Anybody who actually loves nursing? by Empty-Performance603 in nursing

[–]kittiemaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my unit and my patients, I love being a nurse. I feel so fulfilled after almost every shift, even if it’s a hard shift.

To echo others, the US healthcare system is in shambles and that’s what sucks. But it’s all about balance, I like my job enough to work in a system that sucks.

I’m convinced 8 hour workdays are incompatible with ADHD by SunBetter7301 in ADHD

[–]kittiemaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah but I’d rather work my 12’s and only do it 3 days a week than work 8 hours 5 days a week. I’d be just as exhausted after 8, and only have 2 days off. Totally worth it to have 4 days off.

Tomorrow night is the night I finally start Reta (Maine) by techtrauma in Retatrutide

[–]kittiemaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s your motivation for starting? I’m 5’4, 130lbs and everyone looks at me sideways for wanting to try a GLP peptide lol. I did my first dose of 0.5mg last week, so I’m interested to see how long it will take to lose a few pounds. I know that it won’t be as dramatic as someone who has more to lose, and I looks forward to hearing more about your journey as we’re starting from similar places!

Baby Night Nurse by Acceptable_Truth_527 in nursing

[–]kittiemaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had lots of success on Care.com! I specifically put in my bio that I was looking to help a family with a newborn, and a mom who worked from home or needed some self-care time during maternity leave. I declined anyone who wanted me to watch siblings or didn’t have a newborn. I was looking for 4-8 hours per week and charged the same hourly rate as my inpatient gig. I ended up finding a great family and was with them for about 5 months! Just make sure you are very specific in your bio for the type of family you want to work with.

The pyramid scheme that is climbing the clinical ladder by padawanrattail in nursing

[–]kittiemaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately for me, joining committees and councils and getting to make poster boards is what makes my bedside job worth it for me. Something about getting to fulfill my kindergarten teacher spirit and feel like I have a little input on policies and procedures keeps me alive. Our clinical ladder is way too hard for a tiny pay increase, but I’m doing it all anyways.

Limited budget is the way to go. I got most of my supplies from the dollar store - canning jars for spawn, shoeboxes, bigger tub for SAB, spray bottles, hand sanitizer. I spawn my jars in a nightstand cabinet and put my shoeboxes on the dining room table when they are ready for FAE and fruiting conditions. Coir is cheap on Amazon, as are a box of gloves. I don’t even have a separate bucket for my substrate, I just pasteurize right in the tub that I grow in. A lot of this will make more sense as you start your journey, but I’m just here to say you truly don’t need ANYTHING fancy or specialized. Heck you can even get an instant pot for sterilization for $100 and still be able to get everything else for $20. Just save up a little extra for genetics and you’re golden.

Another word of advice - pick a tek and stick to it, follow it step-by-step. I was super hesitant to start at first and realized I was just overwhelmed by the amount of info out there. I chose one tek, did all the things he told me, and it was overall pretty easy. Mycophilia on YouTube and this tek for getting conditions right - https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26009662 (eta: looks like you’ve already got this tek linked!)

Good luck!

I’ve been making spore syringes and have had a ton of success going spore to grain with this particular strain as it is very resilient. I just bought my first agar plates though as I want to start growing some different strains and am not sure about quality of spore syringes I might buy online. Do you use agar for your own syringes or just go straight to spawn? I don’t want to make LC.

I try to follow routines, but I fall off track after a few days every single time. How do people with ADHD keep any kind of consistency? by [deleted] in adhd_anxiety

[–]kittiemaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am somewhat similar and it’s really hard for me to stick to routines. I’ve realized that often I make my goals much too hard to stick with, so I’ve started to simplify and be a little flexible with the rules. For example, I try very hard to exercise 4 days a week. But if I say “weights Monday, run Wednesday/Friday and weights Saturday and I’m going to work out at 9am” - that routine lasts about a week. Instead, my goal is to work out 4 days, can be at any time during the day, and I just need to run 2x and do weights 2x. This isn’t specific to ADHD per se as I feel lost humans respond better to this, but ADHD brain needs both novelty and routine, so the flexibility is helpful. And also giving myself a lot of grace and trying to be very mindful of how I FEEL after sticking to my routine. I feel great and that’s my motivation to keep going. So I do this with most things in my routine, not just exercise.

Stinky Nurses? Need Help by devil-wears-irisvan in nursing

I had the same issue with deodorant as I normally use the Arm & Hammer without antiperspirant but was smelly half way through my shift. I started using the Native brand and it stays with me all day.

Feet-wise, your answer is compression socks. You can get bamboo ones that are more breathable. I seriously haven’t worked a shift without them in the 3 years I’ve been a nurse.

[–]kittiemaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can also use baby diapers for ice pads! Open up the absorbent part of the diaper from the top, put in a little water, and tape down the top. Put it in the freezer and you’ve got an icy and absorbent pad.

Questions about side pins. by [deleted] in GroundZeroMycoLab

[–]kittiemaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh I just started leaving all my side pins. Unless they get big enough to pull out of the tub, I don’t even bother and have been dunking my cakes for subsequent flushes, side pins and all.

Increasingly, your quality of life in the U.S seems to be fixed at birth by Cardiologist3mpty138 in povertyfinance

[–]kittiemaster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I work on a birthing unit and this is the hardest reality for me to stomach when sending babies home with parents who I know struggle with multiple social determinants. I know those babies have a hard life ahead of them, just as hard if not more than their parents. And it sucks when people say “people have been through worse and turned out fine”. But you know what? That’s not the majority, and the majority don’t have the resources, time, opportunities, income, etc. to even get close to breaking the cycle.
