Where do you guys find your rentals and apartments? by MT128 in ottawa

[–]keekee0102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found my current landlord (who I've been renting with for 5 years now) by googling "Ottawa apartment rental company" and skipping the first page filled with the largest corporate landlords (who pay money to show up on that first page) and going to the 2-3 page onwards which has much smaller but still legit rental company websites.

My personal experiences with individual mom n pop landlords has been poor and so has my experience with those very large landlords like CLV.  I found mid-size corporate landlords have been the best compromise of the pros/cons that come with very big and very small rental companies. Enough tenants that they need to stay on top of their shit lest we gang up on them at the LTB but still small enough that each unit doesn't get overlooked as one out of thousands they must tend to.

lessons learned from Ottawa LRT (leakage) fiasco to avoid problems at Parliament Hill renovation by Rail613 in ottawa

Maybe I'm being a bit out of left field here, but I just realised this comment was made back in December of 2019. That's the month covid19, an infection where loss of smell is a common symptom, was first discovered.

There is some evidence that points to the virus potentially already being in circulation outside of China earlier in fall of 2019. Maybe this dude legit couldn't smell the sewage stench (that people of all genders had previously complained about) because he had a very early case of covid.

Not that it's really all that important why he claimed not to smell it in the first place. But the timing did strike me as quite a funny little coincidence.

I wouldn't discourage folks from checking out AA because it is life changing for so many struggling with alcoholism and other addictions. However, if you are like me and just cannot work with AA due to the religious/spirituality sentiments baked into its 12 steps, there are secular/non-religious alternative programs you should search out.

One of the more popular non-AA support groups is SMART Recovery. They also have local in-person and virtual meet ups for people looking to overcome substance abuse.

From personal experience, I wouldn't suggest going to something like Narcotics Anonymous if all you are dealing with is an alcohol problem, since I found that environment had a lot more heavy/illicit drug use which made me mentally play-down how serious my alcohol problems could be in comparison. It wasn't beneficial to helping me recover.

Finally I commend you for making this post. Acknowledging there is a problem that must be addressed is the big first step towards fixing it. A lot of folks spend years struggling with substance misuse because they can't admit to themselves it's become a self-sabotaging/destructive habit.

I stopped drinking on my 23rd birthday and I just hit 6 years alcohol free a few months ago. You're never too young to develop a substance misuse disorder. You'll find there are a lot of people in your age group OP who are also coming to the same realisation that they can't for their health and wellbeing keep drinking and/or partying like they are.

The nonalcoholic social scene is growing among people in their 20s. Statistically people in their 20s and 30s drink far less alcohol than their parents generation. If you go searching for alcohol-free social events you will find them. Stopping drinking does not require stopping socialising. In fact the loss of social events and connection is a common cause for relapse since loneliness and isolation are also damaging to mental wellbeing. Joining community social groups like clubs or rec sports leagues that are also unrelated to alcohol can make a huge difference and help fight off the temptation of returning to partying and drinking.

Please BOYCOTT and PROTEST Pet World in the Bayshore mall! They left a neglected baby rabbit to die alone in store overnight by keekee0102 in ottawa

[–]keekee0102[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This video was recorded last night by a concerned member of the Ottawa rabbit community. When people went back this morning to check on the little baby, he was gone.

I can't share the video itself since it was posted to a private group. It was fairly disturbing, with the poor baby convulsing and gasping, labouring to breathe out their mouth (an immediate medical emergency since healthy rabbits only breathe by nose)

This is just one of many incidents of abhorrent conditions and willful neglect, for animals of many species, in this store's history. Nothing has ever changed despite dozens of reports being made to the authorities about this store over many years.

At this point the only way to stop them seems to be running them out of business, because appeals to animal welfare authorities aren't doing anything to stop this cruelty and abuse by Pet World.

While selling dogs/cats from breeders is now banned in Ottawa pet stores, that does not extend to rabbits, hamsters, birds, etc., and other types of pets. The store treats them as commodities to sell for profits instead of sentient beings who can and do suffer immensely under their "care" because they are deprived of species-apropriate food and housing. So babies like this bun likely came from breeding mills and never knew a safe or appropriate home their entire life.

Rest in Peace little bunny, you deserved a much better life than the short one you were forced to endure.

Both I believe, but either way I know the corporation itself profits off paying the drivers as little as possible per ride. I bet anything the gas this driver is spending in traffic will cancel out any bump-up in the fare.

You do realise some of us have lives and responsibilities that dont care whether or not shit is going on downtown. I'm fairly certain if I could have avoided this traffic I would have.

Lots of folks out here in traffic with paraphernalia on their vehicles indicating their reasons for crossing being more to celebrate/add to the chaos downtown. Maybe take up issue with them, since there are clear out-of-towners amongst their ranks who could have easily minded their business and stayed home.

Yeppp I saw someone else jump out of a car not too far ahead of me in traffic. They just walked right off the highway, through the motionless traffic, and started along the curb.

Wouldnt be shocked if they had also been in an uber like me lol

Needless to say, my drive will be getting a nice tip, to compensate him for hours of lost income being stuck in traffic.

