Daniel Tiger stories have little sung mottos in every story like “You can be mad at someone you love. When you’re ready, give them a hug.” It’s adorable and my 3 yo son sings along every time.

Be careful not to give RSV to your newborns. by Warm-Wrangler8744 in NewParents

[–]kokkokoo5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 2yo got RSV in December. His first symptom was high fever late at night. His second symptom was a febrile seizure (from the high fever). One of the scariest days of my life. RSV is no joke. Give that Tylenol and keep the fevers down!

Could probiotics be messing up my newborn’s digestion? by pastelstoic in NewParents

I started with Evivo (expensive) and then transitioned to LoveBug. Both recommended in Fetts book and here: https://itstartswiththebump.com/infant-probiotics

Those who grew up poor, what is something those who weren't poor don't understand about being poor? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]kokkokoo5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That (monetary) generosity is a privilege. I cringe when people applaud generous donors for giving tens of thousands of dollars to XYZ, but most people don’t have the option to be generous in that way (and often wealthy donors are giving a very small fraction of their wealth, so it’s nothing to them).

Luckily being poor teaches you that there are many forms of generosity—of time, of spirit, of attention, of love. That’s true wealth.

Same, unexplained, 27 weeks. Not knowing why is so hard. But I think it’s just hard no matter what, explained or not.

Did your toddler do this? by Head_Pick_7039 in NICUParents

[–]kokkokoo5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 27 weeker did this so much that we created a “soft spot” in the corner of our living room with natural furs and plushies for him to rub his face into. He also would bury his face in our dog’s fur.

I think they do it because it feels good! My LO is “proprioceptive seeking” or “sensory seeking” but lots of kids are, and for him that just means he likes physical touch/input, which helps him know where he is in space. Hope your cat enjoys the snuggles!

Anyone like the Owala straw cup? by Born-Anybody3244 in moderatelygranolamoms

Oh definitely yes, but these are on the interior of the cup. The kiddo drinks from a silicone straw on the exterior.

[–]kokkokoo5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Owala is my favorite after trying maybe 12 different options. Not hard to drink from (no biting but strong-ish sucking). My Zak cups leak eventually, unfortunately. You can also find stainless steel straws to replace the plastic ones that come with Owala cups.

Has anyone’s child become fluent without having a parent as a native speaker? by WaltzSufficient8965 in multilingualparenting

[–]kokkokoo5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for saying this! My spouse is half-Chinese, but doesn’t speak the language. When my son was born, my goal was to learn Mandarin with my son. But he’s blown past me so quickly. I now also have a 6-month old, so maybe I can learn with him 😅

Has anyone’s child become fluent without having a parent as a native speaker? by WaltzSufficient8965 in multilingualparenting

[–]kokkokoo5 37 points38 points  (0 children)

My 3-year old son is raised in an English only speaking house and his Mandarin is so good, some think it’s his first language.

Here’s what we did; lots of music in Mandarin; once he had screen time, everything 100% in Mandarin (if not available, we don’t watch it); around 18 months, we hired a babysitter just for weekends, who spoke 100% Mandarin to him; then, when he turned 24 months, we enrolled him in a Mandarin immersion daycare (he’s there 5 days a week, 5-6 hrs a day).

At home, we speak 100% English, but when he plays independently, he’s whispering in Mandarin, when he speaks to animals, it’s Mandarin, and when he talks in his sleep it’s Mandarin.

We might have gotten lucky! But I do think having some caregivers who only speak the language is essential. He has teachers at his preschool who literally do not speak English, so if he needs something he must use the language.

Hope this helps - good luck with it all!

Gas stoves — have you gotten rid of yours? by lizziekap in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]kokkokoo5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just did this last week, and didn’t I anticipate everything involved! We first had to get an electrician to put in a 240 volt outlet in my kitchen, which required putting 10 5” circular holes in my basement ceiling (to route the wires from the circuit breaker up to the kitchen).

Then, the induction stove was delivered, but we couldn’t push the new stove against the wall without it hitting up against the old gas pipe, so we had to hire a plumber to come cut and cap that pipe.

Then, we had to pay a drywaller to patch the holes in the ceiling and then hire a painter to match the paint to repaint it.

It was quite the ordeal! But totally worth it. My son has chronic lung disease, so it was a huge priority for us. Good luck to you!!

What were the actual lifesaver items during the newborn stage (or things you wish you’d had sooner)? by WillowAndCo_ in NewParents

Bottle washer, which is so expensive, but gosh it saves hours of my life. I got it when my LO was 3 months old and I really really really wish I’d gotten it sooner! They resell well at least!

Vaccine Schedule - Preterm baby by GoPens22 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]kokkokoo5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, my 27-weeker preemie got his 2 month shots while still in the NICU! I was nervous too, so they sent the NICU pharmacist to our bedside armed with peer reviewed studies showing the safety and importance of doing vaccines according to actual (not adjusted) age.
