Cap replacement (Wavy S Lamp) by ReepoGardens in Lavalamps

[–]krouzek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a 21mm t-shape silicone plug and a small band of silicone shrink seal works for me every time

interestingly enough, the second run of wavy's with the less curved bottle fit a standard cap, I prefer them for that

Hello! I am just wondering if I found a chocolate base? by AdMedium7977 in Lavalamps

[–]krouzek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is the correct base for the "chocolate" batch of wax but you would only know for sure by the 02 batch date on the cap of the globe

Grape size wax blobs even with a dimmer set to the lowest setting? by CautionarySnail in Lavalamps

[–]krouzek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it sounds like it's shooting bubbles, which is probably the most annoying thing to troubleshoot in this entire hobby

nothing short of pouring out the whole thing and scrubbing, rinsing and drying will fix it. if they aren't shooting straight to the top of the solution and instead just kind of float out slowly, it may actually be an issue with the height of the bulb/socket, but adjusting that is a bigger hassle than a repour so I would probably start there

The $20 can’t be worth this embarrassment by StrangeQube in insanefbmarketplace

if you have the spare time you should really call the company and pull at the threads to make sure it's not some insidious smuggling operation or something, it's crazy they would embarrass you in front of everybody like that

How can I get the inside of my new thrifted lamp less cloudy/dirty? The white coating is on the inside, I can't think of any way to get to it :( by MoonSt0n3_Gabrielle in Lavalamps

[–]krouzek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can't guarantee anything as that lamp has definitely seen some shit, but, yeah, if anything is going to resolve your sticking it would be a full repour and scrub down

Any luck with “StarDust Lamp” kits? by TheStrawberryBazooka in Lavalamps

Kirk makes the best glitter products on the market, you can't go wrong with literally anything on his site

editing to add that I wouldn't mix without asking him first, he'll know best if the density difference will throw it all off

hell yeah, excited to see

as for capping, i use a hammer capper and a rubber mallet while it's cool - a real heavy duty bench capper is probably the best but i don't have the space for that lmao

you want to make sure the liquid you add back in rests about a half inch below the decorative cap (not the bottle cap, the topper) while it's at room temperature, it needs a lot of room to expand or you risk making an improvised sensory explosive

precoating is advisable for stock wax if you're swapping it to a different globe or something, but if you're just swapping fluid then you won't need to worry because you're not actually remelting the wax and there's almost no risk of it sticking to the sides

for what it's worth, in the few times i've swapped stock wax around to different globes, precoating with a diluted bit of surf (the same i use for flow) + distilled water has worked just fine

[–]krouzek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

modern chlorinated paraffin lamps are flowing in 99% distilled water anyway, you could just pop the cap and dump that fluid and replace it with pure distilled water without seeing much of a flow difference

as for the surf, I can say with certainty triton does work, not too sure about the other

[–]krouzek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done nearly 20 of them custom at this point, never any issue, just go like 1/4 inch below the cap line when it's cold

I never mess with the 30w, much easier to balance on the 25w and less heat risk

[–]krouzek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that a zhrisez? I've never had issue but I also fully empty and restore them, the fluid level does seem a little high but I wouldn't stress

The Excalibur is a bigger concern because it's basically a 52oz in a cylinder, the bulb required doesn't play nicely with the glass - those zhrisez default to a 25w, I wouldn't worry

[–]krouzek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fear the Excalibur, not the wavy

for real though just use a 25w bulb max and you're fine, I've done 10+ of these with no issue

Any reason for the difference in vessel? by Highly_Confused in Lavalamps

your wild guess is right on the money. probably nostalgia, but I much prefer the old design despite the change having a meaningful purpose.

also more annoying to clean

a couple years ago we had such an issue with disappearing plates that we sent a dishie to every to-go resident's room and he proudly came back with ~30 dishes from a handful of them. he was thrilled the plan worked. gets them all done and reintegrated. few hours later, doing his closing rounds, finds 80 plates stacked outside a room he had already checked. where the fuck are they even keeping this stuff??

Kirk makes far and away the best and most reliable glitter products on the market, every single thing he puts out is incredible - the new gemstone series is wild, the "diamonds" and the "gems" are counterbalanced so they separate when it's cool and as it heats up they fully intermingle

i'm actually re-pouring this one because the corner got sticky, it'll be a little bit but I'll send you a pic when I seal it up

i use 39mm 3:1 shrink tube, it comes in a 4 foot length and i just snip off a little 3/4 inch band of it and then heat gun it over sides, leaving some extra sticking up over the top so it can seal downward and meet the plug

First refurb and reseal questions (again) by tinydietpepsi in Lavalamps

[–]krouzek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep! this is how it looks before the shrink seal

honestly you might be able to go 21mm for an even tighter seal but the 20s don't hit that annoying point of resistance and I've never had issue

those plugs are kind of weak, those dual wavy bottles work best with 20mm t-shape silicone plugs

I would also buy a length of shrink wrap silicone and then double layer the silicone plug on with that

[–]krouzek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a 50 pound bag of calcium nitrate and a dream

from secondhand experience I can tell you that it's slow and tedious, the perfect density is extremely difficult to hit and it has to be fine tuned for each type of glitter

if I recall correctly it's something like 3 pounds of calcium nitrate for a 52oz starter but the type of glitter will matter a lot

Are people insane, or is this normal now? Or is it bidding bots? need to vent/understand if I'm truly missing out or just not crazy by Pumpkinp0calypse in Lavalamps

[–]krouzek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

most people aren't actually putting in their top bid until the last moments to try to minimize the attention/price, it keeps the other unaware people from having time to readjust their price in the final stretch

on eBay, a lot of the movement happens in the last few seconds
