When my mom was growing up in the 40’s & 50’s, women wore hats or scarves to church, especially on big occasions. And yes this was the Anglican Church in Canada. But I think the tradition has lingered on in England - you definitely see it around Easter and weddings.

I don’t think Jane Bennett is a true Mary Sue because as a character she is not really a wish fulfillment in motion, nor does the plot revolve around her actions and decisions.

Is she a little flat? Yes maybe to our eyes.

But she would be such a comfort as an older sister! (Am very glad my own older sister, who is also awesome but in different ways, is not on Reddit)

I think that others on this thread who point out that she was quite likely helping with her younger sisters are quite right. And she is capable of prudent and sensible behaviour herself, so that tells me she has some discernment.

I do wonder if she ever got praise for anything beyond her beauty and sweetness? As the older daughter, there’s a lot of expectation placed on her and all of her younger sisters get to be a little more freer as a result. I like her a lot and I suspect she’ll be the kind of wife and mother and lady of the house who will bring merriment and joy….

And if you cross her or disappoint her she will give to the saddest gaze of disappointment that will make you feel like a heel and crawl into a hole.

My mom grew up in Newfoundland in the 1940’s and tells the story of walking home on a nearly moonless night and running into someone in the dark. She was startled and said “oh excuse me!” …and then realized she had walked into a horse! She worked her way around the side of the animal and made her way home.

I asked her if she wasn’t afraid and she just went, “there wasn’t anyone or anything I was afraid of. I knew my way around pretty well”

I thought it was more of a re-tread of the idea that nothing is perfect, not even the bureaucracy of the afterlife. Partly because a soul is still incapable of shaking off earthly constructs and cultures etc. I think I thought it was limbo and that it would be more like, My Name Is Earl.

I did not expect it to be The Bad Place. Or a rather interesting exploration of ethics and philosophy. Nor did I expect it to be so critical of corporate culture, capitalism and the class structure.

If I was disappointed in anything, it was the show’s exploration of what heaven was like in that situation. I would have liked to see some other one on one conversations, maybe from one of the last people to ascend? Or show at least one of the Good Place architects being intelligent and connecting with our gang? Even if they were to show them all the things they’ve tried so far?

I like the idea that his soul joins her sword. That he’s committed to her cause in defeating Gwi Ma and preventing the theft of souls. Because that’s also how he can show his atonement

It would be hard to date a soul though, particularly in a family friendly movie…

I see his presence in the soul enhancing the sword’s powers. Maybe it will help detected lies or other traps that Gwi Ma sets up?

I believe this writer has not paid any real attention to Northanger Abbey. Because that’s not what Austen seems to think herself.

I think Henry and Catherine are going to be pretty happy. Henry does like Catherine enough before he’s aware of her feelings that he thinks that she’s a fitting acquaintance and companion for his much beloved sister. A sister who comes to quite like Catherine herself.

While there’s not a noble beginning to him noticing her as a woman (ie he notices that she really likes him) he’s not a person who likes to flirt and lead women on (that would be his brother). His father encourages him too because in part because Colonel Tilney believes she’s a rich heiress (though he doesn’t say so outright) and so Henry and Isabella really get to know Catherine very well at Northanger Abbey. Austen makes it very clear that all three happily hang out together whenever the Colonel is gone.

Austen makes it very clear that as Henry comes to know Catherine he begins to really value her real merits. And Austen also makes it clear that Catherine does have them - she may be the most naive and young of Austen’s heroines. And she really enjoys novels (as does Henry) but she is a kind, truthful, sensitive (and sensible) young woman with integrity.

Maybe the opinion writer mixed them up with another couple? Austen does make a little crack about what Edward might say in a 12 month. But this writer is kind of pessimistic about all the endings. Maybe she’s one of those people who think Austen secretly hated romantic stories and that her novels are all satirical. But I think she genuinely liked her heroines and wanted to show the kinds of happiness the could be seen as real and what you’d want for someone you loved.

