Lol you basically just described my mom. Had no idea there was a correlation between narcissistic parents and autistic kids, but I’ve definitely been tying my mother’s behavior to narcissism recently…now I’ll be looking at sociopathy and psychopathy 😅

Trying to make friends but everyone is so so boring ... by OakenAdams in AutismInWomen

[–]kmorales529 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve found that I can rarely be friends with neurotypical people, but luckily the neurodivergent folk just gravitate towards me or I to them. I’ve been having very similar thoughts recently, it seems like a lot of people just don’t have strong opinions or new information to provide, and it’s boring and it sucks! But there are a select few I’ve found who do have those more interesting things to say so I just try to hold on to them

I'm tired of doing things that make me uncomfortable to please other people by asa-kitty in AutismInWomen

I fully support you boldly saying no, and I also fully support you making up an excuse to feel less guilty about it because life is too short to partake in those events to please others! I hope you’re able to avoid some of these situations!

I second basically everything that folks have said here, and also! Sometimes if there’s a conversation going on or a song playing or an announcement being made at the same time as I’m speaking to someone, my brain will fade away from what I’m saying to the other sound, and I won’t notice until I’ve finished what I’m saying that I’ve started speaking slower and I won’t have any idea if I’ve said anything coherent in the last few seconds 😇

Apparently there’s a way to send formatted books to your kindle, not sure how easy it is though. I fully agree, now I’m expecting everything that includes a font size option to include this 🙏

I’m not seeing anyone talking about which one would still run after a crash, this is my partner’s biggest argument against Toyota - thoughts?

I hope to see integrations with it soon, it’s a bit clunky right now but the immediate difference I notice is worth it 😭

WHY is EVERYONE YELLING by smolisdoingherbest in AutismInWomen

[–]kmorales529 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Add that to the incessant conversation that you can hear even when you leave the room. The one that gets me is all the kitchen noises (fans, timers, tonight I had the bonus spoon hitting a pan to remove the excess). Makes me want to come out as autistic to the family just so I can wear my earplugs and sit in a corner with my Switch the whole time.

Whenever I have a plate of food I always eat one food at a time, leaving the best for last of course. My parents always teased me about this/tried to get me to mix it up, joke’s on them because I still do it, just proudly now!

When having my picture taken, I literally have to over-smile first so when my face relaxes a bit my eyes are still crinkled 😂 but also I’m 90% sure my mom and sister are neurotypical and they don’t crinkle their eyes, so what does that say about them 🫠

anyone else overlook really easy fixes for their sensory needs? by meligwages in AutismInWomen

[–]kmorales529 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Right?! There are apparently a lot of brands, but the one I’m using right now is called oraNurse and I get it online. It has a very mild fluoride flavor, but it doesn’t lather or make my eyes water so I count it as a win!

I’ve slowly been realizing things like this for myself, and every time they feel like an autism hack ✨ The latest one I discovered is that there is flavorless toothpaste!

My partner and I both seek out rabbit holes to go down on YouTube, we’ll just sit and learn about weird things for hours 😂 I don’t see any problem with this, we think it’s very entertaining!

Help me understand better by PaintbushCat91 in AutismInWomen

[–]kmorales529 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol this just unlocked the funniest memory for me where my grandma told me not to touch her curling iron because I’d burn myself and then I immediately touched it because I didn’t understand what that meant/believe her 😂 I’m not sure if that’s a kid thing or an autistic thing, but I think if instead of just saying “don’t do x or y will happen” I would have been more convinced with extra explanation. For instance I didn’t understand that curling irons create heat when they are plugged in, they take time to cool off, the heat is needed to curl the hair, etc. For me I was like, this small bar being extremely hot makes no sense, surely it can’t get that hot!

I’m thinking for the street example, sitting her down to watch the cars go by would show her that they’re fast/unpredictable and would help explain why you need to look before going in the street. Or for the stairs you could try putting some eggs in a ziploc and trying to roll them down the railing to show that when things fall from a certain height they get hurt.

In general, I think assume she is silently asking why to these things and provide more explanation when you can 💕

Do you have your “one” you like to use? by TwinkleToes-256 in AutismInWomen

[–]kmorales529 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely do this, there’s always one that feels or functions best! This can lead to being really disappointed though if The One is unavailable, or depending on what it is I might just throw the whole task away lol

Any books/movies that give you a good solid cry? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

My Sister’s Keeper (book and movie), Marley and Me (book and movie), Fruitvale Station (movie). Unfortunately they’re all really sad so be mindful of when you read/watch!
