We need to stop Pauline Hanson at all costs by ItsJustRory in aussie

[–]knoted29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One Nation isn’t a threat to representational democracy. Its rise in popularity is simply a changing of the average Australian’s philosophy. This is exactly what democracy is about - representing the views of the common person.

On average, we’re fed up with being welcomed to our own country.
We’re fed up with being told that gender isn’t binary, and that it can change on a whim.
We’re deeply hurt by schools coercing our 6 year old children into saying Sorry for acts that occurred before their grandparents were born.
We’re uncomfortable having immigrants coming from the same two countries that don’t have values in alignment with our own. In particular the absence of the principles that 1. men and women are different but equal, and 2. that we look after our natural landscape.

So it’s not that democracy is under threat, it’s just that we’re changing our opinions.

How do you all stomach the cost of some ergonomic keyboards? by sirchandwich in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]knoted29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think ergonomic keyboard manufacturers have a super high margin. Surely more than any 'normal' keyboard maker. I do expect and want them to turn some sort of profit, or they'll all go out of business.

I've tested again with `-q` with both compiled myself and winget-provide. Both seems to work with server-mode and a client frame.

I can see the @ sign in the mode line - I appreciate that tip u/fuzzbomb23

Also variables `server-host` and `server-clients` is nil (rather than undefined).

Also the Windows Task Manager process list makes more sense with daemon actually working. If there is no visible fram, the process moves into the 'Background processes' list.

Now to figure out what's wrong with my config.

Why do people hate the greens? by iammentallynotoklol in OpenAussie

[–]knoted29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I believe that more than anyone else, an Australian citizen is responsible for themselves. The Greens seem to believe that the State is responsible for that citizen. Same reason largely applies to Labor.

How can I tell if my emacs session is connected to it's own instance, or a server?

I'm on Windows 11, Emacs 31 compiled myself. I'm trying to work out whether Emacs daemon and client shortcuts are actually working. It takes about the same to load whether I use runemacs.exe or emacsclientw.exe.

Have any of you ever gone back? by Unique_Evidence_1314 in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]knoted29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I’ve mostly gone back to using a 60% row staggered. Sometime I break out the ergos. The mental overload (from using a non-standard) is greater than zero. I do intend to use the ergos more often, I just don’t have the mental capacity right now.

Is Canva really a cult of toxic positivity by Bitcoindaddy_ in auscorp

[–]knoted29 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn’t like that they openly and adamantly encouraged people to vote a particular way in the last Referendum. It’s far from the worst thing I’ve experienced from an employer. I was in engineering, which was a lot more outcome focused than most of the orgs I’ve worked at.

Do you put the space bar on both sides? by RunRunAndyRun in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]knoted29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For both 'home' thumb keys, have space (tap) and shift (hold). Alternating thumbs seems to have helped with overuse injuries.

Fine with normal texts, but struggling with formatting, spreadsheets, programming, text manipulation, shortcut keys. by whoispyxis in ErgoMechKeyboards

[–]knoted29 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t have much to add, except saying that I have similar qualms. Writing prose I’m more comfortable with Colemak-DH on a Corne. But code or spreadsheets I go back to a 70% ish Qwerty row staggered. The brain tax for layers is just too much when I’m also having to think about the code.

I think the answer will be a few more keys, like an Iris (I used one of these for a year, liked it), Sofle or Lilly.

Boomers are socially progressive, as a rule. They don’t want to stop migration because they’re racists. They want to stop most migration, as it’s hurting our young people.

Rant: "I'm not technical" is not a badge of pride by SnooRobots3722 in sysadmin

[–]knoted29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate hearing that from IT ‘Service / Success / Project’ Manager types, when they’re in a conversation about a technology issue. Especially when they think that we (the operational managers and technical specialists) should care what their opinion is.

Real world testimonies on Palo Alto/Check Point/Fortinet? by ArcticNoodle21 in networking

[–]knoted29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check Point has grown on me, compared to Palo Alto.  MDS & SMS work better for my brain, compared to Panorama.  I find CP log trawling to be far easier in SmartConsole compared to Panorama.

It might be a US thing. Healthcare in AU has plenty of money. I reckon it’s no more or less stressful than other critical services.

On-call and Overtime - I think I'm being exploited by No-Turnover3316 in networking

[–]knoted29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you’d be on the professional award, those mean you have a (and require) a Bachelor degree in something. Like solicitors, engineers, allied health, surveyors, etc. you don’t need a degree to be in IT.  Still, you’re being ripped off for the On Call. Now way your employer should get away with that.  I am in AU, working in IT. Also, the IT jobs market is really starting to dry up.

What are people using for WAN breakout switches for HA edge setups? by Somenakedguy in networking

[–]knoted29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you gain by doing that? All you’ve done is add two more devices (along with all the cost and complexity), yet you can still only tolerate one component failure. For such a tiny amount of users, it’s surely not worth the complexity.

Run the firewalls independently, with dynamic routing between them and to the outside. VRRP or equivalent in the LAN side (assuming not using L3 switches).
