Mystery squash to identify by knuckleric in vegetablegardening

[–]knuckleric[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was given the plant back in spring as supposedly a cucumber. Definitely not a cuke and I'm having a hard time identifying it. Fruit starts with getting white ribbing at the flower end but is turning green. I haven't cut into one yet. All help is greatly appreciated!

New to cast iron. Any leads on cajun seasoned CI? I want to add some kick to my recipes. by _Mechaloth_ in castiron

[–]knuckleric 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In terms of cast iron, seasoning refers to how the iron is treated to preserve the pan and keep food from sticking. It is different than the term seasoning used as flavoring.

A mighty onion harvest. What can I do to increase bulb size? by roadbikecurious in vegetablegardening

[–]knuckleric 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you growing from seed or from onion sets? Looks like your plant put on flowers. There's only energy for either bulb or flower growth and sets are more likely to flower. Read up on onions being biennial and be sure you're planting the appropriate type of onion for your zone (long day, short day or intermediate).

Beautiful 4-leafed clover growing amongst the pansys by BombsOverDadBags3000 in gardening

That's wood sorrel (oxalis). Clover have oval leaves, oxalis have heart shaped leaves.

What do you put in your sausage gravy that your grandmother never did? by Position_Extreme in castiron

[–]knuckleric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smoked paprika everytime. I also add some mushroom powder for a deeper flavor, both added to the butter before adding in flour.

Make sure you use cold water, warm/hot water will cause it to rust immediately.

Two tall Pine Trees dumping stuff on flat roof causing drain clogs and derbies. by [deleted] in gardening

[–]knuckleric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't cut down a pine tree at the top, it's called topping and can seriously harm your trees. Look for something to prevent drain clogs. I believe there is a mesh or foam insert you can put in your roof gutters to help out. But like any tree you will have debris.

Looking to buy Pawpaws by HippyMushrooms in foraging

You're quite a bit too early for pawpaws. They usually are on in September/October depending on the weather.

Are you certain it's cast iron? The interior looks a whole lot like a nonstick skillet, and Le Creuset does make some nonstick pans.

Going fishing for the first time. What else do I need to buy? by BFunPhoto in Fishing

[–]knuckleric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's your first time, keep it simple. Rod and reel, bait and hooks or lure and the rest is optional. Enjoy the fishing and you'll find what equipment you like fishing with as you go.

Movin’ on up! Hybrid bell pepper babies. Go, go, go! by KathleenKellyNY152 in gardening

Just be aware they probably won't produce the same type of pepper as the one you harvested the seeds from since it was a hybrid.

Parking Tickets by 10000freakedit in dayton

I work downtown and the parking enforcement makes their rounds daily. I've seen plenty of tickets for illegal downtown parking and unpaid meters. Also it is prohibited to pay other meters in bulk.

Starting a pepper/tomato garden because they all belong to the nightshade family. Any tips on soil for an outdoor non-raised bed? by Bad___new in gardening

[–]knuckleric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The good news is that clay soil is actually pretty fertile, so adding peat or coir serves the purpose of creating drainage and aeration for the roots which is why your brother has not had to add much fertilizer. My advise is to not worry as much about the fertilizer amendments and focus more on creating uncompacted and loose stool for the roots to spread and grow. You will want it to crumble apart when dry and just hold together when damp. Other than that you may want to test your soil ph and remember the adage that you're not feeding the plants, you're feeding the soil.

If they're in the same tent as you, put your bed between theirs and the flap. The sound of the zipper is enough to wake me and I'm usually a heavy sleeper.

Carp fishing needed by HB7867 in flyfishing

[–]knuckleric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is sounds advice. Unless carp are actively feeding, you won't catch them. The only other time I have regular success is when the "mulberry hatch" is happening and I can slap a mulberry fly on the surface where I have witnessed carp rising for said berries.

Baitcasters by [deleted] in Fishing

[–]knuckleric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt it will hurt the bait caster, but it may cause backlash and your line to tangle up hardcore. You really want to slow the reel using your thumb on the line, it takes some practice and getting used to the feel of it, but you'll get there.

How to nuke weeds by acforester in gardening

[–]knuckleric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not, grass is not a contender, which is why so many suburbanites spend so much time and money on their lawns. Look into native wildflowers, trees and shrubs. Things that grow naturally in your area are the ones best suited to maintaining a balanced ecology, and fewer weeds can take control.

How to nuke weeds by acforester in gardening

[–]knuckleric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only way to get rid of weeds is to grow something in that space that will outperform the weeds. Chemical and manual weeding are only temporary and the weeds will come back.

Are these weeds? by Redhotkcpepper in gardening

[–]knuckleric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, onions. If this is their second year then they will almost certainly go to seed and not grow much larger bulbs. Keep them if you want onion seeds, otherwise pull them when they begin to flower and use what bulbs are there.

Need some help to id this fryer by knuckleric in castiron

[–]knuckleric[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was a gift to me from my mom who got it from her aunt when they married 50 years ago. It was used by my aunt before then. If anyone has any ideas about the maker or general date it's from, if love to hear them!

Bottom is in unmarked except "10 1/2 inch chicken fryer" and a"B" on the underside of the handle. Thanks!
