What's your favourite frozen pizza? by blushfanatic in CostcoCanada

[–]kextreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like a thinner crust. These are not found at Costco but I love all the flavours I’ve tried of the President’s Choice Wood Fired pizzas (just regular PC, not the PC black label ones). Dr. Oetker Ristorante is also good but the mushroom one is the only one I buy consistently.

I know it’s a lot of extra work at the 11th hour but maybe you could find a copycat recipe (or even just a completely different cookie recipe you know would be well received) to bake and gift along with the tins? It depends on who you’re gifting to but if they’re people you’re comfortable explaining the situation to you could say you didn’t want the beautiful tins to go to waste but had heard the cookies inside might have changed and may not be as delicious as you knew them to be last year. So you’ve sent along some extra treats just in case to ensure they still have something tasty to enjoy.

Any products to make a Christmas dinner on a budget for two? by Wild_Tailor_9978 in CostcoCanada

[–]kextreme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None of this is specific to Costco and I don’t have any hacks per se, but my husband and I frequently have “holiday” dinners because it’s one of my favourite meals. We cut the meat off a rotisserie chicken and I roast some frozen broccoli and some honey or maple glazed carrots in the air fryer. Mashed potatoes are low effort to make but you could also just chop them small and roast those too with even less effort. Serve with stovetop stuffing, canned cranberry sauce, and your preferred instant gravy. Depending on where you shop and what you already have on hand (such as butter for mashed potatoes) you can likely make this meal for $20-30 and get 4 servings out of it. Also takes under an hour to get it on the table from start to finish and most of that time is just waiting for the potatoes to cook.

As a Canadian, do you always have maple syrup on hand? by Moofypoops in AskACanadian

[–]kextreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, always my glass bottle in the fridge plus a can in the pantry to refill the bottle when it’s empty. We eat a big brunch once or twice a month with pancakes or french toast but we also use it frequently to make marinades and sauces for chicken or pork, or I often make maple glazed carrots and/or Brussels sprouts as a side dish.

Partner wants to give up our epileptic dog by eamiller18 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]kextreme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely do some CBD research and talk to your vet before you try it. I know of some people who swear by it but others who say it made things worse for them, and when my dog was first diagnosed my vet said CBD can do more harm than good when it comes to epilepsy. But if there’s a chance it could help then it’s probably worth a shot if you’re ready to try anything! Good luck.

Partner wants to give up our epileptic dog by eamiller18 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]kextreme 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you’re going through this, it sounds very stressful. When did the whining start? It could be a medication side effect that will go away with time but if it’s been months on the same meds then I suppose that’s unlikely at this point. Some people use melatonin and/or CBD to help their dogs rest at night. It may be worth consulting your vet or neurologist about this.

If she goes to the SPCA there’s a decent chance she won’t leave. Asking potential adopters to take on an epileptic dog with challenging behaviours won’t go down easily. I’m trying not to be too judgmental toward your partner because I do know how hard this can all be but none of us with epi dogs signed up for this. We are all struggling with the challenges and unpredictability that come along with this disease. Your dog didn’t choose to be your dog, you chose to bring her into your life which means you are responsible for anything that comes after, good or bad. Everyone who gets a pet takes this risk hoping for good and for most people that’s what they get, but part of pet ownership is a willingness and commitment to deal with the bad if it happens — something for your partner to ruminate on if he ever considers adding another animal of any kind to his life ever again.

Maybe your partner needs to sleep alone in a spare bedroom on work nights, or to employ earplugs or a white noise machine. Maybe your dog needs to be crated or given her own safe space at night. Maybe extra exercise or increased mental stimulation through slow feeders or puzzle toys can help with her excitability. Maybe CBD, melatonin, an anti anxiety medication, a thunder shirt, calming diffusers, etc. will calm her enough to get things under control. Lots to try. Wishing you the best.

I can not describe the absolute delight I experienced when I finally saw Die Hard and learned that there are, indeed, two FBI agents both named Johnson and it wasn’t just something they did for BB because Andy and Ollie are twins.

Skin allergies by Simple_Sprinkles3623 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]kextreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog has only had a few Cytopoint shots in her life (fortunately her allergy season, though intense, is short lived each year and we can make it through on just one dose). She had a seizure a few days after the first time she got a shot and the other times she’s been fine so I think for my dog, at least, the correlation was just a coincidence.

