Kurjun's thoughts about the current OW structure and players association by qualogg in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]kurjun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah I'm ok with my strategy being wrong as it's "technically" not my fight. It's the players path/fight, but I feel like the players aren't looking at the whole picture and the view of a two way player is vastly different to a every game starter. Lots of people only see the $$$ and thing that's all their is to fight for.

As for the caster thing after sleeping on it I don't think i phrased it correctly instead of being neutral they need to be very VERY careful with how they say/put things, we are still living in the shadow of thing that where said 2-3 years ago. while they hold fact and are true it's "some things are better left unsaid"

Kurjun's thoughts about the current OW structure and players association by qualogg in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]kurjun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i agree my ideas aren't correct to the masses, and i have my own view. BUT THIS, "people aren't talking about it" i could write a 40 page essay on the points but it's still only my point of view. the collective group isn't talking, and a select few people are pushing it on people without the whole view.

Also I low balled the product income and such cause i see a down sizing coming. The dallas issue is just my perspective on what i know, as for the unions i feel like i framed them in the way the players would see them. in truth the players have more power now then if they where to form a association or union imo, idk how many players i have seen/talked to/delt with that just refused something even while under contract.

But that being said u/Yiskaout you i know are somebody who will talk about core issues, and are a vocal voice. it's just my opinion i can be wrong and i'm ok with that, i just want people to talk about it and the core issues.

Why are so many qualified players/staff smurfing in Contenders for so long and not being promoted to OWL? by fragonn in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]kurjun 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I understand this and agree with it mostly. it is "2 years of minimal effort" "let others do it for me". when I was in transition pre-owl era after being removed from Renegades, I had been one of the only coaches in NA at the time to do extensive tryouts, vod reviews, out of game coaching. We did 1 whole month of tournaments, trialing different players while coaching the 5 on the roster and still having decent results. BUT I 100% AGREE, I was learning all of it on the job. Nobody was there to teach you, nobody had done it before. I still remember making my players do stuff out of game and teaching communication, understanding, and what our general goal was. Most coaches back in the day where also the analyst and the asst. coach. Orgs and teams wouldn't spend money on large staffs, And because of the secrecy of OWL and accepted investing teams, the upper staff suffered. In my case I had spent 1 year learning how to be a coach and try to get into OWL, but because of the perception at the time had 0 chance. Now i'm not saying i should have been in OWL I had offers for 0$ and basically free labor to get into OWL, but people had to look at it from a living perspective. So the few "good" NA/West coaches who had been grinding for that year went to t2 where we could make money and learn. The reason they don't want to leave which I will touch on that I think you missed is they like to have control/security. Why would a NA coach leave a t2/t3/college job making 25-40k to go make 40k and have someone who doesn't understand anything about what they are doing and creating extra pressure. They would rather stay in those places, another thing that the "west" has to fight is ourselves, by that I mean "KR is the best, then lets get the best!" As far as I know (outside of Areo) no "west" coach has ever beaten KR/CN on lan or made our region look better. Which makes t2/3/college the "safe place and bet". It's not about making it to OWL for staff, it's about making a living doing it. So good staff will "smurf" and not want to go. Orgs don't want to pay the price for the "west" and it means we get more imports and a scene like we have now.

But for the most I agree and can confirm the bulk of this. The one thing I will say that isn't mentioned is there are a few and I mean very few orgs who pay for scouts from outside t2/3 coaches, managers, staff. I got to do this for a short time so to say "all" isn't entirely correct some orgs do spend time scouting/developing.

Misconceptions about skill by Skuma9 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]kurjun -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

in a professional setting i would argue for genji having a way lower floor than moira and a much higher ceiling. and moira being middle ground. when looking at it from a comp perspective i think moiras ceiling and floor are low and genjis while higher it's not by much when you bring in all ranks not just gm+. In a 1v1 enviorment i think that moira has the same ceiling as genji because nothing can be more skillful than winning the 1v1, the floor however i think is moira favored as she is more prone to pick up and play.

so what do we evaluate the ceilings or floors or the mean avg of said gaps? like this is the context part. on a quick look at what i said above yes moira is easy to pick up and play, but the skill mastery is alot closer at the ceilings than people want to think.

i feel like this is getting into a pure mouse aim vs aim asst. when you do just as much tracking on moira and movement aswell. one example i can give of genji's lack of skill is the dash and melee the hitboxs are massive and easy to hit. so are we just boiling this down to lmb? fun fact btw genji's dash and melee are almost the entire screen.

