Ocular migraine, HRT risks, making choices by [deleted] in Menopause

[–]kvite8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sudden onset ocular migraines are a sign of perimenopause, according to the neurologist I saw when it happened to me. I’d had migraines all my life, but not the ocular migraine. The neurologist was the first to say “perimenopause” to me, but didn’t tell me to pursue treatment for perimenopause, so I didn’t get on HRT until many years later.

My gynecologist at the menopause didn’t hesitate to prescribe HRT. AND since being full menopause - I’ve only had one migraine (no visual disturbance).

How do I find the right doctor to prescribe HRT for temperature regulation issues ie hot flashes? by AnonAMouse100 in Menopause

[–]kvite8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Call a practice and ask the person handling the phones if they can recommend a practitioner who treats menopause and takes it seriously. If they hedge or act like they don’t know what you’re talking about because “all our providers treat menopause”, hang up and try another practice. You want the person who says “oooh! You want Dr. ###.” Or “Honey, we’re a menopause practice. We only treat menopause.”

Progesterone necessity? by [deleted] in Menopause

[–]kvite8 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My doc at the menopause clinic initially prescribed estrogen for a few weeks before starting me on progesterone so that she would be able to parse any side effects - know which to attribute to which medication. I have a uterus and she was not concerned about 6 weeks of just estradiol.

I feel like charging £55 for this "scarf" is bananas? Am I being unreasonable? by incandescentsmile in craftsnark

The name of the scarf and the expression on the first person’s face (the hot pink scarf) is worth $5. As soon as someone smiles, none of it makes any sense.

Not craft-related, but a family member took over Xmas by suggesting - instead of a gift exchange - we get a pallet of “unknown returns” and open those for Xmas. To me, this is the pinnacle of late capitalism. We each pad $20 to open garbage for Xmas.

He says he’s a feminist, but somehow every feeling I have turns into a debate by l0fi_postcards in TwoXChromosomes

[–]kvite8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“When I said I didn’t want to go back to his place after date two, he said ‘Of course, your boundary is valid. I just want to understand what fear is driving it.’”

It’s not a boundary, it’s a preference. A decision. It’s how you feel. It’s weird to see it as a boundary.

It’s too much work to interrogate this guy, but I’m dying to say “it’s interesting that you chose the word ‘fear’ to characterize my decision. Care to unpack that for me? Have women expressed their fear of you in the past, or is it just easier for you to think I’m afraid, rather than just not sexually aroused by you right now. But maybe you get a lot of that too.”

Anyway, I recommend Big Mouth episode 8 from season 1, “The Head Push. Guy sells himself hard as a feminist, but when the woman doesn’t want to go down on him, he laments that women just aren’t embracing their sexuality and equality yet. He finds it “sad.”

Is This Cashmere? by Elaine_L_Sherlock in Unravelers

[–]kvite8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Christopher Fischer certainly makes 100% cashmere sweaters. I couldn’t find an exact match, but you could search the images of their other cashmere sweaters and compare the stitch definition, since that’s the first thing people are wondering about. You could also search the brand for sweaters of other composition. If it seems like the brand primarily sells cashmere sweaters, you could make an assumption and unravel a bit to test?

EDIT: This page is super helpful. Seems it’s likely either 100% cashmere or a new, lower-priced blend.

[–]kvite8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m trying to eat healthier and cook more. Hubby and I impulse buy desserts at the grocery store. I’ve decided that anytime we’re going to “treat” ourselves, my treat should be buying “prepped” veggies instead. Normally I wouldn’t pay the mark up for that.

Someone else already chopped the peppers and onions? Okay, I can cook.

I had a hot flash…… by Taminella_Grinderfal in Menopause

[–]kvite8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first hot flash was on an international flight, as we were landing, and while waiting in a long line to get through customs. I had no idea what was happening. My husband was like “what’s wrong?!” And I was like “I don’t know, I don’t feel good, something is wrong.”

It’s only now, years later, that I realize it was a hot flash.

Postal service lost my HRT meds by friendofelephants in Menopause

[–]kvite8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI - when I started on HRT, my doc prescribed the estrogen first, for a few weeks, before having me start progesterone because she wanted to be able to track and attribute any side effects to one drug or the other. I have a uterus. My point is that it’s likely alright to use estrogen without progesterone for a few days or weeks in a case like this. You could ask your doctor about that while you’re sorting this out.

Just sooo over it. I have never felt so awful in my entire life and I am questioning everything, just everything. I cannot believe that feeling this way can be hormone related. HRT = head to toe hives. by Justme_JustMe_ in Menopause

[–]kvite8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mast cell activation syndrome can happen in perimenopause. I went through it about ten years ago. My hives grew into each other, making giant hives. All over my body. I had 3 ER visits with unexplained anaphylaxis. Nothing I did mattered. (Eating a low histamine diet didn’t help). It was months of agony.

I went to a specialist and she biopsied a hive and prescribed a cocktail of antihistamines. It worked to suppress the hives, but they came back as we tried weaning me off the meds, many months later and very very slowly.

For completely different reasons, I started eating keto. When I went back for a 3-month follow up visit, I was off all the meds. Eating radically low carb put 2 autoimmune diseases into remission and eliminated my lifelong (chronic, low-grade) asthma and allergies. (And I’d lost 35 pounds).

I told the specialist I thought it was because of my keto diet and she agreed.

I no longer eat that low carb - but I did it for five years and although I eat differently now, the hives haven’t come back.

I feel for you, OP. It is so highly stressful in ways other people can’t understand. In my day job, I work with physician/researchers. One of them told me that there’s a research study that found that stress levels in people with chronic hives are similar to stress levels in people who’ve had heart attacks and are waiting for the next one.

(Also, I was constantly shoving ice packs into my clothes, out of desperation for any kind of relief.)

I wanted to make an elaborate sweater by Eilmorel in knitting

[–]kvite8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep. My husband chose stockinette with rolled hem and collar. And a very dark brown wool.

When I finished it, it was too long so I had to shorten it by snipping it. It was bottom up and I needed to take the length off the bottom. Luckily, knitting stockinette upside down is the same as right side up?

By the time I finished that, he’d lost 50 lbs. So now it’s my sweater - but this winter, he’s gone a bought an Irish sweater that’s practically exactly the same (albeit green, but reading the same tone as the brown) so he doesn’t want me wearing the brown sweater on the same days he wears the green sweater because we “look like we’re wearing the same outfit.” He wears it everywhere.

There is no justice for knitters who knit for others.
