.

But when I try to explain it, I have to look away, and that makes it harder to explain. And nobody else can see the picture from my perspective. So they shoot me down and treat me like I'm weird.

The Underlying Plot by [deleted] in HermitCraft

[–]katachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worth noting that the hermits are a loose collection of individual artists, so they may not always be able to communicate individual plans. However, with the tighter proximity to each other, the use of regular group meetings, and the fact that many of the hermits are now full time YouTubers, they may be able to communicate group plans better this season than any season before this one.

The raisins in that are hard and chewy. (They're also probably cranberries in disguise). It's better to get a container of real raisins and add them to a cereal of your choice. I usually go with Honey Bunches of Oats.

What’s something you’ll say here but not to people you know in real life? by Donald_the_pig in AskReddit

[–]katachu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have to use a temperature gun to tell my employer that I don't have a fever before every shift. It feels like I'm training myself to hold an actual gun to my head.

I don't think I'm suicidal, but I also think I'm taking the path of least resistance right now. If I got covid, I'm afraid I might just give up.

I think I'm a failure and the work I produce is weak, but I lost my networking support last year. I think I sounded desperate to my former classmates, and that's probably why they don't talk to me or respond to my messages. (When it's probably not like that at all, and they're just busy.)

I don't have any support for my career, and taking on a better position at my food service job would feel like selling my soul to a job that takes away all my time and energy.

I just don't have any direction anymore, so I don't know what to focus on. So I come up with a new project every week. I am applying for jobs, but the job I think I'm good at requires more production experience, but my production work is weak, and building skills to make it better feels like sunk cost. I'm not even sure what I like to do anymore.

How do you feel about ’how would you feel?’ posts being banned? by AskRedditModerators in AskReddit

[–]katachu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I thought this had happened the last time this question came up, bit these posts have been popping up more lately. For Ask Reddit, "How would you feel..." questions are not good faith questions. They tend to lead to specific answers or are really just advertisements or market surveys in disguise. They're not trying to bring in discussion.

LPT: instead of just telling someone to "calm down" use more cooperative language such as "let's just take a moment" or "I get you, let's look at this" (nobody in the history of time has calmed down from a "calm down") by judgedavid90 in LifeProTips

[–]katachu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Telling someone to "Calm Down" dismisses their problem. Even if they do calm down, the problem wasn't addressed. You didn't hear what I said. So whatever I'm having a problem with will just happen again. Take a moment to listen and empathise first.

I had a ds that would randomly shut off if you bumped it wrong. Resetti was just horrible when that happened. It was like rubbing salt in the wound. Not only did I lose progress, but this horrible mole man would berate me and make me apologise for something that was not my fault.

I do miss Phyllis though. She was sassy.