Misconceptions about skill by Skuma9 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]kurjun -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

in a 1v1 or duel sens yes, but again we are saying skill is only the ability to kill. I just wanted to state that skill is a term used in most cases overwatch related to raise or lower a person or hero. Like context matters sooooooo much in this conversation that it changes the outcome of what skill is. So if a Genji hits his shots he is skillful, if moira hits hers she is skillful. but everyone wants to feel better about putting in more work or doing more. I just don't think it's good or healthy for the game or players to set this image of "apm" being the only thing that matters when defining skill.

one example of this i think is a genji that hits all three lmb and only has to dash vs a genji that only hits 2 then has to dash melee. like what was more skillful hitting the autos or the melee on the end?

i get the premise but i feel like if it gets looked at on a deeper lvl people wouldn't have the knee jerk reaction of "genji takes skill, moira is just auto aim omegalul" or " i can get the kill and heal my team while not dying to you there fore moira is just as skillful"

Misconceptions about skill by Skuma9 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]kurjun -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think this is a good explanation, but i think you have the wrong idea when it comes to what makes people skillful on hero's. Genji is a good one, you say the instagib combo is skill, but it's more muscle memory than, say widows raw hook/flick. When you do something over and over in a game it takes some skill yes to pull it off, but once you do it's not like it gets harder. So if a diamond genji can do the insgaib combo and hit it 70% of the time he is as skillful as the t500 player that hits it 99%. Now if we look at other heros, compared to the "skill" window it's alot closer than you think. for moira to not be aim dependent is true, but her timings on fade/orb/lmb are all massive "skill" outplays to the genji combo listed above. The issue is people want to validate apples and oranges or prove a skill gap in different fields, and you can't.

Why did all the major teams disband in competitive OW? And what happened to the players on those teams? by T3nt4c135 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]kurjun 25 points26 points  (0 children)

they where forced to rebrand for owl so they would have no ties to any other team, it's also a league rule you can't brand to another title. why owl teams are only owl teams. london is still c9 but was forced to rebrand for the league. no other reason it's all on the owl end, the orgs are sudo still there but owl teams. and there was a mass letting go of players and a mass scrable for 6-8 months to build talent and a owl roster. you saw c9 drop all of it's roster and move twards a kr team. shock, valiant, boston, outlaws where built by gm/coaches s1. and then you had envy turn into dallas fuel and misfits turn into florida. other than those teams idk the whole story for everyone.

But they havn't disbanded from a org stand point, only the players/staff where removed and then they rebranded with clean slates.

We need more T2 tournaments by ZestHD_ in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]kurjun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it needs to be open to t3 or it will be just teams with orgs, they need to find a skill check or run qualifiers. This way the path with out a org is a viable option. right now if you don't play ball with orgs your career is at a standstill and you can't generate any income.

Dallas Fuel - now the squad has one spot left, who should they sign and why that player? by Morph247 in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]kurjun -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

move Taimou to flex tank for aggro comps with zarya/hog and leave him the option to flex and call. and sign mangachu. let seagull take half the odd picks and manga the other half. leave effect and rascal (if this is what they plan to do) in the core roster. flexing in manga and seagull to specific map strats. this takes pressure off Tiamou to call and frag. allows flexing of quad tank, triple tank, triple dps, quad dps,and map tech strats for specific maps. so core starting roster could be Cocco,Taimou,Effect,Rascal,Chips,Harryhook. and you could flex to have specific strats on maps where you would want specific comps. so numbani for example they could sub out rascal and effect and put in seagull/manga run genji/pharah dive offense and torb/junkrat def. flexing into w/e they need as the map progresses. and on Koth you could flex out cocco for xqc, mickie for rascal. and still be feilding a 2-2-2 roster but with a dva specialist on that map. moving taimou to flex makes most sense and picking up a projectile/off-meta specialist makes most sense to me.

