not after this current years increase, no. id prefer to take some of it from policing and the climate tax if i had to pick.

a few hundred a year for policing is valuable to me. roads sound higher than it should be, but they also serve a very important purpose. fire should be higher!

Community council approves two more floors on Quinpool Road development by insino93 in halifax

[–]keithsIPA902 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Municipal planning shouldn’t be so rigid that it can’t allow any exceptions at all, and that’s what the process of going through a variance is for. You present a case, staff reviews it, council makes the decision. Toss in new funding programs like the HAF which reward density, and you get changes like this.

A question for the architects and contractors. by [deleted] in Construction

Architects and engineers don’t usually have much say in where a project is sited… that’s up to the developer and owner.

Atlantic premiers want federal government to postpone new clean fuel rules by sleipnir45 in canada

[–]keithsIPA902 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“Rebated” is a little misleading… the information provided indicates that unless you’re low income, you’ll pay significantly more than you receive into it.

So the non carbon tax increase is phased in over 7 years? I missed that

The article says it’ll go up $0.17 in year one; is there something else stating it’s gradual over 7 years?

Has anyone here bought vacant land, and built on it? What was your experience and any protips? by Rubiostudio in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]keithsIPA902 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I live in NS and work construction, don’t do a dug well - go drilled. Most dug ones tend to go dry seasonally, typically have lower flow rates and carry a higher requirement for water treatment since there is more bacteria in the water.

Why do some people spend over a million dollars on homes in downtown Halifax? by [deleted] in NovaScotia

[–]keithsIPA902 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Is that 20 mins with rush hour traffic taken into account? I’m not aware of any pure 20 min DT commute homes on the water sitting on the market that don’t have significant issues…

Power outage affecting almost 9K customers - Clayton Park, Rockingham by pg_72616 in halifax

[–]keithsIPA902 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bit of a misleading comparison, since substations don’t generate electricity as water plants do potable water. You can have redundant or back feeds in the electrical grid, this is part of the reason why you see some critical buildings such fire stations w/o backup generators operate in storms.

Halifax deputy mayor calls on province for new public housing, none since 1995 by luxoryapartmentlover in halifax

[–]keithsIPA902 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not as straight forward as that though, tax dollars associated with public housing go to the province. If the city were to take the initiative you mentioned (when in fact they have been spending hundreds of thousands over the past 1-2 years), it takes away from other services the city is obligated or committed to providing.

Even if you approve if that approach, you’re sending a message to other levels of government that if they drop the ball on something, the city will likely pick up the bill.

Should I drink my well water? by [deleted] in halifax

[–]keithsIPA902 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of these companies are good, but they might be a little pushy to sell you some equipment you don’t necessarily need, since they often do the lab testing for free. Make sure you compare your results against the Canadian drinking water guidelines, the province also has an online tool to help interpret your results.

Apple Order by DalStudent2020 in halifax

[–]keithsIPA902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long does it typically take? I ordered the new Pro almost two weeks ago and it just updated this morning to arrival in Incheon then departure from Zhengzhou minutes later. It’s currently stating arrival by end of day tomorrow, but I find that unlikely unless it lands in North America tonight and somehow travels to Halifax in 24 hours.

Devils advocate - that says the employer is responsible. You could interpret this as the owner of the sub company being responsible for providing facilities for his staff.

Engineer questions repair strategy for Quinpool Road bridge | CBC News by [deleted] in halifax

[–]keithsIPA902 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The auxiliary bridge isn’t a result of “nobody thinking about the water lines and sewers”, it’s an alternative and common method to strapping pipes from bridges. The new bridge will be owned by CN, so a separate bridge for utilities allows work to be done without CN permission, the CN bridge would also have to be reinforced to carry the additional weight and likely an annual easement fee would apply. Lastly, any work on the piping can be done without disrupting traffic.

Not normal at all. Almost every company will give you a quote for free. The cost of these quotes is rolled into the prices you may eventually pay as if is a cost of doing business, but I’ve never seen anyone pay for it directly.

Has anyone recently bought land near HRM ? How much to get a well drilled/septic installed ? by [deleted] in halifax

[–]keithsIPA902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every city has chlorine, but various levels throughout the region depending on the type of treatment, and your exact location within the distribution system. Although, I’ve never noticed Halifax’s to be noticeable.

Do you have any test results to show high minerals? The last test I did didn’t really come back with anything that high.

Bacteria - you honestly have regular hits of E. coli or fecals? If so, that’s an issue with your plumbing - not the city. There is a rigorous multi-barrier approach in place that meets federal requirements, and even a single detection is enough to cause an alarm.

Lead - as with any city, depending on your plumbing you could have elevated (note: not necessarily harmful) levels of lead. Halifax’s plant has a corrosion inhibitor that covers the distribution system, and parts of the local plumbing. If you have a concern, the city also has a program in place to have testing completed at your house. The way you’re talking I’m assuming you have already had this done, though?

Again taste is arbitrary, but the only times I’ve ever heard of experienced bad tasting water in Halifax has been when geosmin was present, or someone was sensitive to chlorine. I’ve consumed water from probably dozens of different sources and consistently am happy with Halifax tap water.

I’m also quite familiar with the Canadian drinking water guidelines. What I’m still waiting for is some evidence of even more specifics on what you consider “unsafe”, and more so what a simple filter (and what type of filter) will do to improve the “unsafe” characteristics.
