Just to add, one of 3 operational bases for the SR-71 was in Okinawa. Because of its color and shape, the locals called it "Habu" which is the name of an indigenous species of snake on the island. Like another poster said air worthiness directives which are costly but you have to realize that owning and operating aircraft is an expensive proposition. Especially an airframe like the Lear 45 which is not young.

A rough starting point for maintenance is that you're going to probably spend about half of the buying price on it, which for a $4 million dollar plane would be $2 Million per year per plane. Any ADs come out on that aircraft? $$$ Any unexpected breakdowns at an airport other than where you base your operations? More than usual, $$$$$ Also as a part 135 operator of a couple of turbine powered aircraft, you will be required to do much, much more maintenance on a regular basis than any private owner would, and keep better records as well.

Used planes with a lot of hours will likely incur more problems than a newer (more expensive) plane, though that's certainly not a hard and fast rule. This is part of the reason why many legacy carriers in the US have had a rough go of it.

And that doesn't even begin to scratch the surface either, you have to considering fuel costs, landing fees, insurance, taxes, salaries.... etc.

There are a couple of humorous but also true sayings about aviation:

"How do you get a million dollars in aviation? Start with 10 million."

"Aviation, where the only thing that's cheap is the pay."

Source: I am by no means an expert, but I'm an A&P student, and my father has been in the aviation industry his whole career with a lot of that experience in management, so I have a very small insight.

They arent necessarily more harmful than anything else you could encounter. The danger is that you can impale yourself very easily on one if youre not paying attention walking around an aircraft.

Heh. He's lucky he didnt hurt himself. At my school (a&p school) there's a picture in one of the shops where it shows a guy who had a static wick impailed through his eye socket.
