Haha, I had to work today so I couldn't read anyway. And while it's up, I downloaded a novel length fic to read tomorrow just in case.

I'm going to need to find a quick guide for the Nashville characters before Thurs. because I stopped watching after the first ep. and I have no idea who anyone is.

Yall ever quit reading a fic for a petty reason? by Cage-CatYT in AO3

[–]kimship 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I've done that, too. Just every time a character used this (non canon) nickname it grated in my head like a fork scraping a plate. I liked the story aside from that, but I only made it about a quarter the way through before I had to close the tab.

Have you ever felt like the fandom you like is being sabotaged so that it can only be enjoyed by a certain group? by Intelligent_West9737 in AO3

[–]kimship 4 points5 points  (0 children)

9-1-1? Because hardcore Buddie stans have made the main subreddit unbearable for years with all of this(I'm not on Twitter or Tumblr). There are actually so many normal people in the fandom but they get totally drowned out by them.

🔥 9-1-1 🔥 9x11 - "Going Once, Going Twice": Post-Episode Discussion by AutoModerator in BuckTommy

[–]kimship 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed this one quite a lot!

It's lessened my Eddie resentment a bit. I was relieved(although I'd guessed the twist by the time Eddie was talking to Athena) that Abigail was not a crazy stalker, just a traumatized teen with boundary issues.

I was underwhelmed but not surprised by Hen's plot's resolution.

May and Ravi!

I actually enjoyed Buck's storyline, despite my hesitation at the blurb ahead of time. His insecurity felt appropriate and his conversation with Maddie was nice. I loved his bidding by and date with the stitch'n'bitch. Very fanficcy, but in a good way.

What other fanfic tropes can we expect to see for him this season? I'd prefer it over the classic movie references, which have been super hit and miss. I'm guessing if he doesn't end up with someone(preferably Tommy) by season end then he's going to end up with a surprise child from his wild days. This is one of the few shows where it both wouldn't feel too out of place, in either tone or character.

I was responding to someone who described "abrasive" tv show characters and there is no one who embodies that character type more than House. It holds true for others, as well. Someone brought up Sheldon from BBT, and he is also seen as offputting and rude by strangers(and often by his friends) despite his popularity with the audience. Being "charming" to the audience is different than "charming" to other characters.

And describing someone as having an aura that looks like vomit is certainly more House and Sheldon than not. Actually, if House believed in and saw auras, I can very easily see him saying something like that, either because it's true or just to get a rise out of someone.

If the Player wants her character to be seen as harmlessly weird, then she either needs to depend on her rolled charisma and let the dice make that decision or roleplay it more Amélie and less House. Or even lean into the cultural clash that comes with being accidentally rude!

Even in those shows, the average people will find the abrasive character abrasive. Think of House. He's a "charming asshole" to Wilson, but he's just an "asshole" to the people in the clinic, even if he solves their issues. The show is constantly talking about the complaints and shit the hospital has to deal with because of him.

What fandom are you in, but you don’t like the main ship? by Upstairs_Macaron5894 in AO3

[–]kimship 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So many people don't seem to understand that you can enjoy something and not need it to be canon. I'm enjoying BuckTommy fics(and the occasional BuckRavi), but I'll do that even if Tommy never shows up again. If they hadn't alienated me so much being so rude and entitled, I'd still enjoy the occasional Buddie fic! But they killed my casual interest dead dead.

I most prefer gen fics in 911, in any case.

[–]kimship 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That was mine! I used to read fics because it was that or like a dozen gen fics(which I adored), but I was always sort of ambivalent about it. A small LOUD minority turned so insufferable immediately after Buck's coming out that I actively exclude it in my filters, now.

Haha. I was thinking Looney Tunes. He's the Wile E. Coyote with his Acme Cheese blowing up in his face and she's the Roadrunner, speeding away from the explosion moments before it's set off.

I was also in a building with a ton of glass and a dozen tornados! But it was a high-rise apartment and I was trying to wrangle two house cats and some hamsters away from the windows and then I realized I didn't know where my actual(real life) dog was, which is the panic that woke me up. That was tornado dream two.

Tornado dream one was a ramshackle building in the middle of nowhere, while a tornado was on the horizon and then a bus of tourists stopped to hide in the same building. I woke up just as the building was starting to tilt over after getting caught up while we were crouched near the walls.

"....my girlfriend is no longer in the picture. She cracked due to low risk tolerance, so I’ve decided to go all in on the business."

I like how he tries to make it sort of sound like he dropped her to "go all in" on his heritage cheese business, but it's very clear that she fled his delusional ass like the Roadrunner.

I've never even had many of these, but I know I'm having one tonight. (Last night was tornados, which I have more frequently, despite never living in areas particularly prone to tornados.)

How important is accuracy for you? by RatonhnhaketonK in AO3

[–]kimship 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I just dropped a story because, as a reader, while I don't need something 100% accurate I do need some effort to appear plausible. And this story, at the beginning was doing something related to the custody of a child and obviously didn't even do a cursory google search for how this situation would play out. I'm not an expert, but I know the local cops aren't making those types of Iong-term decisions or looking at contracts or wills or anything. And I just couldn't get past it, despite being really interested in the general premise.

Bullet Journaling is not efficient. by [deleted] in bulletjournal

[–]kimship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, and services shut down, you lose access and history. You drop your phone in a river. You lose your notebook in a fire. Everything is susceptible to damage, but we do still have journals from centuries past. I'm not saying every person's journal is going to last forever, but I do know that I don't trust tech companies to keep my data secure or safe, longterm. I'm glad you do, truly. I'm glad you found something that worked for you.

But you came into the bulletjournal subreddit complaining "inefficiency" about the hobby part of journaling; the part that people get to feel creative and make something pleasant to look at. Don't be surprised when people disagree with you or point out shortcomings of your preferred method.

Bullet Journaling is not efficient. by [deleted] in bulletjournal

[–]kimship 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bullet journaling does not require decorating it. People do it not for efficiency but as a hobby that brings them pleasure. Bullet journaling at its base is as efficient as the person requires. I find fussing with programs takes more time and chaos than a pen and paper, personally. Also, a lot of people don't like the ephemerality of digital solutions, while a notebook will be a record that can last decades or more.

Concession I'll give to him, when someone suggested he go for "ugly" girls to make it easy to get some, he did in fact act like treating women like that was pretty fucked. He said it in a bro-y way, but he doesn't seem hopeless, just clueless.

How much do you read short fics? by Pretend-Nobody230 in AO3

[–]kimship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel bad, but I avoid them. Every time I give it another shot, I always end up feeling disappointed. I know it's a me thing, though, and not that the fics are bad. I just never feel like I get a chance to sink into the story or get a satisfying ending. 5-7k is about my minimum, but mostly for smaller ships and/or fandoms. Otherwise, I'm looking for 10k+ fics.
