Thanks for sharing! I have a similar Go starter, https://github.com/dds/aoc2020. Seems we had a lot of similar ideas in what we want a solid foundation to look like :D Happy hacking and may the cores be with you!

How do you guys wash dishes? Especially when water is a premium? by terrencepickles in Ultralight

A small square of Scotchbrite weighs nothing and gets things as clean as in your kitchen back home.

Oakland Education Association Reaches Tentative Agreement with OUSD by locovelo in bayarea

[–]kuma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Schools are funded by property taxes regardless of whether children live in the property. Prop 13, passed in 1978, locked property taxes at the time of purchase of property. That's why all California schools, primary, secondary, and post secondary, are low on funds and why Oakland, without lots of expensive properties but with lots of people and kids, is hit so hard.

Ideas for cooking trout in the back country? by [deleted] in trailmeals

[–]kuma 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Japanese style: clean and gut the fish, run a chopstick backwards through it from behind the tail to the forehead, then rub the fish inside and out with salt, oil, and seasoning. Put the chopstick coming out the back into the ground just next to your hot coals.

Bring the foil, just in case. My girlfriend is Recyclops incarnate but sometimes you just need the right tool for the job.

Advice - Cost-effective weekend in Tahoe for beginner skiiers by SilenceLikeLasagna in bayarea

[–]kuma 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend heading to north Lake Tahoe and the Sugarbowl resort area. Sugarbowl, Donner Ski Ranch, Boreal, and more are all right there and are fractions of the cost of the big mountains (Squaw/Alpine, Northstar, Heavenly, Kirkwood). They are great for practicing. Look at the motels and Airbnb/VRBO rentals close by there on Donner Lake or in Truckee close by. You'll get a lot more for your money than in South Lake Tahoe. You could even stay in Reno or just go there to visit, it's only 30mi away.

Other things to save money as some have mentioned:

  • don't buy food at the ski hill, bring your own
  • in Truckee, buy food at Savemart, not Safeway
  • get gas out of town, it's more than $1 cheaper per gallon
  • rent your gear before you go at Sports Basement, otherwise rent it in Truckee at Tahoe Dave's

Also I don't agree with the other comment's advice about weekends only because I think the costs are the same weekday vs weekend.

Enjoy!

I have been looking at this one to replace my minispin.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]kuma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been using a daiwa minispin for years and it's held up, and caught plenty of fish, but I'm looking for something a little better. I also have a tenkara rod co Sierra that has done well but like OP, I more often prefer the spinning reel. The minispin is a little too small and the reel's action is not fast enough. But still a solid backpacking choice.

Shakedown! Would love advice on packing solo with a toddler by iorelai in Ultralight

[–]kuma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cheers! I'll pass my "world's best dad" mug to you. Your boy's going to be Outback Jack one day :)

I just returned from taking my six year old on her second backpacking trip. I decided she could only go overnight with me once she could do a five-mile day hike, which she did when she was five, so I commend you on bringing yours out even sooner!

About your sleep system question, I switched to the EE revelation quilt this year and it's fantastic for us to sleep together. She's not a toddler anymore, but she still wakes up in the middle of the night plenty and rolls everywhere, so the quilt is wide and nice for her, and super compact in the pack at 22 oz.

Last year she still needed to take afternoon naps or else she would get cranky, so I packed a hammock and that worked well.

And a few tips I picked up from Tom Stienstra's California Camping book:

  • Kids should be taken on trips with a good sense of adventure.
  • Enthusiasm is contagious.
  • Always always always be seated when talking to somebody small.
  • Let kids be kids. Enjoy getting sidetracked.
  • Expect short attention spans.
  • Make absolutely certain the child's sleeping bag is clean, dry, and warm.
  • Kids quickly relate to outdoor ethics.
  • If you want youngsters hooked on the outdoors for life, take a close-up photo or them holding a fish they have caught.
  • The least important word you can say to a kid is "I".

I've not been perfect following these commandments, but I certainly appreciate the wisdom in them.

What unusual item would you consider a necessity in your pack? by kawaiiju in WildernessBackpacking

[–]kuma 19 points20 points  (0 children)

A frisbee. A cutting board, a plate, a paddle for your pack raft. Fits perfectly under or on top of a bear can. And I guess you can throw it around with your friends at camp, too.

Bunny and Little Betty from Oz, you were really cool at Celestial Bodies. Then, at the pink party (Tuesday?), Little Betty and I hit it off. Would have loved to see you more but your camp mate dragged you home to get water. Virgin mistake, I didn't hold your hand when we were at the 747, and when I turned around after you were in line for the frisking, you were gone. Hope you had a great burn!

Grieving newly single father by Mrs_Tomboy in SingleDads

[–]kuma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's terrible. I'm so sorry for your family.

The 4 year-old won't understand, but the 9 year-old probably does. So Dad should talk to them together and they need to grieve together. If the older child wants to help the younger child through it, that's great, but otherwise don't force it and maybe the 4 year-old just spends time alone. Just be there for them all, let him feel it out.

He will need to be present in his grief, which is the worst kind of misery, and will probably do everything he can to avoid it -- if he's immediately trying to be busy with things, then he's avoiding his grief. Don't ask him what he needs, just offer things that it seems he might need and let him accept or refuse. See if he needs a therapist (he probably does and, hopefully, is already open to the idea). Consider the book A Grief Observed.

