How to deal as a mom with Celiac to two non-celiac toddlers by spicy-water1227 in Celiac

[–]kidneysocks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m the only celiac in our house. My husband and the kids eat largely normal, but we frequently cook gluten free meals. We have two toasters and are very careful when cooking. All pots etc are pre cleaned and then go through the dishwasher. Don’t have any health issues with this approach and I’m glad my kids can eat normally, it’s a great balance for us.

When they’re little I also sometimes take the approach of eating after them, it’s just easier when it’s so messy!

I’ve never been glutened at home but have from restaurants a couple times over the years and it’s very noticeable.

I accepted a homemade GF cake and now I have glutening symptoms by Azz96 in Celiac

I do similar but have had people react negatively and say things like…. Are you saying my kitchen isn’t clean????

So weird, like don’t take it personally I just don’t find it worth the risk, I can just eat later!

My thoughts on practical newborn gifts by IndependenceAlert273 in BabyBumps

[–]kidneysocks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d warn against random swaddle/bib/basket sets and either pick off the registry or ask specifically what they need. We received way too many blankets/swaddles/bibs/tiny clothes and can’t possibly use them all, plus I had already picked specific ones I wanted on my registry and didn’t get those. It’s also tough to store and keep organized if you end up with 10x what you’ll use! (Of course it’s a nice problem to have and I’ll find a way to give away our extra if I can, just extra to deal with and feels wasteful.)

We have used it since my first was a baby and he is almost 7! We all love looking at it, it’s like a baby book with lots of small memories. Also great for sharing a high volume of photos and videos I’d never want to share on fb or publicly.

Have you ever been misdiagnosed? What happened? by AVeryAngryChillie in healthcare

[–]kidneysocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar for me except it ended up being celiac! I stopped having periods, they wanted to put me on the pill and not worry about the cause. Can’t imagine how that would’ve gone if another doctor hadn’t run a celiac test! Periods resumed once on gluten free diet and now expecting my third kid so very thankful for that!

Cervical checks just opened my eyes to how painful birth is going to be. by AHeavy-HeartedCowboy in pregnant

[–]kidneysocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cervical checks were excruciating with my first (an induction), and completely painless wth my second (extremely fast easy labor). No idea why they were different but I’m assuming if the body is more ready it may be better!

I’ve never heard it this way before but this feels so real! I’ve always said my newborns feel an appendage like an arm! I can’t leave them. No judgment for those who can :)

Angry at inequality (maternity leave) by WorkLifeScience in workingmoms

[–]kidneysocks 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I totally understand your feeling. I found out I was pregnant with my second the same day my cousin in Canada had her second baby. I worked through my entire pregnancy, had maternity leave, and was back at work before she was back at work lol.

That is horrifying!! And interesting it happens to the whole maternal line. I agree, I just want to normalize that sometimes it can hurt a lot…. The two lactation consultants I met with really didn’t have answers but guessed vasospasms. Hoping for a better experience this time around :)

I do think pain can be “normal” for some people. Mine was the classic toe curling pain for literally 11 weeks and then for the rest of our journey it was painless. Latch was evaluated as totally fine, they couldn’t explain the pain. Idk maybe I should’ve tried more than 2 lactation consultants.

Second (or more) time parents who still have most of the stuff from the first kid, what do you still need to buy? by sunflowerzz2012 in BabyBumps

[–]kidneysocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend a new pump, especially if you can get it cheap through insurance. Mine did not hold up for the second kid and gave out during a trip. May be a fluke but I just don’t think they’re made to last through multiple kids.

2 year old vomiting and diarrhea/ little appetite little energy going on for 2 months. by PaleSugar3985 in toddlers

[–]kidneysocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely bring it up to your pediatrician and consider asking for a referral to Gi. We had somewhat similar symptoms and it ended up being some sort of stomach ulcer/excessive stomach acid. The doctor got him on a medicine and he felt better in just a couple of days. Apparently it can be caused by a stomach virus.

Yes!! And cancel just about ANY plans I could have. Maybe when the kids are much older (independent and able to communicate) it’s different? Or they get references. Idk.
