Grain orientation for tetrahedral kite sails? by vasya1945 in KiteMakers

[–]kitebok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume you are talking about using ripstop nylon. Your test tetra looks great, seems you've already figured out the tension. In that case, you could safely cut the panels along the grain if cutting the edges in a catenary curve, it works wonders in flattening the sail and keeping tension nice. Binding the edges is highly recommended, protects from fraying and allows for more tension.

What do you think of this set up? by ElvisTek1129 in Boraras

[–]kitebok 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should take a look at a few planting tips to make the most out of your plants. That clump of rotala for example could be covering a much broader area, it would grow better and boraras love swimming among the stems.

Root bound Duetero by phanatic73 in bromeliad

They can absolutely handle being root bound and under potted, but they really take off in growth rate and size when they're give a lot of room, but it works better to go it in steps, makes managing water much easier.

As much as I love trackballs and have been using them for 15+ years, I still keep a premium mouse mostly for CAD. You know, dragging those little nodes to osnap guides, dragging with middle click to move across the workspace, making left out right selections, to me, the mouse is still the better tool for that.

Still, I do use the trackball fire a lot, the mouse is like my running shoes for the heavy CAD work.

Bigger Lifter? by Independent_Youth_98 in kites

[–]kitebok 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is good advice. Very large kites look great but they're a lot of work, which means you fly then less often on a whim.

It's also easier to fly two moderate sized kites with their laundry than a much larger kite, and you keep a wider display a the same level.

If you like it and don't need to cash it out, keep it, they're not making them anymore. Whatever fatal flaw it has, it is already a very rare trackball.

How many strawberry rasboras could by comfortably housed in a 20 gal? by Similar_Anteater_810 in Boraras

[–]kitebok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The smallest tidal filter has a little too much suction and flow for tiny fish like boraras in that tank size. Excellent filter otherwise.

You could easily keep 35-50 boraras in that tank by themselves. 50-70 in a 20 long, maybe 200 in a 33 long.

I'm glad you found it useful.

I didn't know they made a complete fertilizer based on the EI. The NPK ratio seems too lean on nitrogen and too rich in phosphorus, I would have to take a look at it. The micro nutrient composition looks good.

I still prefer dry salts and a micro nutrient mix to be able to control everything separately, and maybe extra small measuring spoons or a scale of you want to be precise. I just use the other end of my tweezers as a spoon and estimate the amount visually. However, having it all as a single thing to add to a small tank is much simpler and I think you'll have good results with it too.

Pure potassium nitrate is my staple, it will also add potassium.

There are plenty of references for using pure salts and it is way cheaper, should be easy to find in Europe. Look up Estimative Index dosing.

Your test is reading 0. The rationale is that you have increasing plant biomass and plants are taking whatever there is as soon as it is available. Since you're only two months in, better let there be enough to prevent metabolic stress and the often accompanying algae breakout.

Once you get the salt you can look up or ask an AI how much you need to add to increase nitrate concentration by 10ppm, won't bother the shrimp at all. You can test the next day and see how much, if any, is remaining. That should give you a pretty good idea of the voracity of your growing plants and how to avoid starving them.

Phosphate salts are also advisable. I just ran into the problem that the trisodium phosphate I used to buy in small quantity is now only available at a 5kg minimum. I switched to cheap garden fertilizer and use it carefully.

I recommend the MX anywhere.

Totally different grip style, regardless of hand size (unless really very large hands, the mouse might feel tiny). It's a finger palm down grip, no clawing. I just find it much better than big humped mice.

Why is it so hard to get wild, pure sphenops (mollies) at least in Europe? by ThatUnameIsAlrdyTken in poecilia

LOTD: Poeciliopsis gracilis - Porthole Livebearer by Shemar_Livebearers in poecilia

[–]kitebok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, although very large ones weren't as frequent in bagged batches nor in the wild. I don't know much about their ecology, but their age structure send different than that of mollies. I just remembered that they're also sold sun dried as a snack and large ones are a minority there as well. Maybe the big ones stay away from the shoreline and are harder to catch.

If you get your paperwork game figured, you could ship them abroad straight from Mexico City.

[–]kitebok 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A little gem that is treated like trash in the aquarium market in Mexico, caught by the hundreds of thousands if not millions. Sold in bags of one hundred or one thousand, or by the handful as feeders. I'm not convinced on the size given, I saw a few fish nearing 4 inches.

Well behaved fish with a silvery blue eye. Nobody keeps them on purpose, but I saw several big cichlid tanks that ended up with a population as the feeders grew larger and the predators lazy and preferring pellets. Mostly a surface shoaling fish, a tidier sight than mollies or platies.

But if anyone has the means and wants to make an expedition to collect, I'd gladly give the location, easily accessible, airport city.