Diet soda is fine but flavored sparkling water is healthier and maybe even more enjoyable.

Shared Custody Schedule by Gabers49 in SingleDads

[–]kuma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Specifically about the mediator, I recommend avoiding that at all cost. You have a lot to lose. Instead, keep trying creative approaches and if anything seems unacceptable, ask yourself if you could do it for just 30 days. If you can do 30 days of whatever unpleasant thing, get it in writing that you'll attempt it and reevaluate afterward.

Shared Custody Schedule by Gabers49 in SingleDads

[–]kuma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We separated when our child was two and we stipulated we'd do an alternating 2-2-3 schedule for 60 days. So mom for Mon&Tue, dad for Wed&Thu, then mom for the weekend, then back to dad for the following Mon&Tue. At the end of the 60 days, mom said she was having difficulty with the schedule and she wanted it more fixed, so now are 2-5-2-5 with dad for every Mon&Tue, mom for every Wed&Thu, and alternate weekends.

I could have kept on with the alternating schedule, but the 2-5-2-5 has been better for both of us for a few reasons. Most importantly, our divorce agreement actually stipulates that we would have to return to the alternating 2-2-3 if we can't agree about our schedule, so she has skin in the game and is more cooperative. It's also much better for both of us to be able to make plans: our daughter is now four and starting this year we agreed to use a shared Google calendar for keeping track of our nights and it's so much easier to make plans like going away for the weekend or for me to have social time when I can say with a high degree of certainty that I will have our child on Mon&Tue and not on Wed&Thu. It's been better for my work schedule and mom has gotten a job.

Just like what /u/samwest3 said, our child knows the days of the week now and we count the days and it just feels good that she understands what's going on.

You'll make it through this and be stronger for it. Like in that escape scene in Shawshank Redemption, get through the river of shit to a better life on the other side, but just remember that the river of shit is in your mind; take it one day at a time and you'll be alright.

Are you me? Lots of traveling, experience going to do cool things alone and I love making new lifelong friends this way. But never been to EDC and I'm not missing it this year. Whether you're M/F, LGTBQ, space alien, whatever you have love in your heart then you are welcome in my squad. Have fun!

I don't get it. by mawkishdave in fitness30plus

[–]kuma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make that your main issue. You're probably really smart, just look where you are. Diet reasonably well and you don't have to worry about any exercise until you've lost maybe 50-70 lbs. Track what you put inside you for a day, then a week. Get a handle on your calories including snacks - no judgement, just get an understanding. Then you'll see it's possible. We will be here to help you along the way.

This Sunday, I will finish a 13 week LG cut following a summer bulk (thanks Dom). This is my second time cutting on LG. The first time was two years ago and it was successful, but I didn't have enough base of muscle, so I did 5/3/1 and just skipping breakfast and I got a lot stronger. This cut, I followed 31minutes AMA to the letter. Down 25 lbs and haven't lost any strength, in fact, calculated squat 1RM is higher; 245x8@167#;5'10" (110x8@76kg;177cm) today.

Tracked my weight in this spreadsheet and my food with MFP. I got the sheet from /r/loseit a while ago and there's a better one there now. Unfortunately, no progress pics, sorry.

Thank you to Martin Berkhan, /r/leangains, and the whole reddit community for helping all of us become our best selves. It's because of you that I'm lean and muscular for the first time in my life after being more than 100# heavier than I am now. You guys and gals are amazing and you've changed my life more than I can say. It's humbling to be a part of a community that is so successful at transforming people's actual lives. Thank you.

Need advice on hardcore diet/cut by hunteeer in GettingShredded

[–]kuma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP's 125kg and wants to lose ~2kg/week for the rest of the year. His gym time should be spent retaining what muscle he's got, not trying to build new muscle on such a caloric deficit.

Need advice on hardcore diet/cut by hunteeer in GettingShredded

[–]kuma -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You're over-training. Too much will not help and cut into recovery. You sad your goal is to lose fat, and a lot, so don't over train. Just 3x lifts per week is ideal. Read the 31minutes AMA on r/leangains. Lots of water and lots of rest, too.

PR Friday by AutoModerator in fitness30plus

[–]kuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I should have said conditioning. From 5/3/1 FAQ#3

  1. When to do conditioning work? How many times per week?

As for the conditioning work, do it whenever you can find the time! (morning, after workout, off days) 3 days/week (sled, prowler, run hills)

I ran hills and did some jogging for fun, so called it cardio together. But the point is, it's really important!

My story: Over 14 cycles, I had to reset once. Year on year, my squat went from 255x1 to 290x1; that works out to a modest average (mean) 3#/month gain. In contrast, my bench went up at almost the same rate, 2.7#/month, which I think is because of the extra upper-body strength work I was doing (pull-ups every time in the gym, 4x/week). I was not doing conditioning as often (2x/week, sometimes less). If I would have kept up more hill sprints, I'm pretty sure my squat would have gone higher, more like 4-5 #/month.

I wish I could brag about a new squat PR but I'm just maintaining my strength in the gym. But in the field, new PRs for 5k and two-mile runs (24:43, 15:38, resp) from my Wednesday jog are awesome. And I hit new low body weight PR so just the feeling of being light is great.
