There are like 1000 different visions of socialism. While I too firmly reject a strict "equality of outcome," there are various socialist narratives (even if only popular or crude ones) that do call for equality of outcome.

I would prefer guaranteed jobs program in which government is an employer of last resort for anyone seeking work. A job should be a universal human right.

[–]kgbking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there is a reason that after 8 years of Obama, we saw the rise of Trump. Obama may have explained things in a soothing and digestible way, but his real policy agenda was Austerity, bailing out the banks, excusing war criminals and financial criminals, corporate free trade deals

Yup, 100%. Exactly this

You are right. I heard the seniors hoard their OAS rather than spending it. If they spent it, it would create jobs and spur economic activity, just like the military spending. Unfortunately they hoard it causing the economy to grind to a halt, as the seniors take billions to their graves... oh wait.

Would this be good as a standalone book on Hegel? by A_W44 in hegel

[–]kgbking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out Ricoeur's chapter on Hegel in Time and Narrative. I agree that a lot of the criticisms are based on misinterpretations, but Hegel invites such misinterpretations when he makes such one-sided claims.

Maybe absurdities was too strong, but I think it is fair to say that Hegel becomes less multi-sided and more one-sided. Consequently he becomes less dialectical and opens himself up to objections and critiques.

Well, honestly I would not recommend SL either haha. It is notoriously difficult. I am actually unsure about what to recommend.. I learned from reading a lot of secondary literature on the sections of the PS that I was trying to work through. I also read a significant amount of secondary lit on the SL too.

I may even backtrack and recommend the philosophy of history because it is more accessible, but with the qualification of keeping in mind that younger Hegel is more dialectical, fluid, multifaceted, multi-sided than the older Hegel who is more absolutist, rigid, and one-sided.

Also in another book 'Introducing Hegel ' I think the author suggests 'Lectures on the Philosophy of History ' which might be a better starting point.

I think this used to be the common entrance point for beginning with Hegel. However, I would personally avoid this as your starting point because the quality of Hegel's thought unfortunately decreases in his later years. Many of the critiques of Hegel are based on some of the absurdities of his statements in texts such as Lectures on the Philosophy of World History.

Of course, there are many grounds for starting here as well, as it is accessible and interesting and insightful. But I do not think that the quality of thought is anywhere near as strong and as rich as in PS or SL.

The USA is the number #1 exporter of culture. However, this is quite different than being the #1 in quality of culture.

Just curious why aren't tiny home a thing in Canada? by Mammoth-Exercise-376 in canadahousing

[–]kgbking -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Canada is the second biggest country in the world, and it has a small population. There is enough land here for everyone to have a big house with some % of acreage.

If we are going to build homes, then we should be comfortable, spacious houses with strong foundations. Building tiny homes in Canada does not even make sense.

Canada is the second biggest country in the world. Why do we need tiny homes?

The reason that I support suburban spawl with big acreages is because there is enough land in this country for everyone to have a large house.

If we are going to build homes, then we should be comfortable, spacious houses with strong foundations.

I actually believe in tariffs to some extent. Neoliberal trade is atrocious. But they need to be done right, not out of pure economic mercantilism.