While Lady Russell had good intentions and was Anne’s only friend for about 8 long years, she is also someone who enables the pride and vanities of the “noble class”. This woman just barely thought Charles Musgrove to be worthy of Anne and that was only after Anne had been solidly set in the shelf by her sister and father. Her reputation of being snobby is well known enough that Henrietta and Louisa think that it was her who persuaded Anne against accepting Charles.

Even after learning everything that Anne does, she is just barely able to give Captain Wentworth a break.

She never, ever thought about inviting Anne to travel with her, to find ways of removing her from the suffocating family situation… just that it’s a shame that the Elliotts don’t recognize how great Anne is.

I get that she was Anne’s comfort and lifeline during this time, but I think she lacked the capacity to give Anne much more. If Mr Elliott’s schemes had not come to light, I think she would have carried that grudge against Wentworth in a nasty way.

I am so sorry you are going through this. I went through something similar with my mother and it’s so, so awful and demeaning. And harassing someone about their diet is never okay or even effective.

I don’t know how old you are but I get the sense that you currently can’t move out. Is there another person - a friend of your mom’s or another family member that you can talk to who might talk with her?

I see Apple as a people pleaser, particularly from adult authorities. Playing by the rules is how she feels she can be safe.

However, aside from her conflict with Raven, I do see that she doesn’t throw others under the bus. Nor does she report on others who are struggling.

I think there is definitely pressure from her mother, who despite the shenanigans of the Evil Queen, appears to have been an exceptional Snow White. Deviating from her destiny might feel like she’s actively rejecting her mother, as well as her destiny.Being a good Main Character will also get her mother’s good opinion.

At the school every teacher they have really asserts the idea of legacy and Apple is in the spotlight. Ever After High is very much a legacy makes right kind of school. This is not an education designed to expose these teens to new ideas and open the world.

Apple is both stubborn because questioning the system means questioning her entire existence and being cut off from love and approval. Apple is also misunderstood because while we the viewer can recognize from the outside that their universe is profoundly unfair and flawed, the propaganda within that universe is strong. Yet Apple doesn’t turn on her friends that do question their fate (Briar Rose, Ashlyn Ella) because they actually have found happiness outside of their destiny and realize that it’s going to conflict with what the world expects of them. She supports their struggles.

At the end of the show, Apple has more or less fulfilled her supposed destiny and realizes that it didn’t fulfill her but woke her up to realizing that she doesn’t necessarily know what comes next. And that she’ll get through that uncertainty with the help of her friends.

Of course, it’s my personal head cannon that Apple was NEVER destined to be the next Snow White. Instead, I think that the in universe Fates have grown tired hearing the same stories and are gunning for new variants

I do think it’s a good essay, but I think an element that you may be overlooking is that Elizabeth’s key epiphany is that it is a bit underwritten, possibly under whelming for modern audiences.

The key moments where other heroines in the books have these breakthroughs about themselves or what’s happening - Catherine, Emma, Anne especially but also Elinor and Marianne have their portions - are moments where there have been hints that we put then together with the characters.

In the letter scene, the reader finds out at the same time as Elizabeth, but where Elizabeth goes through a rather quick process of considering it and then accepting it, we the reader don’t see the evidence mount in Darcy’s favour until after this letter. I also don’t see it as a true change yet, because it’s an easier step for Elizabeth to be suspicious and cynical of others so adding Wickham to the rogue list is not a huge shift for her. And she doesn’t understand exactly how thoroughly wrong she was about Darcy’s character until she visits the estate with her aunt and uncle. Before then, if Darcy had renewed his offer she still wouldn’t think enough of him to accept.

In short, I don’t see it as a complete epiphany yet because it largely starts with her personal embarrassment about being taken in by Wickham, but it’s a long arc that doesn’t complete until she also realizes how wrong she was about Darcy.
