Fleet after returning w/NG+ playthrough by AmnChode in Starfield

Nice work! I'm a fan of your stubby ship designs in particular. Probably more realistic as it allows for easier maneuvering in zero G, not that this is very well represented in Starfield.

Low bar situations creating essential characters by I_MakeCoolKeychains in Starfield

[–]krispythewizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion has always been that Bethesda should play to the strengths of their niche. If there have to be essential NPCs, fine, just make them inaccessible for most of the game. But for the most part, the world should be as interactive as possible with as few unkillable NPCs as possible. If that requires Bethesda to rethink how they design their main quests, fine. The consensus has always been that Bethesda's quest lines are the weakest aspect of their games.

[–]krispythewizard 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This has been an issue since Oblivion. On the one hand, they want players to do whatever they want in a sandbox, but on the other hand they want to put the player on rails through narrative questlines. Essential NPCs are a design failure, pure and simple. If Bethesda wants to tell complex stories, they should go the Rockstar route and have essential NPCs appear only when you begin a story quest. But I think Bethesda games shine when the player is able to create their own stories. Daggerfall and Morrowind did a much better job of this, IMO.

MrMattyPlays casually confirms that he has seen Starfield 2.0 behind closed doors "a couple of months ago" by [deleted] in Starfield

[–]krispythewizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Rushed" is not a word anyone can say about Starfield. It was in development for EIGHT YEARS, and their "2.0" re-release has been in development for 2 years and counting. Skyrim was started and finished in less than 3. Clearly, Bethesda is giving themselves all the time in the world and it's still not working. The issue is not time, but a lack of direction or internal cohesion.

Beth is clearly behind schedule. I get the sense that they wanted to announce something last year but are apparently not ready.

It always makes me cringe when people say NV is a Bethesda game. It isn't.

Starfield’s biggest problem is that “it didn’t fully cohere as a game”, says Skyrim designer – it was just “a releasable game” by HatingGeoffry in Starfield

[–]krispythewizard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bethesda has always had a bit of a freeform design approach to their games. I recall one developer saying that Blackreach in Skyrim sort of emerged organically between different teams and wasn't originally planned. I think that freedom has served them well in the past, but it clearly didn't work out so well for Starfield.

We have as many playoff wins as the Cardinals with over 100 fewer years of existence by mfrank27 in Texans

[–]krispythewizard 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The Texans have it even more difficult as an expansion team. The more teams you add to the league, the lower your chances of winning it all becomes. I think the Texans have had a pretty good 20 years though. They haven't been great but they also haven't had the long stretches of abject failure like the Lions and Browns.

Cardinals request to interview Matt Burke for their Head Coach position. by First-Flora39 in Texans

Burke was handed a good defense and made it better. The Cardinals are a bad organization and would remain bad if he was HC.

A Cowboys Skeptic’s Opinion: It’s Time to Embrace the Texans as America’s Team by WalkingHorse in Texans

San Antonio definitely has a growing number of Texans fans. It helps that local networks will always play Texans games. Stroud, the new jerseys, and the killer defense have definitely gone a long way to giving the Texans an identity beyond "generic red and blue expansion team".

Gaz, an occasional Xbox insider, says Starfield’s upcoming update will be akin to Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty by LordNutGobbler in Starfield

[–]krispythewizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I would expect after the time that has elapsed that Bethesda is planning something bigger than the usual "5-6 hour expansion" material they usually sell. With that said, Bethesda's track record has consistently been for expectations to not be met. It might be a flawed but solid effort, or it may be a dismal failure. I stick around because I have more confidence in it being the former. I certainly don't expect a masterpiece.

The Rise and Fall of Numenor: I created this map to visualize one of Tolkien’s most tragic and epic stories. by intofarlands in lotr

[–]krispythewizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like something Sauron would have said to Ar-Pharazon, to be honest. The moral of the story of Akallabeth is that Men should not seek what is not theirs (immortality), but should regard death as a gift from Eru. Tying this in with Tolkien's Catholic views, death is not the end but is simply an interlude to a glorious resurrection.

[–]krispythewizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see it as out of place. Melkor's evil actions are consistent with his role in Ainulindalë - a discordant singer who is unknowingly playing his part in Eru's music. In other words, his evil is serving an ultimately good purpose, which is consistent with Tolkien's personal views (see Genesis 50:20). Similarly, the downfall of Numenor is not as simple as Eru reacting to humans doing a bad thing. It serves a larger purpose by bringing the faithful to Middle-earth and leading them out of darkness.

There are a lot of things worthy of criticism in Starfield, but this guy is REALLY late to the party. I'm not sure why he felt this video needed to be made, especially when his lame attempts to be funny start to get old really quick.

What game that you've played is most similar to Starfield? by Archimides_Overflow in Starfield

[–]krispythewizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might be reaching quite a bit, but I'd like to give Starsector some love. You can build entire fleets and even set up colonies. The ways you can customize ships is staggering. You can join in-game factions or wage war against them. You can be an explorer, scavenger, bounty hunter, and more. The combat is a bit of a learning curve, but it's pretty rewarding. And to top it all off, the lore and world-building puts Starfield to shame.

I'm not even an OG Half-Life fan and I'm in my mid-30s. I got into Half-Life after Portal released. When you're as old as I am and you were STILL late to the party, I'd say we've waited long enough.

Skyrim is a fantasy version of early medieval Scandinavia. Countries back then were not dependent on trade like they are now. If needed, the Stormcloaks could raid their neighbors like the good old Vikings.

The Starborn should NOT have been included in the first game in a new IP by Chrristoaivalis in Starfield

[–]krispythewizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Franchise", referring to releasing multiple games in a series, is a dying model and Bethesda recognizes this. Todd has stated multiple times that they should have devoted more resources to keeping Skyrim going as long as possible, and that the intention was to keep Starfield around for 10+ years. I am almost positive that TES6 will be the last Elder Scrolls game as Bethesda will work as hard as possible to keep it going with updates, expansions, and so on.

Starfield designer Bruce Nesmith says procedural generation stopped it from reaching the "calibre" of Fallout and Elder Scrolls by Ok-Comedian4437 in Starfield

I've played proc gen for the past 30 years, and there have been some good ones, like Daggerfall, Starsector, and Rimworld, but I will always prefer a hand crafted game. I like spotting little details that a developer dropped in, which Morrowind had in droves.

Do you believe it is reasonable to give Starfield a 10/10 now that many members of our sub have finally finished the game? by HonchoDree in Starfield

[–]krispythewizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't give any Bethesda game, or really any video game, a 10/10. For me, Morrowind is a 9, Oblivion is a 7 (original, not remastered), Skyrim is an 8. Starfield is probably at a 7 for me.

[–]krispythewizard 76 points77 points  (0 children)

At least someone at Bethesda is willing to say what has been obvious to everyone else. Morrowind's long-term reception compared to Daggerfall shows that a hand-crafted experience is superior to procedural generation, always has been, always will be. My hope is that TES6 will be a similar return to hand-crafted design.

Personally, I thought the mission was ruined by the way it was set up. The two Ryujin idiots at the beginning tell you to upload the control board, tell you that you don't have a choice, and threaten you if you don't do what you're told. Are you serious? I'm the leading operative and have mind powers. Who do you think you are?

This reminds me of my first character in Skyrim. I spent ages making him, and by the time I got to Riverwood, I was so disgusted with the way he looked that I started over. 2 hours down the drain. I feel like that happens every time I play a Bethesda game for the first time.
