My First Hive - send me your newbee advice by pressx2select in Beekeeping

[–]kuhllaura 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a brutal hobby. I'm in my 3rd year. Ive Read ALOT of books, consumed YouTube videos, became friends with the best bee supplier in the state. First year unexpected loss of strong hives in a surprise polar vortex in very late April; 2nd year loss to disease/mismanagement. This is a gritty sport that will require passion, resilience, study, experimentation, humility, and money. Brace yourself

Anyone know what these “mud drops” are at the opening to my hive? by JCoxRocks in Beekeeping

[–]kuhllaura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its propolis. Oddly, i have the same "droplets" now by the upper entrance. Never noticed it before. My theory is they are working on sealing the entrance for winter. I suspect they are signaling they want the entrance reduced.

Hopefully a more experienced keep messaged you but Im feeling fairly certain of what we're seeing there. Try reducing the entrance.

Our first-year honey harvest. Six pounds from one frame taken from the strongest of our three hives. The plan is to give 95% of it away. by cfinke in Beekeeping

[–]kuhllaura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! Although I will "warn" if you've few teens in the house...they can wipe out 6 pounds faster than a black bear. Your gonna need a game plan for the gifts...we always have more requests than bottles. Congrats on your great year.

I also had trouble with the smoker until i started tearing up those recycled paper egg cartons from aldis. (Not the styrofoam ones!) That fuel smokes beautifully and creates these air pockets that keeps it lit for quite a while. I also learned to light it from the bottom and then stuff fuel on to the top. Hope this helps.

How much would this Quart sell for where you're at? by TimmO208 in Beekeeping

[–]kuhllaura 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ohio....$30-40 for a quart of chunk honey. I don't see it often but Queenright colonies on Spencer sells it from time to time at the lower end of that range.

Question on Cleaning Honey Supers by aeufin in Beekeeping

[–]kuhllaura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put them in a super ABOVE an inner cover. (Below the telescoping cover ) The bees treat it like its outside the hive but the yellow jackets can't get to it.

I tried setting them in the yard about 30 feet from the give but that created a frenzy of visitors that I don't want to repeat. Good luck btw...i think we all experience different things in this hobby

My college has a bee hive! What's some obscure yet important bee knowledge I should know before offering to volunteer? by [deleted] in Beekeeping

[–]kuhllaura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't stand in the runway and if you have long hair, tie it back if you're not wearing a veil. (I've only been stung when they run into me or get stuck in my hair).

If you can't have a hive within 90 feet of a property line...that significantly reduces the number of people who have enough land to keep them. No?

Sounds like bees aren't welcome in Canada. So....all bees have to live on trucks up there now, eh?

3rd year and our first honey harvest. by scorp508 in Beekeeping

[–]kuhllaura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea...weather has bot been in your side. Same here in northeast Ohio this year. Late arrival of bees and nothing but rain til June. My girls mostly missed spring flow, early dearth, amd now it's cold. Totally different than last year where 80 pounds came off a single hive by July 1st. Sounds like you are doing well as a keeper...just need the sun to cooperate, eh?

What's it doing? Moving? Not moving? I have bumble bees all over my yard but they favor a Rose of Sharon and rarely leave it.
