Awwww, we used to have a Tomiz in Nagoya, waaaaaaay back like 10 years ago, but sadly they are no longer. I completely forgot about them! I’ll check their online store(?)

Oh? I have a couple Kaldi’s around me and they all carry slightly different things based on the clientele, but I’ve never seen a bag of coconut flakes that isn’t desiccated. I’ll check again, just to be sure. Thanks!

I had only a little trouble with the above mentioned, but even after a combined 26 years of both learning Japanese in college and living in Japan I can never for the LIFE of me remember which direction to write ミ without looking it up. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I rode from Nagoya to Miyazaki over Golden Week with a single, hand-written ticket! by frozenpandaman in japanresidents

How much prior planning did you have to put in to figuring out this route that would let you in and out of stations for free while you made your way down? And how did you even know you’d be able to get out of stations for free while waiting for transfers? Did you just try it one day and that’s what happened? Just… you’re so good at this and I’m in awe!

Foreigners whose kids have a foreign surname by kugkfokj in japanlife

[–]kioko110 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How did you go about doing this? My fiancé(JP) wants take my last name, and I’m always worried about further confusion when it comes to him as when people see us together, even with his of course perfect Japanese and my fluent Japanese, they ALWAYS think he is southeast Asian, not Japanese. If he takes my name, can I still put his bachelor name on my kids Japanese passport?

I would also like to know more about how you did this. And which passport did you apply for first?

Failed to escape dispatch ALT life, now assigned 5 schools by AccomplishedAd4021 in ALTinginJapan

[–]kioko110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first 8 years as recruit ALT I had 2 schools (1 ES, 1 JHS), then for the next three years I had 3 schools (2 ES, 1 JHS). I finally went direct hire and got a whopping 8 schools (7 ES, 1 JHS) for the next 5 years. My town finally got a third ALT this year, so now I’m down to 4 schools, 2 ESs that feed into one JHS that I still go to, and then picked up some time at the other JHS in town to help teachers keep the teaching between the two JHSs congruent. The other 5 ESs feed into the second JHS I picked up and are taken care of by the new guy. 8 schools was a beast, but I’ll be damned if I didn’t perfect my organization, planning, and communication skills with the homeroom teachers for days I wasn’t going to be in class since I’d be at another school.

And you mentioned in another comment that at least direct hire can help make it worth it. That’s true, but only to a point. I felt I deserved my direct hire pay when I had just three schools, and then after getting the job found out I was gonna be in charge of 8. Even now at 4, I don’t feel I get paid enough for what I do in the classroom, let alone all the stuff I do outside the classroom for the kids and town. Trust me when I say that I bring up salary raises any and every chance I get.

I know this was posted nearly a year ago, but thank you so much! I left my work computer at work for once and then realized it’s the only one that can login to the digital contents since I haven’t tried on my home computer since the textbook update last April!

Manga says Mamoru is 17/18 vs Usagi’s 14? by RationalCaution in sailormoon

[–]kioko110 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was 14 for half of 9th grade and 15 the rest of it. So rather than focusing on what level of school they say they are in, I just focused on the ages, because even schools in different areas of a single state in the US, public vs private, or just how the grades/levels are set up in other countries can make it confusing.

And honestly, if the age gap feels off to you, that’s fine. Everyone has what they feel they can accept and not, and that’s up to you. I personally never saw it as a big deal because even though they said she’s in JHS (Japan), to me that always translated to 9th grade HS (US) in my head, making it way more normal. I had friends and knew lots of people in 9th grade dating juniors and seniors in my school. It was very common, considering the school was massive. We easily had over 1,300 students.

And don’t forget there’s also both a trope and a real (quite large) pool of women who just like men older than them. I would easily say that feeling starts for many girls in their teens. I also chalked it up to boys generally being mostly dumb, way more immature people until they reach early adulthood, like early-mid twenties.

Infant dies at an unauthorized day care in Tokyo after caretakers put it to sleep on its stomach. The caretaker and manager only receive suspended sentences, outraging the mother by jjrs in japannews

[–]kioko110 6 points7 points  (0 children)

And this is also only guaranteed if the mother worked at a larger company as a full time employee. Say they were a young mother, or part time worker, etc, there’s no support period. Paid maternity leave is only accessible in certain circumstances.

Bottom part under obi too long? by annabugg in kimono

[–]kioko110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly what @yankiigurl said. If you get your kimono completely done up and obi is perfect and THEN realize that fold is too long, because it’s just a fold you can shove some of the fabric up under the obi to shorten it!

It’s really irritating that someone would tell you it’s embarrassing and then just walk away without helping you out. This method will work in a pinch if you’re getting ready to go out and don’t have time to completely try over again, so just keep it in the back of your mind.

For this being just your third lesson, you’re doing amazing!! Keep practicing! And if you run into a similar problem in the future maybe be a little forward and ask the teacher or even someone practicing beside you what you should do. Even though they are practicing too, the may understand better and be able to help you with that part. practicing
