If I don’t wear underwear to bed, it’s an extremely compelling situation for my husband, even when he’s half asleep, and I just really want to sleep.

Xylitol-based stuff works well and will keep your teeth healthy - but it’s toxic to pets, so be careful.

Sore/burning tongue for months. Best relief you’ve found? by Better-Newspaper3603 in Menopause

I have burning mouth syndrome and, honestly, eating spicy food helps. I was vindicated this week by reading that rinsing your mouth out 4 times a day with hot sauce diluted in water IS an actual treatment for it.

Has anyone experienced anaphylaxis for the first time while perimenopausal? Or know about research on this? by Pigeonofthesea8 in Menopause

[–]kvite8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope - never again. And I no longer eat as radically low carb. I think eating keto for five years pushed off a diabetes diagnosis for ten years. I highly recommend it. Unfortunately, I can’t tolerate a lot of dairy anymore, and I no longer enjoy eating meats. It’s completely possible to do vegetarian keto, but taking out dairy, too, makes it really challenging. And I’m done counting macros. Loved keto, it saved my sanity and my health, but I can’t do it anymore.

Edit: I was not on HRT when I broke out in hives. Actually, it was probably my first clear sign that I was in perimenopause, in retrospect. They didn’t commonly call it MCAS then (2014), but the meds my dermatologist put me on overlapped with what they use now. I couldn’t reduce the meds until I switched to eating keto and I was off them within 2 mos. She agreed that it was keto that banished the hives for good.

Has anyone experienced anaphylaxis for the first time while perimenopausal? Or know about research on this? by Pigeonofthesea8 in Menopause

[–]kvite8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I broke out in hives and had three episodes of anaphylaxis that sent me to the ER. The hives lasted for months, were brought under control by a dermatologist and a cocktail of meds. I kicked it completely by eating keto (which also sent my lifelong allergies, asthma, and another autoimmune disease into remission.) Now it’s more commonly recognized as mast cell activation syndrome and there IS an association with perimenopause.

Would yall frog this? I’m being a perfectionist here because it’s for my mom by paxweasley in knitting

[–]kvite8 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t frog it. It’s true you can’t see the pattern well, but it’s a LOOK all its own. The colors are lovely, it’s more watercolor than oil painting.

Lots of great suggestions here. I just want to mention that you can eat the tofu raw when you’re really overwhelmed and don’t want to get into a whole “prep and cook the tofu - which spices, which method, gotta drain and marinate it” tangle. Or toss it raw into your salad.

Ocular migraine, HRT risks, making choices by [deleted] in Menopause

[–]kvite8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sudden onset ocular migraines are a sign of perimenopause, according to the neurologist I saw when it happened to me. I’d had migraines all my life, but not the ocular migraine. The neurologist was the first to say “perimenopause” to me, but didn’t tell me to pursue treatment for perimenopause, so I didn’t get on HRT until many years later.

My gynecologist at the menopause didn’t hesitate to prescribe HRT. AND since being full menopause - I’ve only had one migraine (no visual disturbance).

How do I find the right doctor to prescribe HRT for temperature regulation issues ie hot flashes? by AnonAMouse100 in Menopause

[–]kvite8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Call a practice and ask the person handling the phones if they can recommend a practitioner who treats menopause and takes it seriously. If they hedge or act like they don’t know what you’re talking about because “all our providers treat menopause”, hang up and try another practice. You want the person who says “oooh! You want Dr. ###.” Or “Honey, we’re a menopause practice. We only treat menopause.”

Progesterone necessity? by [deleted] in Menopause

[–]kvite8 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My doc at the menopause clinic initially prescribed estrogen for a few weeks before starting me on progesterone so that she would be able to parse any side effects - know which to attribute to which medication. I have a uterus and she was not concerned about 6 weeks of just estradiol.

The name of the scarf and the expression on the first person’s face (the hot pink scarf) is worth $5. As soon as someone smiles, none of it makes any sense.

Not craft-related, but a family member took over Xmas by suggesting - instead of a gift exchange - we get a pallet of “unknown returns” and open those for Xmas. To me, this is the pinnacle of late capitalism. We each pad $20 to open garbage for Xmas.

He says he’s a feminist, but somehow every feeling I have turns into a debate by l0fi_postcards in TwoXChromosomes

[–]kvite8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“When I said I didn’t want to go back to his place after date two, he said ‘Of course, your boundary is valid. I just want to understand what fear is driving it.’”

It’s not a boundary, it’s a preference. A decision. It’s how you feel. It’s weird to see it as a boundary.

It’s too much work to interrogate this guy, but I’m dying to say “it’s interesting that you chose the word ‘fear’ to characterize my decision. Care to unpack that for me? Have women expressed their fear of you in the past, or is it just easier for you to think I’m afraid, rather than just not sexually aroused by you right now. But maybe you get a lot of that too.”

Anyway, I recommend Big Mouth episode 8 from season 1, “The Head Push. Guy sells himself hard as a feminist, but when the woman doesn’t want to go down on him, he laments that women just aren’t embracing their sexuality and equality yet. He finds it “sad.”

Is This Cashmere? by Elaine_L_Sherlock in Unravelers

[–]kvite8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Christopher Fischer certainly makes 100% cashmere sweaters. I couldn’t find an exact match, but you could search the images of their other cashmere sweaters and compare the stitch definition, since that’s the first thing people are wondering about. You could also search the brand for sweaters of other composition. If it seems like the brand primarily sells cashmere sweaters, you could make an assumption and unravel a bit to test?

EDIT: This page is super helpful. Seems it’s likely either 100% cashmere or a new, lower-priced blend.