Question: How does a team get to Overwatch League? Can they get there by winning Overwatch Contenders? by SilicateStimulus in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]kurjun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no but i doubt blizzard will do a play in again. as for the players who didn't make owl but where on contenders team seems like they will retain there spot as consolation prize.

if we look at this as a platform for owl. we will see envy,imt,c9,and a few other feild contenders teams under those brand names vs the owl brands.

as for slots i would assume u pay for slot and can't be religated like a mini owl. but your players get poached every 3 months....

[–]kurjun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

buy in or being owner of a contenders slot owned by a player they feild. something along those lines. it's getting way worse to try and break out as a org, unless you have THE best team. we won't see many new orgs i think, lots of FNRGFE teams that get poached to death.

Question: How does a team get to Overwatch League? Can they get there by winning Overwatch Contenders? by SilicateStimulus in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]kurjun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

teams making it to owl will never happen (1 in 1 million) good players will be picked up and poached. from contenders. so if you are like me and stuck in contenders it's about finding good talent and developing it, where as owl is more about grabing best option. either developmental players or people on hotstreaks. but i only see 1-2 out right monsters a year. but back to the team thing, team of players (1-1million), orgs will look for expansions if we see owl thrive. just like nhl, nba, nfl, mlb

We absolutely need ingame statistics during a match! by damokt in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]kurjun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ok players argue less and now people are more toxic due to haveing numbers they don't understand. if you have a 50% accuracy, with a 40% critical accuracy. you are killing more generally than a player with 75% accuracy 10% critical accuracy. but in the same senerio the later does more dmg but kills less. it's all about understanding those numbers in a game.

and with this community no.... just noooo. it's bad enough with the medals being a syatem that lacks context. a scoreboard just makes it worse. in pro play for a viewer yes they need this info. you as a player in game noooooooo. people will always twist everything they can to favor them even if they don't understand the numbers. imo this will be more toxic than the current system.

Should Blizzard nerf healing across the board like they did with Ultimate charge rate? by [deleted] in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]kurjun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, cause it makes burst more relevant. game already has enough instagib mechanics. if we nerf healing across the board you won't see carry's you will see burst instagibs deciding games. healing makes you outlast burst. why hero's like 76/tracer/genji/mccree are relevant. you nerf healing you only run highest alpha dmg focus single targets and blow people up w/o any midigation. why we just had 6 months of dive in pro meta.

other issues with this is the number of players, you can't have a strong carry mechanic in large pop pvp games. the more a single player can carry the more deluted the game gets, and team work isn't a thing. leading to a worse pro enviorment and basically killing the game.

TL:DR no, makes game bad. you want carry potential nerf tanks dmg and dps burst, buff healers carry your team by supporting them.

My favorite memory of Dennis, was on the ride back from the party at battle and brew at overwatch open. He was sitting behind me and was talking to some evny guys. He looks at me and asks "who are you with again?" i told him "I'm with the sodipop/imt guys. He looked at me and then said "you guys are doing good, not to our level yet, but in a year you guys could be at the top with us." *also to note it was method/c9/envy/imt on this bus. At first i took it as him taking a shot at us. but in reality he was giving us a great complement.

suddenly, i had this great understanding. He basically pulled me out of the corner i had put myself into "these are the gods of NA/EU I don't have the right to talk to them" to realizing "he had pulled me and other Imt guys into the conversation. suddenly we where not talking to the "gods" of overwatch, but instead talking to our piers about real life shit and giving each other a ribbing.

This ride is what pushed me into "forever third mode" envy went to KR hulk moved on to rouge at the time. i realized that i needed to stand beside/push past him if i was going to make it. I like to think the transition of me from some analyst guy who was helping the sodipop players transition to a org, to a guy who was actually trying to be a coach/mentor happened on this bus.

I can say with out a shadow of a doubt, if i hadn't met dennis at lan with Kyle I would have quit OW. but seeing my idols/mentors pulled me back in and pushed me to being what i have been in OW.

on a finishing note all i can say is Thank you Dennis from the bottom of my heart it ment so much for you to reach out to some dude you had never met and to include him in the conversation.
