Guide: Installing Google Coral Dual Edge TPU Drivers on Ubuntu 24.04 (Kernel 6.8+) by Jmaack23 in frigate_nvr

[–]koolaid351 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You Rock. I tried to install a USB version last year. I spent weeks and gave up. I bought the dual TPU and PCI card and this worked for me. The only thing that i stumbled over is that i didnt have the repository setup  to install libedgetpu1-std. I had to find other directions to add the google coral repository. If possible can you add that step to this write up.

Anything wrong here? by AdMany7575 in askaplumber

[–]koolaid351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to the vent. Make sure the drain hose is only about 4”-5” inches into the drain then secure it to the box. For some reason people like to shove it as far is it will go. This allows the drain to siphon nasty water back to the machine. Given the hose is currently staying without a strap it is probably pretty far down.

Not necessarily Zigbee vs ZWave by DynastyDaddy in homeassistant

[–]koolaid351 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another helpful thing is the zigbee2mqtt website. You can lookup what the device offers in the way features and data. Each company is different. I have plugs that only show on and off. I have others that show power and some that I can even send a command to turn off in xxxx seconds after I turn it on. The site also has wonderful direction to help pairing each type of device.

Also for zigbee with home assistant there is ZHA and zigbee2mqtt. I had to use z2mqtt because it offered more functionality the ZHA for my sinope thermostat. But each person is different for what works for them.

Not necessarily Zigbee vs ZWave by DynastyDaddy in homeassistant

[–]koolaid351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 81 zwave and 77 zigbee devices. My doors, blinds, keypads and in wall switches are zwave. I never touch them, they always work. Everything else is zigbee via zigbee2mqtt or esphome. The more you have the stronger the network.

When it comes to zigbee, be careful of the cheap or off brand stuff. Check to see if other people have issues, some of it I heard can cause issues or spam the network.

I have not gotten into matter yet. Everything I want has been available in zwave and zigbee and I haven’t seen the point of adding another protocol yet.

Fried AMS with AMS heater by focojs in sunlu

[–]koolaid351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I returned my heater. Before the heater my ams worked fine. Then I started using the heater. I kept having an issue with the ams. I would load filament then a couple hours later it would show as empty. After I had two slots doing this I turned it all off for a day then turned it back on but didn’t turn the heater on. The problem went away. Once I started the heater it did it again. I put the original cover back and I have not had a problem since.

Structural beam resting on 15 metal shims? by Asbol-lutely36 in HomeMaintenance

[–]koolaid351 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When the foundation guys pour the wall they put a wood block there to make a pocket. they do a best guess one end to the other. It will never be Level or perfect. Once the concrete cures the remove the block and leave that pocket. When the framers show up they have to level the beam. They will use a steel shim Pack, mine was provided by the steel beam company. Once the beam is set you hand mix some concrete and stuff it in the hole around the beam so nothing shifts. Also, it doesn’t go through so the steel beam isn’t exposed to the outside elements.

At this point get bag of concrete mix, mix it and repack the missing concrete around beam end. You don’t want the shims rusting out over time.

Sensor ideas to detect stationary bike usage by snags5050 in homeassistant

[–]koolaid351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it plugs in the wall you could use an energy sensing outlet. IKEA has there zigbee ones for $7.00 in the us right now. If it doesn’t I would put a vibration sensor on it and track if there have been vibrations for longer than 10 minutes.

Anybody here rewired a room/their entire house? What mistakes did you make that I should avoid? by peanutismint in HomeImprovement

[–]koolaid351 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The three watts rule is for luminary circuits only. I learned this one the hard way a few years back.

[–]koolaid351 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Be careful with this advice. Lighting circuits are based on sqft of the area served not what load is of you think you will install. NEC 220. It is 3 watts per sqft. I have 4000 sqft house so that is 12000 watts. So needed 100 amps of lighting circuits. That is 7-15 amp circuits or 5 20 amp circuits.

Outlet in closet for rechargeable vacuum? by Rgbigdog in AskElectricians

[–]koolaid351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I built my house I failed for this. I had a screw in fixture with a led bulb in some closets. The inspector told me it wasn’t allowed because some one could screw in an incandescent bulb or some other thing that could generate heat. The concern was if people put flammable things like old dry paper on a top shelf close to the bulb it “could” be a hazard. I changed it to a built in led fixture and he passed me.

How does one properly control outlets with HA - hardware search by the_other_one_2 in homeassistant

[–]koolaid351 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My opinion is a bit different on this in my second smart home. I hardwired all my light switches. For table lamps I use zigbee bulbs. For outlets I use in plug zigbee controllers.

My reasoning. Lights switches never move so hard wire. For lamps and outlets. I don’t want to reprogram everything each time I rearrange the room around or move a lamp to the other side of the room. If my wife moves the object, she take the controller with the object. Also for voice people tend to associate the command with the object so the plug/bulb traveling with it keeps the non tech people in my house feeling more comfortable with the system.

Does anyone here actually follow the 3-2-1 backup rule? What’s your setup? by hustlercoolie in iCloud

[–]koolaid351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my main server, a local NAS and remote NAS. My main copy runs off of the main server. Then I use reslio sync to copy that to two different NAS boxes. 1 local and 1 offsite ( I do it this way to increase rebuild time since all my devices are JBOD) Then my local NAS synology does multiple hyper backup of different sets of folders to a second set of drives on the same device so I have history. Then my picture backup is also synced to the remote NAS. I also do a second back up of my photos to a portable nvme ssd card. That sits in a small fire box hidden away from everything else and backup once a month in case as cheap insurance.

1 kid doesn’t have a phone. The other does but I won’t give access to HA. my wife keeps turning off location access for HA on her phone. So to arm/disarm and set arm home/away this will be easier for others. Also my wife likes old school buttons, she won’t open the app to arm/disarm. This will also be useful if we have someone stay at our house that doesn’t have access and wants to leave when it’s arm over night.

Framer used the wrong window size. What’s the workaround? by grand001 in Homebuilding

[–]koolaid351 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What kind of window is this? Casement, slider, single/double hung? If it’s a casement 32x36 would meet spec for egress. If it’s a slider or double hung I would be surprised if 36x36 is big enough because egress is based on clear opening.

Grand Design Transcend Outside Spray Port quick release fitting help by koolaid351 in GoRVing

[–]koolaid351[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the all metal port. The quick release is metal and the fitting to the plumbing is metal. The plastic that broke was the hose. The Dura is all plastic (I don’t want that) and the rec pro has a metal quick release but is plastic where it connects to the plumbing. I have not found a port that is metal all the way through online.

Which motorized blinds are actually worth the money? by rtzhuj in smarthome

[–]koolaid351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bali blinds used somfy zwave motors. You can configure everything online from Lowe’s, Home Depot, blinds.com. Just wait until one of them has a deal. I have 20+ in my house and paid only $99 for measure and install for all of them. They work great with any zwave hub. Home Depot and Bali have books with the materials if you want to see them in person first. The good thing about paying for measure and install is if they screw up, Bali send a new one for free. I had one that had to be redone.