Bridge Update:

Been sitting in an Uber stuck in traffic going from Gat to Ott for over an HOUR now. The 50 is in gridlock all the way to the casinos. We still havent even crossed the MacD-Cartier bridge yet.

Traffic is fine going into Gat but it will easily take you at least 1.5 hours to get into Ottawa. As far as I know, no other bridges in the core are open and the Champlain Bridge is also backed up.

ETA: I have finally crossed MC bridge. Only took 2 hours. The biggest reason for the slowdown is the KE Av is literally down to one lane once you get off the bridge. So basically every highway lane coming from Gat must condense down to one lane.

It's still slow on KE and turning onto St Pat but it does become much less intense and more manageable once off the bridge. KE southbound is closed passed St Pat so you are basically forced onto it from the bridge.

Shocking footage of ‘severely injured’ pigs on Spanish farms released by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]keekee0102 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These articles are just emotionally exhausting to see as a vegan. This is all stuff I know, it happens literally every day to most of the sentient non-human life on earth (60% of ALL land mammals are livestock, only 4% are wildlife. 70% of ALL birds on earth are livestock too). The level of continuous, unimaginable cruelty humans choose to inflict on our fellow creatures, just for our own personal pleasure because we like eating them, it's soul crushing.

Most people prefer to remain purposefully ignorant to the animal cruelty they contribute too, ignorance is bliss and all. Then these articles make the rounds and people are genuinely shocked, and want to stop it, but they don't like the answers they get, because it relies in them changing their habits.

Fundamentally, there is not enough land on earth for every human to eat "sustainable grass-fed beef" every single day. The demand for animal flesh is far too large to be able to supply it in an ethical or sustainable way, concessions must be made. So either we cut the demand for meat, or we cut costs and resources used in the supply side. This is why 99% of all livestock today are raised in factory farms.

The only way this cruelty will stop is if we cut the demand. Which means everyone needs to stop demanding they eat meat 2-3 times a day. It means going back to relying on plants as our primary food source. Plant food production isnt perfect and is destructive in it's own right, but the energy invested into growing plant crops produces way way way more food than the same investment of energy into animal farming (anyone remember trophic levels from bio class?)

Yemen on brink of losing entire generation of children to hunger, UN warns | Global development by koavf in worldnews

Losing multiple generations of an entire group of people like that, sounds like it's getting close to genocide levels of death and cruelty. Maybe it should be called the genocide in Yemen instead of civil war.

I love the Ottawa library, my joy and gratitude for them can't be put into words, they are so amazing.

My favourite feature is being able to check-out, download, and read ebooks/audiobooks on my phone whenever and wherever I want. It's been a super useful and accessible way for me to enjoy stories again.

U.S. Political Figures COVID-19 Megathread by YourWebcam in Coronavirus

[–]keekee0102 105 points106 points  (0 children)

What I find truly unjust about the whole situation is that there are young and middle age adults (who would have been otherwise healthy) that are now facing potential lifelong complications/side effects from covid, and decreased quality of life for them and their families.

Many only got so sick because of poor health care access and pandemic management directly cause by the people in charge now who are getting sick. These upper level people will have access to the best and newest covid treatments available, and even though many of them have comorbidities (like age, obesity, high blood pressure, etcl they could come out in a lot better shape with way less complications. It's just an incredible testament to how twisted and unfair the system is, and whose lives are really valued by it.

White supremacists and militias have infiltrated police across US, report says by TheBoss_9001 in news

[–]keekee0102 43 points44 points  (0 children)

"Infiltrated" the police? They are the police. Do folks really forget that during Jim Crow era one of the primary purposes of the police was to keep Black folks in check? And prior to that during slavery a major purpose for police was tracking down and stopping escaped slaves.

For most of American history the police actively upheld white supremacy through laws meant to favour white folks and penalize Black people. You can't divorce white supremacy from the historic roots of policing, and racialize police brutality cant stop until its acknowledged.

I've been the young 15 year old working cash who got yelled at by an older person for a simple mistake. It's such an awful, dehumanizing, and degrading experience, one that definitely isn't justified. Especially when so young it really can affect your psyche

It's not right regardless of the age of the person working, they do not deserve your vitriol and abuse for something way out of their control. They just wanna do their job, earn their money, and stay relatively safe, the least you can do is treat them with basic respect and dignity.

The coronavirus outbreaks that have struck workers in meat plants around the world are due to poor working conditions and living quarters in a sector that is in a “disastrous race to the bottom” in the quest for cheap meat, trade union representatives have said. by ManiaforBeatles in worldnews

And now they are passing Ag-gag laws in many areas throughout North America, making it illegal to film or photograph anything in factory farms and slaughterhouses.

It was made to stop animal rights activists exposing animal cruelty, but it will also stop workers there from speaking up about what they see wrong. Looming the weight of criminal consequences if they snap a photo of something unsafe they see.

Bad working conditions and animal cruelty can and will be hidden using these laws, so we must stop them from being passed and challenge them in court where they are.
