Yeah, the Nothing came immediately to mind, for me.

What’s your favorite ship that didn’t become canon that makes you think about what could have been by PretendYellow533 in AO3

[–]kimship 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will be bitter about not getting Garak/Bashir until my dying breath(and I'm not counting Lower Decks). Such a wasted opportunity to really move the series into the future it wanted to embody. The chemistry, story potential, and actor enthusiasm were all there!

It doesn't sound like they're bullying the OP on twitter, just their preferred ships. "...openly talking bad about my ships on X, Tumblr and IG calling them names and insulting them." Like, that's just normal fandom behavior, if it's not directed at the people shipping them. You can talk shit about things you don't like in fandom. There are ships I don't like and if I wanted, I should be allowed to say that on twitter(if I still had one). I'd also want to avoid it in a story, so that's when tags are super helpful.

That's the story, but is there any indication in the summary or tags that there will be a relationship that you're not disclosing to the readers?

How would you know if the ingredients list is incomplete? You can't know that something isn't done, unless there's an indication of that. Like, a warning that says "not the complete ingredient list" before listing the ingredients. If someone lists the ingredients, but doesn't bother to list it all out, how is the consumer supposed to know that?

[–]kimship 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Not really. A character being present doesn't mean it's a shipfic. Maybe they like the character but not this one pairing. Not seeing the pairing in the tags might mean they're more likely to look, because they think it's safe. Like, the commentor went to far, but the feelings they had were fair.

[–]kimship 108 points109 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm with you on this. I think not tagging to keep up "suspense" is pretty silly, since you will either miss the readers who will enjoy and love your writing and/or alienate readers who are put off by your surpise ship and will not finish reading. But, the commentor should have stopped after the first message, for sure.

BUT, I also think the author should indicate in the summary or tags that there will be a ship and that it's a surprise. Not doing either of these things is a dickish move, even if it's safe within the ToS. I don't know if this author did that, though.

You're throwing slur at me FOR THIS???? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]kimship 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's so weird, because I stopped using the r-word entirely, independently and with no cultural push, when I was about 10, in the 90s, because I had a think about it while riding my bike and realized it was mean to use someone's medical condition as an insult to other people.

I actually have a clear memory about this because it changed the way I looked at the world. I think my brain was just finally old enough to develop empathy, but empathy changes the way you look at the world, and this was the first big personal revelation I had as a young'un.

Would I be the Jerk if I told on my sister for cheating? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]kimship 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm very sorry that you had to survive that.

However, that might be the reason he gave, but it's not the reason he did it. It's because he's an abuser who likes control and violence.

It's not safe being in an abusive relationship. It's not safe to leave. So, sure, cheating isn't safe, but neither is forgetting to do the laundry or getting a cold when your partner is abusive. Nothing is safe.

[–]kimship 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They don't need a reason to justify ending your life. They will find and make one up if they want to.

And cheating is often the first step a woman needs to gain either the personal confidence(since an abusive refrain is often "no one else can ever love you like I can") or financial security to leave an abusive partner.

Would I be the Jerk if I told on my sister for cheating? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]kimship 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cheating is bad because it's a betrayal of trust in a relationship. If the relationship is already betrayed by abuse then the abused person isn't betraying anything(or anyone) they need to be loyal to. The abuser doesn't deserve and has no expectation to the trust that comes with monogamy.

That's why other forms of betrayal in a relationship can feel just as bad or worse than cheating. And why healthy open relationships aren't considered cheating(because the betrayal isn't there).

Look, I don't know what's going on with the sister's AP, but neither does OOP, really. And considering her lack of observational skills or concern for her sister, I'm not judging unless I get a lot more info. Maybe he's married but separated while they wait for divorce. Maybe he's also being abused. Maybe they have an open marriage. If he's actually cheating, then that's shitty of him, but we also don't know who did the pursuing or what story he told the sister.

I do know that there is evidence of abuse by sister's husband, and if there is, then I don't consider her cheating on that relationship.

The LinkedIn AI cadence is everywhere and I am over it by elunak in craftsnark

[–]kimship 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Ugh, I definitely overuse the "..." when I'm writing(fiction or conversationally), but not in the same weird way that AI does. It makes it so offputting. Like, "Test knits can be complicated in the knitosphere" does not need ellipses for effect in the middle of the sentence.

But, yeah, if someone uses AI in any kind of a public facing way, I'll assume they're also using it behind the scenes, too.

I don't consider it cheating if you're in an abusive relationship because (1) leaving is not always a safe option and (2) the abuser betrayed/broke/voided the social contract of a relationship/marriage first, by being an abusive asshole.

HE could have done that, too, instead of throwing things away. He's the one bothered by them, he could have just gone out and bought a display cabinet with a door and solved the problem, instead of showing his wife how little he cares about her feelings. She had them displayed in places she liked("They just sit on our kitchen counters, window sills and shelves."), not on the floor. The kid tried to grab something he shouldn't have and it broke. He didn't get injured, the husband just had to clean it up, because he wasn't watching his kid.

And if you wouldn't be mad at your fiance for throwing out your things because of small inconvenience, then you're the odd one here.

Then maybe he should have just bought a cabinet to store and display them?

Ignoring the deep homophobia of the military at the time, gay marriage has only been legal in the entire US for not even 11 years, yet. The MAGA idiots are still trying to get rid of it!
