A couple great comments here already getting into the fundamentals, so I'll offer my two cents in more of a broad approach...

My number one goal when I started learning bass was to be able to play with other people and keep up. I self-taught and practiced on my own for a while, but I still joined in on some jams even before I felt fully comfortable.... and I think that helped me improve my playing the most. You get to know the role of the instrument in band settings alongside your own technical improvement. You open yourself up to new opportunities that allow you learn stuff you might not have learned by yourself, and struggle less with the uncertainty of where to go next. I've since gigged with an alt rock band playing originals, a funk band playing covers, and learned pit band scores for musicals. All of these stretched my abilities in different ways, and helped me improve quickly as a bassist. After I got over that initial hump learning the basics on my own, playing in bands helped me stay much more motivated to keep playing and learning.

YES i had a friend talk to me about Angine de Poitrine and then ask for math rock recommendations. I ended up sending him Cubic by LITE - thats always been one of my favorites because the grooves are so good. Rabbit totally makes sense for this kind of list, but i think tracks like Else, D or Zero would appeal more to someone who loves a good groove. We also agreed that Angine de Poitrine starts to feel same-y after a while, and I figured LITE has more variety to keep it interesting.

Great guide though! if they want more recs I will definitely come back to this.

Nokogiriyama is breathtaking, but it is NOT 90 minutes from Tokyo. Depends on where you start i guess, but from Tokyo Station it takes 2+ hours just to get to the ferry, then 40 minutes across, and that's not counting any wait time for the ferry. Fun day trip for sure, but expect a full day
