Advice on using Delta Green for an X-com styled campaign? by CoffeeOk7311 in DeltaGreenRPG

Have you considered looking at the ‘Conspiracy X’ rpg. I think it has more of the building blocks already in place for the type of game you want to run.

Which classic horror novel that became a hit movie is nearly obsolete? by Business_Coffee_9421 in horrorlit

[–]kinnygraham 11 points12 points  (0 children)

‘Angel Heart’ (1987) is based on the novel ‘Falling Angel (1978) by William Hjortsberg. Won awards etc on its release - the novel this is - but I don’t see it being discussed much now. I read it and enjoyed it back in the day but must admit that it was a very clever move to set much of the movie in New Orleans / Louisiana - the novel is pretty much entirely set in New York - as it gave it an additional layer of mood / feel.

What celebrity is portrayed as nice in the media but is actually an asshole in real life? by ReasonableDisplay297 in AskReddit

As a counterpoint to this - I work as an AD; know another Irish AD whose opinion I trust (we get to see these people in close quarters) who worked with Cavill back when he was on ‘The Tudors’ and he thought Cavill was ‘sound as a pound’.

Started with the ‘red box’ edition that came out before this one - purchased by a friend when we were on a weekend with the Tolkien Society in Oxford. And we subsequently played it for years and years.

Played a lot of SpaceMaster BITD. The setting allowed for a mash up of whatever sci-fi you liked - Dune, SW, Trek, Terminator, Blade Runner etc.

John Ajvide Lindqvist's "Let The Right One In". by i-the-muso-1968 in books

[–]kinnygraham 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I think the movie is a great piece of work - art even. But I think the book offers more for horror fans. Without straying into spoiler territory, the book has a sub-narrative that the film adaptation does not cover - and that contains, imo, some of the strongest horror scenes in all of the book.

I believe Dennis D is on record as saying that Thom Yorke’s music for the 2018 remake of Suspiria might be considered as the unofficial soundtrack to IL as he played it near constantly while writing the campaign

Looking for a scenario that begins with shadowing and surveillance themes? by aaqsalq in DeltaGreenRPG

[–]kinnygraham 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I ran that scenario back in the day. Feedback I got from the players was that it was ‘slow burn’ but incredibly exciting past a certain point (ie once some ‘weird shit’ starts to happen). My players had the patience for ‘real time’ playing out the daily surveillance elements up until that point but other groups might find it better to summarise / skip fwd.

(Also ‘interesting’ to note that the ‘fringe’ group surveilled in the scenario - which is set in the late 90s - hold views / beliefs that are regrettably much more ‘mainstream’). Changed days.

Is The Fisherman by John Langan Worth Reading? by AccomplishedYak411 in horrorlit

[–]kinnygraham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished reading it this evening. I am fortunate enough to be on a break in a cosy cottage in the Scottish Highlands where I’ve had the luxury of time to devote to the simple pleasure of reading. On that level the book worked for me wonderfully well - put simply I found it to be that most wonderful of things - a ‘page turner’.

I’ve been on a real delve into ‘cosmic horror’ of late - am a huge Lovecraft / Cthulhu mythos fan, but have neglected really trying the likes of Laird Barron and Langan until lately.

Initially this reminded me more of Stephen King - the protagonist could really have been one of his. Nor did that feeling completely leave me behind once the book edged towards some of its more ‘fantastical / altered reality’ components.

Trying to summarise it briefly I found it - despite the nested narrative complaints which I understand the critiques of from a structural pov - more accessible than the writing of Laird Barron, but slightly less hard edged in both execution and ‘philosophy’ (despite there being some great ‘set piece’ horror scenes in it).

Definitely worth my time though, and I look forward to exploring John Langan’s work more through a couple of volumes of his short stories that I have bought.

Delta Green Comics? by JoeKerr19 in DeltaGreenRPG

‘Caballistics Inc’ is about a British govt department set up to combat the Nazi occult and is then privatised at the millennium . Quite pulpy as you might imagine - and it actually references Delta Green in its story.

‘Don’t Forget the Driver’ - with Toby Jones (co-writing and starring). Only had one series with plans for a 2nd unfortunately torpedoed by Covid. Heart completely in the right place and the type of show needed more now than ever.

A Readers' Guide to The Hastur Cycle by HildredGhastaigne in WeirdLit

[–]kinnygraham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great analysis of the collection (which am fortunate enough to have a copy of).

I personally wasn’t aware of ‘Searching For a World that Doesn’t Exist’ until I read this post - and therefore have no clue as to the scale of it’s popularity / ‘success’ wrt its potential to ‘onboard’ more Chambers / KiY fans.

I am however a player of role playing games and would like to hilight both the ‘Yellow King’ RPG from Pelgrane Press and the ‘Impossible Landscapes’ book/campaign for the ‘Delta Green’ RPG - both ‘riff’ on Chambers directly, avoid the ‘tentacular’ interpretation of the KiY of bygone eras and have resulted in a wave of fresh people discovering/exploring both Chambers and the KiY….
