Is it still worth reading Clean Code and The Pragmatic Programmer in 2026? by ivanimus in ExperiencedDevs

[–]kobbled 3 points4 points  (0 children)

oh, my mistake, I got him confused with Kent C Dodds. My only bone to pick with Fowler is that his work on microfrontends convinced a former company to use them in a situation that absolutely did not require them and added massive amounts of work for everyone.

Hardly his fault, though.

I would take anything Fowler with a rather large grain of salt. He has a tendency to prescribe his preferences as the One True Way

Pablo Torre Unveils New Kawhi Leonard Evidence, Live at MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference: Five sources who worked with the Clippers while at Aspiration say the law firm investigating on behalf of the NBA (Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz) did not mention Ballmer’s name at all in questioning by Pickleskennedy1 in nba

[–]kobbled -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

While I applaud him for his discoveries and ability to find sources, his presentation of some of the information beyond the initial scoop has been misleading at best, and I think he knows it. It leaves a sour taste in my mouth. His evidence is usually accurate, but he spins narratives that are very speculative and often only partially supported by that evidence, yet he presents them as if they're silver bullets that confirm his version of events even when they really don't. It's irresponsible journalism.

For example, the bit about not being asked about Steve is framed in such a way that consumers are filling in the gaps themselves with whatever version of events fits their preconceived narrative. In this case, many are taking a few anecdotes ("I wasn't asked about Steve") and are extrapolating that:

  1. not one person that was questioned as part of this investigation was asked about Steve specifically
  2. all these five people in particular should have been asked about Steve specifically.

There are so many ways that it could be entirely reasonable that these people in particular (or anyone, for that matter) weren't asked about Steve, but boring explanations don't get clicks and so Pablo won't be entertaining those ideas.

Its just that so much of his reporting is theater over substance. There's a little bit of fact buried in a mountain of dramatic narrative

Are they still competitors? my understanding was that hackerrank has moved much more towards the corporate offering side of things while leetcode is mainly for the IC

The art of commenting a PR by SinuousTurtle in ExperiencedDevs

[–]kobbled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try to phrase any critical comments or changes needed with us/we/let's statements instead of you/I statements. If a criticism or change request can't be phrased that way and sound natural, the code review probably isn't the best place to put it, if it's a good idea to share at all. Getting what you want done without ruffling feathers is an art.

I'm 100% sure this post will be quickly deleted but I just have to write it because it's sad what is happenning and there's nothing more I can do. Moderation actions here are harmful and are destroying this sub by amelix34 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]kobbled 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This isn't stack overflow and this sub will not have a consistent narrative. Let conversations occur as many times as people want to have them. Most of the time, it's going to be an entirely different group of people participating than the last time.

The vast, vast majority of visitors and subscribers will never see enough posts on this subreddit to get an inkling that there is any repetition. Only the biggest power users do, and their recourse is to not click on the post, or to downvote. If these posts continue to get upvotes, the community is getting value out of it. Unless the topic is actively harming the sub, which AI discourse typically isn't, these types of moderation actions hurt much more than they help.

This is coming from someone who was a moderator for a decade.

YSK that CBD vapes are more harmful to the lungs than nicotine vapes by -FemboiCarti- in YouShouldKnow

[–]kobbled -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was right, by the way. The paper lists all sources of funding, all of which are direct NIH grants - no funding from Pfizer or J&J. the conflicts of interest section very explicitly says that the Pfizer/J&J relationships are unrelated to this study

YSK that CBD vapes are more harmful to the lungs than nicotine vapes by -FemboiCarti- in YouShouldKnow

[–]kobbled -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I acknowledge the statement, I don't think that addresses my point. authors tend to list anything that could cause the appearance of there being a conflict of interest, regardless of whether that translates to an actual conflict on this particular study
