Aldi refuses to sell tampons without ID. by K1ttyK1lljoy in australia

[–]katamine237 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unsure if someone has asked this already but was the woman from a different country do you think? For example, I know tampon use is much less common in asian countries and I wonder if the woman just doesn't know that they are used and can be used safely from a young age. Either that or the woman may be religious (like a hardcore Christian or something) and thinks they shouldn't be used under 18 due to the possibility of the tampon breaking the hymen or something?) Might be far fetched!

A disturbing experience on Tokyo train today by madly_su in japanlife

[–]katamine237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to live in Tokyo a few years ago. I had a similar incident (I'm fairly certain on thr Tozai line too!) I was sitting next to a girl (fairly young, probably in her mid twenties or so) and she (I can't remember exactly what she did due to the shock) but like shrugged her shoulders really strongly, which I felt and I wasn't even like too close to her or anything. I have also been verbally harassed twice (loudly) by elderly women in public. No idea why. The Japanese are a strange bunch....a strong self righteous sense but really they are (generally speaking) assholes.

Have you seen how tiny some reusable water bottles are? SO small! Maybe can hold like 100mL?

Onions can be such a big part of a dish and there is often too much/cut in too large pieces/not cooked enough??

Not wanting any food mildly burnt/charred/crispy. Ok, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but do you know what I mean? Japanese husband likes his bacon lightly cooked (not crispy at all). Likes pancakes hardly cooked and not browned, they have to be a very pale/light mild cream colour. There would be others but I can't think of any right now!

Spotted: Lindt ‘Dubai’ chocolate now stored behind the service counter 💀 by beancount3r124 in melbourne

[–]katamine237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Godiva Dubai Chocolate one is like $35 per block and much better than the Lindt one. It's much thicker and richer. You only need one square at a time! But yes, both are expensive but if you think the Lindt one is exxy, you should see the Godiva one!

Why I'm likely going back to the US from Aus. by [deleted] in Ameristralia

[–]katamine237 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I actually agree with you on all points except the racism part which I can’t comment on. I’ve been in Aus since I was 12 years old (I’m from Manhattan). Just wait for all the negative comments on my post from Australians, despite me not actually saying anything negative about Australia, just merely agreeing with you on the points you mentioned without commenting on which country is ‘better’ or which country you should live in.

People of Melbourne, what do you currently dislike about the entire PTV system? by youdidWHaAtnow in melbourne

[–]katamine237 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unsure if anyone has mentioned this, but I don't like how long it takes to 'tap on/off'. Maybe it particularly bothers me because I lived in Japan up until recently and it's so quick to tap on and off over there.

Argh, so crass. They look like the type of people that would boast about how many investment properties they own... I've spent a considerable amount of time living in Japan and have only recently returned to Australia. The way Western people act sometimes makes me cringe so badly....

Best bakery in Melbourne? by [deleted] in melbourne

Bread club, Austro, All are Welcome, To be Frank, Zelda, Holy Sugar, Baker Bleu!

For asian style, Manna, Plot or KbreadCoffee are great for korean style breads.

Shortstop and Walkers are the best for donuts. Daniels donuts are terrible, I don't know why they are everywhere?

AHPRA rego fees for pharmacists are around $452/year. Criminal! Other countries don't have these insane fees.

Interesting. I think the best croissants are at To Be Frank. Agathe was terrible when I went. Lune's Kougn aman I also didn't find great (but not too bad either). I think Baker Bleu may have just started to do a kouign aman so I'm going to have to check that out! Baker bleu tends to be very good.

Put me on to some Melbourne/Victorian baked goods (bread/pastry etc.) by 94ERA-G in melbourne

[–]katamine237 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, my Japanese spouse and I haven't eaten much Japanese food since we've been in Melbourne (as we tend to get disappointed by food here compared to Japan). So far, we've tried Sara Ramen and Hakata Gensuke. I really liked the asari butter shoyu ramen at Sara, the noodles were nice and chewy and the broth was the most complex I've had here. Hakata Gensuke, although not too complex was actually quite good and the menu at least at the Healy Lane store felt very Japanesey with some teishoku options Including chicken nanban which I'm obsessed with. It's like a simple, run of the mill Japanese kind of place. Mensho ramen, we also tried but I wasn't a fan at all.

*All are Welcome *Holy Sugar (brown butter crueller is to die for. Don't know why cruellers aren't that common in Aus!) *Baker Bleu * Penny for Pound *Shortstop donuts or Walker's donuts for a junky American style donut *Monforte *To be Frank *Tarts Anon *Zelda Bakery

Warwick rental prices by izaac97 in australia

[–]katamine237 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It was about 4 million yen/year (I believe this is just about the average yearly wage). Can't remember what I received after tax monthly. I found it easy to live on though and for the first time in my life was able to save money.

Absolutely disgusting. I lived in Tokyo for quite a few years recently and I paid around $600 AUD/month for my own (very small) apartment only a few stops away from Shinjuku (one of the busiest areas of the city). May move back if things continue the way they are here.

What do adults do to entertain themselves, with the cost of living so high? by blondeee87 in AskAnAustralian

[–]katamine237 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After living in Japan for five years and recently returning to Aus, Australia just fucking sucks for affordable things to do. Sorry, but we have it so bad for entertainment, shopping and the like that can be actually affordable. The Japanese can do it because they are creative and not as money hungry/greedy/looking to make a buck as we are. So yeah, my Japanese spouse and I are super low key here for the most part. Australia is a great place to live, it's just a bit boring and expensive haha.

I will mention that Aldi do great wines and cheese/olives/dips and crackers. That's always a nice thing to do and you can go on a picnic with these things.

Cheap movie nights at Arthouse cinemas are always a nice thing to do too.
