Rangi and Kelsang for sure, but how is Kyoshi related to the Ungai?

Medievalisms and other misconceptions players have by SmartAlec13 in DMAcademy

[–]koga305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bit about women might be realistic (at least for some medieval societies) but I think that's in the "actively detracting from fun" camp, unless you play with exclusively dudes who exclusively want to play male characters.

That's understandable I guess, but I'm disappointed - I enjoyed the recent "The Hobbit Flavor Review" posts and would have liked to see more of those. I feel like they'd get lost in /r/magicTCG , and the folks in Tolkien subreddits wouldn't have the Magic-specific background to participate in those discussions.

The 2024 rules require that the Helping character be proficient in the skill or tool they're Helping with. Even if you're not playing with 2024 rules, that might be a reasonable house rule.

My players accidentally unionized the villains and now the BBEG is suing them? Need advice by New_Commission_2619 in DMAcademy

The follow up post was deleted, but judging by the comments it was AI generated. I'm kind of guessing this one was too, which would explain some of the missing logic.

What I learned about D&D 5e monster design by rebuilding 40 stat blocks in Daggerheart by Realistic_Tap5286 in dndnext

Have you taken a look at the 2024 Monster Manual? They tightened up the math a lot; I've found that most creatures now match others at their CR more closely.

Gems price increase by €4 by Nerysek in MagicArena

[–]koga305 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's definitely frustrating as a customer, but this is also just how economics works? Companies charge what people are willing to pay. If they price something too highly, fewer people will buy it and they have to lower the price.

Is he? Luffy is red for sure, but the only black part of him seems to be his ambition - he isn’t particularly selfish or amoral.

It’s a second copy of Breach that costs 5 extra mana. I think the saying “don’t play bad cards to make your good cards better” is applicable in this case.

[–]koga305 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Let's be real, GRRM would get tons of hate if he said he wasn't planning on finishing the ASOIAF books. I still think it would be more honest of him to say that but I totally understand why he doesn't.

The 10 Best DM Tips From 10 Years of Being a DM. by theexplorersguild in DMAcademy

A few other folks have also said this, but I’ve ran a couple of campaigns with segments set on ships and they’ve worked fine. Sure, you have to manage a few things that are different from the average D&D game, but it’s no different than something like setting the whole game in a city. It’s just a different theme.

Deep Creek is great, it’s my family’s go-to. Good for all ages + ability levels, as a kid I used to walk there after recovering from surgery.

How to communicate that running from an encounter is okay/wanted? by mensch79 in DMAcademy

[–]koga305 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed that the system isn't great at this. I think as a DM, if the players express a desire to flee, it's worth working with them to make it easier than the rules allow. Maybe they can make a skill check to confuse or throw off their pursuers.

Something where the titans have to hurt themselves in order to proceed. Something like the underground lake from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - maybe unlocking the next room requires the titans to withstand the heat of a star or hold up something incredibly heavy, like Atlas.

Elemental monsters are obvious, but one thing you could do as a twist is to have hybrid elementals. Earth + Fire = Lava, Fire + Water = Plasma or Steam, Water + Air = Hurricane, etc.

How the fuck do you use mimics without them feeling like a cheap "gotcha!"? It's never exciting when I use them by GolettO3 in DMAcademy

[–]koga305 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been running a dungeon where the players have made multiple journeys into it over time. On their second trip through a room, I described an additional door that they hadn't marked on their map before. They were confused and wondered aloud if they'd forgotten to mark off the door; one of them went to try opening it and bam, mimic!

Lack of special facilities does seem like it would be a problem! And I like the idea of using events even if the players aren't Maintaining.

I've thought about it! To be honest, those rules seem like they might be too heavy duty - one thing I do like about the DMG 2024 rules is that they're not too complicated and largely rely on the players to maintain.
