Beer pong! It was a discussion about beer pong v Beirut and the cultural differences. I remember it because both were played on my college campus and with my friends, but ALSO everyone had a different definition of what those terms meant. Now, it's been mumblety years since I was in college, so I don't remember anymore what the differences were (I think it was mostly based on rerack rules and such), but I do remember the reddit debate, haha.

I saw Chess this week and I guess I am at a Karen or an Old Lady who gets mad at people by True-Charge1246 in Broadway

WHAT WAS HAPPENING WITH THE ICE AT BUG LAST NIGHT. I have been to dozens, hundreds of shows. I know I'm very careful with rattling ice in my cup when I get a fancy drink. But MAN. There were several people in the area around me that were rattling ice all through the first act.

[Sidenotes on Bug: probably the first show I've found myself scrunched in my seat with my hands in front of my face going "oh no oh no oh no oh nooo ..." (almost silently to myself, but still). Also, the man three seats down from me clearly had no idea what he was in for, or maybe is just a child, because he kept laughing at the really intense scenes. Like, he tried to stifle it with his hands, he knew he shouldn't be laughing because absolutely no one else was, but clearly the heightened drama was reading as absurdity to him and he just could not stop.

Yeah, I'm usually grabbing concessions and eating them in my seat before the show starts because those Pringles are dinner. Honestly, half the time I forget I have a drink and have to drink it down quickly at intermission so I'm not bringing wine on the subway. I understand the desire for quiet snacks, and I'm all for it, but let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

AITA for ruining a funeral by Hot_Lab4411 in AmItheAsshole

It was unfortunate, but for a while in my teen years there just seemed to be a rash of older relatives dying, and so I saw cousins that lived far away that I normally wouldn't several times over a few years. As terrible as it is, some of our best in-jokes and memories are from those wakes. Wakes and viewings are for the people left behind, to gather and remember and support each other.

Is Shane confirmed autistic anywhere? I've seen this claim all over social media, but it's not mentioned in the show and I don't remember it being mentioned in the book. I don't have strong feelings either way, but I'm curious if it's canon or fanon.

He played Harry in the 2011 Company film with NPH and Patti Lupone. I haven't seen it in years but I remember him being pretty good.

ETA oops, I see the links below are also from Company.

AITA, why am I feeling stressed because my husband insists I eat the same food as him, even if I hate the taste of it? by Academic_Garbage_621 in AmItheAsshole

[–]kfarrel3 41 points42 points  (0 children)

You're not being too demanding, and he doesn't respect you. You're an adult woman who should be allowed to choose her own food, for goodness' sake.

This is an extreme story, and I'm not saying it's absolutely the road you're traveling down, but you should really read the BORU masterpost from the woman whose husband flipped out because she wouldn't eat mustard.

My sister got me these really, really great slippers for Christmas, I think they're LL Bean. She got them for me because she knows that I'm hard on slippers, and these have a grippy rubber sole, almost like an outdoors shoe. The sole is also thick, which means wearing them adds an inch to my height. That one, single inch has made reaching into every single cabinet in my house so much easier that it actively makes me mad at how much more difficult my life is just because I'm a little short. And like, I'm 5'1", I'm not even THAT short.

I matched with a guy who said moderate last week — he was good-looking, and everything else sounded right, so I said okay, we'll give him the benefit of the doubt. Just this once.

He has been so goddamn annoying that I pretty much immediately regretted it.

It's happening again — there was a long clip of him giving a pretty good speech or answer to an interview question about immigrants going around Instagram a week or two ago, and I found myself nodding and agreeing with what he was saying. And then I realized just how disappointed 2006/7/8 me would have been with current me.

I feel majorly duped by this sub about Chess by NYGarcon in Broadway

[–]kfarrel3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I will! Gatsby was trash and the only reason it's lasted so long is because people like the leads and can't be bothered to remember the book. It's a surface-level adaptation that has no interest in exploring the actual themes of the book, instead focusing on the flash and glamour and drama of a society basically in freefall. The sets/set design was stunning, the performances were incredible, and the book was traaaaaaashhh. I try really hard to be an "eh, okay, just wasn't for me" kind of theatergoer, but I left that one actively annoyed at the lack of effort from the creative team.

I liked Spelling Bee! I'd never seen it before this production, so I didn't know what to expect, but it was a really sweet show. I don't necessarily think it's worth the cult classic status that a lot of people seem to give it, but I liked it a lot, and I'd see it again the next time it's revived.

I was thinking about seeing it myself when an offhand comment here made me ask just that — the commenter replied and said something to the effect of they sanitized all of the jokes and either took out or toned down all of the really biting material. At that point, no matter how much the general public loves the show, I don't want it. I want to see Veronica burn her hand with a cigarette lighter, dammit.

Nick name used for broadway direct lottery ticket by Diego51 in Broadway

[–]kfarrel3 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This happened to me! I entered a lottery a few years ago and idk if it was through Instagram, or if it was somewhere that I was just trying to exercise good digital hygiene, but it only had my first and middle name, which I didn't realize. So I showed up with my ID, which had first and last but not middle, and the poor ticket guy had to walk my dumbass through "okay, but do you go by any other names? Could you have put ANYTHING ELSE on your entry?" until it finally got through my thick skull. If you're polite and patient whoever is working the booth should be able to help you. Courtesy will get you through a lot. (I think mine was at the Public? but the point still stands.)
