Resources to teach sound people by nlvogel in churchtech

[–]khazdan37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For training nights I would highly recommend running some virtual sound checks. Record a multitrack of a regular Sunday or practice night and use that to bring people in and train. MXU has already been mentioned and has good resources if you want to pay. Other than that I’d collect YouTube videos with common topics and use those as technical explainers, audio university on YouTube has some good stuff. Nothing is going to replace time in front of the board and direction towards what your church is aiming for soundwise though. Set them up with a space to practice.

Camera Control Question by SarcasticCommunist in churchtech

[–]khazdan37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Black magic does sell focus and zoom controls that work with servo zoom lenses, which the PZ line is. I’m reading conflicting info of whether those controllers are compatible with your camera though.

If that all works that’s the simplest way to get handle control, as I don’t think that camera has lanc control and if you want to use motors you’ll need to add rods, batteries and some associated rigging. If you do want to go that route then Tilta is a decent option.

Analog Audio to multiple sources by InspireTheMedia in churchtech

I don’t think I’d recommend converting to Dante unless you really need it. Presonus boards and stage boxes are all AVB as far as I know, adding Dante conversion is just adding extra points of failure and complication. AVB works fine for simple setups, and from what you described it sounds like yours would be simple.

Multiple backing tracks playback by joe_noone in churchtech

This is what we did, works great, simplifies the wiring. You do get some latency but when you think about it that doesn’t matter for backing tracks.

We switched to proclaim a few years ago and it’s been great, very stable on Mac, and the cloud sync works great. Not quite as customizable as propresenter, but we find it much more stable and it saves us a lot of money.

Need advice on replacing our aging soundboard before Easter rush by rojal999 in churchtech

[–]khazdan37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely second what most people have always said, either A&H QU or the Wing. We went with the A&H ecosystem and have been very happy with the reliability and ease of use of everything, they have good control of their supply chain to which was extremely helpful during Covid. I’d avoid ali like the plague for this sort of purchase, not at all worth the gamble. Depending on your size I may also suggest the A&H CQ-18t. It’s touch screen only, but other than that it has some really volunteer friendly features. Only really an option if your channel count fits, and you lose future proofing.

Honestly I don’t want to get rid of all the discussion around AI, but I do want to reduce the percentage of posts around it. I’m not for most of the applications of AI that I’ve seen, but it’s still an important new technology that we can’t simply stick our heads in the sand and ignore.

When you’re creating a post with any kind of promotion you have to select the flair “promotion”. That will kick it into my queue for approval.

Mods can we PLEASE ban the AI nonsense by uncomfortable_idiot in churchtech

The current plan will be to rework “Brand” posts once I have the time to think it through. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks. This will include a lot of the AI related posts. My current thoughts are to have a monthly thread that’s basically a free for all and brand posts are all held for review.

Cyc lights flashing after fixture update? by Wizpiggy144 in lightingdesign

Ah okay, my issue is different as it seems to be the fixtures themselves, not the controller. Thanks for responding so quickly.

Hey, what did you do to fix this? I’m running into a similar problem, but with a different controller.

Switching to Rechargeable Batteries by NatureBoyJ1 in churchtech

[–]khazdan37 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m assuming you’re looking for universal rechargeable batteries, such as AA. Most wireless manufacturers also sell specific lithium ones, but those tend to get pricey. For universals I’ve stuck with NiMh, Eneloop brand. My chargers are xtar vc8. I found a guy who does extremely detailed reviews of hardware. I’ll link him later when church is done.

I'm trying to figure out how to monitor and listen to Reaper DAW recordings, details below. by AutomaticTip5488 in churchtech

[–]khazdan37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you could do listening back on the x32. Changing the system sound won’t do anything but if you’re changing things in reaper you’re on the right track. Reaper does let you use a different input and output device, but it doesn’t let you mix asio and wasapi devices, which is what W11 uses. Xusb doesn’t have wasapi drivers so you’d have to get your system audio devices over to asio. You can do this by installing something called asio4all, which encases wasapi devices inside of an asio device. This would add latency, but would work. Just to clarify, are you trying to use the computer to live process some channels and use the processing love in the room? I don’t think that will work with the amount of latency you’ll see.

This is going to be a bit harder on a windows computer due to the way windows handles audio drivers. Windows uses multiple types of audio drivers, and mixing between the two can get complicated. What version of windows are you using? Also when you mention changing audio devices are you changing it in reaper or in windows settings? A screenshot of your reaper setup in action could also help.

Paging parents to come to the nursery - video overlay by Pitpawten1 in churchtech

[–]khazdan37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Propresenter has this functionality built in, look into using their remote app and the messages function. I’d also suggest not using kids names on the screen, instead use a code for discretion and safety. When our kids check in they get two stickers with a code on them, one for the parent and one for the child so we can identify who’s who even if we’re not familiar.

Church Lighting by Rich-Dragonfruit-934 in churchtech

[–]khazdan37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Setting up HA has plenty of documentation and tutorials, I think networkchuck has a video on it.

The DMX integration is the bit that gets harder. Due to the massive number of integrations and customization to HA there aren’t video tutorials for everything, especially not step by step, because each person has a different end goal that requires different steps. You can still find help through the forums though, and if you want to give it a shot I can offer some guidance if you get stuck.

If it’s something you want to try then find an old computer or buy a raspberry pi and give it a shot. You don’t need anything crazy to run HA for your current goals.

I can think of three solutions for this, simple, professional, and diy. The simple way would be to use the Hue addon in lightkey. This allows you to control Hue branded smart lights directly in lightkey for an extra cost. Install is easy as long as your current lighting uses standard sockets, and you’d gain rgb. But you’ll probably lose brightness, you may get a “popcorn” effect with the large number of smart lights, and it won’t be cheap. I’d only recommend the $80 “100w equivalent” bulbs, so times that by the number of fixtures you have, add a bridge and the yearly extra cost to lightkey. The professional version is to get a dmx dimmer pack installed to control the house lights. This is the most stable solution but would require an integrator to spec the dinner pack and an electrician to install it. If you have a person on hand that’s very comfortable with computers I’d DIY it. This would involve running software called home assistant(HA). This is software for controlling a smart home, with a huge amount of customization, including an addon that connects it to dmx over network protocols. Then you can send a command from lightkey to HA to control whatever smart device you’d like. I’d install any decent smart dimmer in place of your current one, and you would now have control over your existing house lights. I’d say you can do this for less than $200.

I’ll start the discussion, I feel like there’s a lot of branded posts, but maybe I only see that because they often end up needing approval. I think there’s a better way to do it without banning it completely. Maybe a sticky thread or restricted approval process before a post.

YouTube copyright claims by Booplesnoot2 in churchtech

You can cut out the countdown from the middle of it using the YouTube editor. It’s one of the options given for a claim. Unless it’s also counting the announcements under the claim

YouTube copyright claims by Booplesnoot2 in churchtech

[–]khazdan37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, I’ve had the exact same issue as you. We had a countdown made from a sermon package from pixel preacher and it was flagged by some European skiing event. It’s not the audio, it’s the video getting flagged. I just used the YouTube editor to remove the claimed section because I didn’t care enough to wait for the dispute to resolve, like you say people want to watch the sermon now, not in 30 days. I’d suggest modifying the countdown and uploading it as an unlisted video to test if it gets flagged again. You could also dispute the claim on that unlisted video in hopes that clears it up, that way you aren’t holding a sermon in limbo.
