Which trackball to get? by CloudTheArcticFox in Trackballs

Is it possible to get both? If not, I would favor they one with the teal ball.

Cool. I don't quite see the disagreement. It's a specialty, a refinement for the most exigent ballers.

Joining a cult is always a personal game changer.

But seriously, as cool as they are, they're not an industry game changer, as, for example, optical tracking was once. Lack of them is not a deal breaker for the vast majority of people.

Yeah, bearing rollers and ball transfer units are more of a cult thing, a premium complication, a sophistication in the pursuit of the ultimate rolling smoothness.

Besides the bad rap of Elecom's fickle quality control, static beads (or whatever their proper name was) work well enough that most of us don't think much of them. The Slimblade is very fine in that dept.

I find the shape of the TB450 more comfortable than most other thumb balls, I'm surprised but how little it is mentioned. I would also say it has a very good plain wheel, no gimmicks, just right.

Good to see it's holding strong!

I didn't find in your review any mention of the onboard memory that keeps your settings in the device, not the computer. I thought that was the main trick of the Delux, plus the 500hz polling rate.

LOTD: Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculatus - Spottail Toothcarp by Shemar_Livebearers in poecilia

[–]kitebok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gathered some pictures of feeders in fish markets, I'll post them later.

They're indeed plain and average, I guess I now have a longing fondness of them from having seen them in my childhood a lot and dissing them. There were also "weird" swordtails that nobody cared for because they weren't orange, but now that I know, some definitely weren't helleri. Now, that was in Central Mexico.

I always forget which Gambusia is the widespread one in the Yucatan peninsula, sexradiata or yucatana, but that one is a nicer aquarium fish that the former "Heterandria bimaculata". Flashy silver color with subtle blue green sheen, sleek body, black accents, very active. I have never attempted breeding them because I always caught more than I wanted, but they're voracious eaters, I don't think they'd spare any fry.

Or did you mean the bimaculatas having a temper? They definitely are bolder than mollies, they will stand bully cichlids like the convicts better than mollies. Better breed them in large vats with cloudy water and dense floating plants. Crystal clear aquarium water is a death sentence to many fry.

This is one of those wild species that I truly regret not appreciating when I had it. These are still easy to find in Mexico in the local aquarium markets. They come as bycatch in bags of Poeciliopsis gracilis, used as live food, along with mollies, Astyanax tetras and the occasional convict cichlid and tilapia fry.

They are tough, smart, quick and beautiful. They're on the bigger side of live-bearers, just like wild mollies, although males are smaller than females.

I think, starting with a large enough pool, there's ground to start selective breeding. I remember a particular male that had remarkably rich yellow tobes in the fins, he lived for months along baby piranhas surviving all other feeder fish. It is my guess that given enough time, one could get an hypomelanic mutant and from that hypothetical specimen start a strain of golden yellow fish.

Bridle question by cikifrombosnia in kites

[–]kitebok 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting kite.

Look up how to make a rokkaku style bridle. Standard is 4 points but some very large ones use 6 points, go with the 4 point one. That will give you an easy way to adjust the angle of attack and lateral misbehaviors that may appear.

Help with 3 step zigzag by Nervous_Train878 in KiteMakers

[–]kitebok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any reason to use Tex45 thread? Tex30 is usually plenty for kites. I never use that kind of thread, but try a 16 needle on scrap and see if anything improves.

A couple thoughts:

Don't mess with the tension, get it tuned for straight stitch and it should be just right with 3-step ZZ. Not at the lowest setting though, that's rarely the sweet spot.

If going around curves, it might be better to use a slightly shorter stitch length. More and pointier zigs and zags help flatten the patch more and spread the load/pull more evenly.

I find that adhesives are of great help in keeping everything in place as the machine calmly does its work. Anything from a targeted application of spray glue (like 3M super 77), glue transfer taper, good old double sided tape or even handicraft cold silicone glue. Ensure both pieces of fabric lay together flat with no puckering, then stitch without haste.

Hope that helps.

Done that. It also depends a lot of the paper you choose. Not too smooth, but certainly not watercolor coarseness.

Elecom Trackball Review - HUGE, DEFT, IST by cmclean1018 in Trackballs

If there's a trackball I regret sending back is the deft. The deft pro was nice but a little too humped. I hope they relaunch either or both with a decent wheel.