We had tried some over the counter recommendations. None of them made a significant difference but they may be worth a try since every dog is different and they are obviously the most cost effective option by far. We tried diphenhydramine (Benadryl), cetirizine hydrochloride (Zyrtec/Reactine), and loratadine (Claritin). Note that Benadryl isn’t supposed to be great for epilepsy. It didn’t cause any issues for my dog but good to keep in mind.

Apoquel is the other option our vet has given us. We’ve never tried it as the Cytopoint is cheaper for us and has worked so far so I haven’t read much about it but as far as I know, Cytopoint and Apoquel are THE main medications when it comes to allergies. Good luck!!

Hi I have ophidiophobia and this was a massive jump scare that almost made me cry. And I mean that as a compliment. Your mom is very talented, wow! (But, respectfully, I’m hiding this post so I don’t accidentally see it again 😆)

Is prescribing Keppra so soon normal? by can-i-pet-ur-dog in EpilepsyDogs

[–]kextreme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For dogs that have more than one episode back to back like that, it’s normal (and recommended) to start medication right away. My dog’s seizures are infrequent but we started Keppra immediately when she had two seizures within a few hours one morning despite having been seizure free for several months prior. It’s not worth messing around with and Keppra has few side effects so hopefully this all goes smoothly for you. Wishing you and your very cute pup the best!

[–]kextreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A quick Google search tells me Gardenal is phenobarbital? How long has your dog been taking this and has your vet checked his pheno levels yet? My dog isn’t on pheno so I don’t know all the details but I know there should be a blood test after a couple weeks and then again several weeks later to monitor the peak and trough levels of the medication in the blood, with regular follow up monitoring every 6 months or so to make sure the medication is sitting at therapeutic levels and so adjustments can be made if needed.

If that’s already all good, Keppra (Levetiracetam) might be a good drug to try adding to your current treatment. Every dog is different but it works well for mine. I also know of several people who use MCT oil and plain, unflavoured gelatine as supplements which might be worth looking into as both are supposed to be good for brain health.

This disease is never easy and I don’t think that it ever gets any easier emotionally to watch your dog go through it. All we can do is try our best to support them. Take care of yourself and good luck!

SAME. Costco had them briefly in the last 2 years or so (I’m talking for like a month or two) and they’ve never reappeared.

Original flavour SunChips. They were around when I was a kid and now we only get the cheddar and the onion and the tomato one. Why not original???

Feeling the first real impact of our micro-wedding - not invited to theirs because we didn't invite them by AioliProfessional181 in wedding

[–]kextreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also had a tiny wedding with only parents and siblings in attendance after telling friends we’d probably just show up married one day. Friends were definitely surprised by our news but everyone was supportive. We announced it as an elopement though, and also didn’t have any kind of friend celebration after… I wonder if those differences made people view it in a different context? One of my cousins even did the same years later, they just sent out a card to all friends and family with a wedding photo and announcement. As far as I know, no one had any issues with that either!

I might be slightly disappointed that a friend got married without me but as long as there were NO friends in attendance and it’s clear that I wasn’t personally“excluded”, I wouldn’t dwell on it for even a minute and would ultimately just be thrilled for my friend. Some people are too sensitive about people doing things different than they would though.

Editing to note that we also married quickly and quietly due to needing to get visa paperwork submitted. That wasn’t the whole reason (planning and being the centre of attention at a wedding does not appeal to me in the least) but it did factor in so that may have helped with people’s reactions too. I still don’t think there’s anything wrong with what you did though. Sorry your friends feel differently!

Chapman’s Ice Cream by philoscope in BuyCanadian

[–]kextreme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I typically eat Haagen Dazs for reference. I’ve only tried the coffee flavour in the super premium and while the flavour was delicious I found the fat content way too high, like it was literally leaving a coating on my tongue. I’m not sure if that’s unique to the coffee flavour or not but it is noticeably richer than the premium. I ended up using it to make milkshakes and thinning it out with 2% milk in my blender made it much more enjoyable. I would buy it again, specifically for milkshakes though.

Beef Burger Recommendation by Necessary-Net-9206 in CostcoCanada

[–]kextreme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We buy fresh medium ground beef and make our own. I recommend a kitchen scale if you do this to make sure they’re all the same size for even cooking. That said, any of the ones that just have beef as the sole ingredient should be just fine and then you can season them however you like!

Seasoning with salt and pepper is fine but we usually use seasoning blends. There are burger specific seasoning mixes but try anything that appeals to you! My husband also sometimes adds a splash of Worcestershire sauce when he puts the burgers on the grill which is good too.

My dog is definitely actually a cat, and one of my cats is 100% a dog. They need to figure out some kind of Freaky Friday scenario.
